Why do some people become psychopaths?

Ғылым және технология

Psychopathy has long captured the public imagination. Newspaper column inches and Hollywood films alike mirror our curiosity and capture our natural fear of characters who seem to lack basic humanity. Why do some people develop psychopathy and can it be prevented?
Rosalind Franklin Lecture 2017 presented by Professor Essi Viding.

Its environmental... I grew up in a hellish household. My mother declared herself a nihilist when I was 14. She was also extremely cheap even though she had a tremendous amount of cash tucked away. I learned at a very young age (7) that good looking children from wealthy families tended to receive a lot of warm attention and were taken seriously. The children from poor families who also didnt excel academically or in sports were treated like crap. If you werent cute, it was worse. Now, if you're a child from the latter category... years and years of being treated like a dumb, three-legged dog it changes you. You become extremely rageful and very callous when you're an adult.

I disagree somewhat. Many people are mistreated in appalling ways in a prolonged way, many of them are empathetic to a fault. Not wanting others to suffer as they have. I understand your angst, but it’s not the thing. Take good care of you..... your worth is not evaluated by how others treat or talk to you. You have healing to do..... most of us do.

@@dottyp137 I personally wouldn't be so prone to violent rages, and I would have empathy and affection and love abilities if I didn't have reactive attachment disorder, RAD can lead to adult psychopathy. RAD is pretty much 100% nurture in itself. I have RAD diagnosed and I grew up to be the 34 year old I am now, still I don't know empathy, love, affection, and all the emotions/feelings one can have as a result of having those, which include remorse and shame, both of which I don't have. However I'm fortunate in that I'm intelligent enough to realise eventually that I needed to stop, it is extraordinarily difficult to use logic and science alone with nothing else to have given myself a reason to stop being a problem. I haven't got a criminal record and I'm not diagnosed with a personality disorder, and I have a psychiatrist, but I can see how psychopaths could develop not as much from genetics but a lot from childhood abuse. I had no attachment formation as a child due to the severe abuse and neglect. I never learnt what human connection is. Imagine trying to be a kind, caring, wonderful person with all that lack of experience and basic human learning.

I hate when "they" blame the child. A child who is neglected and abused from infancy and abused or brutalized all their life is going to be less sensitive to facial expressions and pain. I once witnessed a woman viciously beating and screaming at an 18 month old baby. She wanted the baby to stop crying. I'm sure this child would fail a sensitivity test.

Have also worked in both a Facility for the Mentally Disordered and a local County Jail, a place where these types often first land themselves prior to any court-ordered Psychiatric exam. I’m also still registered as a Republican, but voted for Biden. Didn’t vote at all in 2016, as I was moving across country. Dropping my affiliation with the GOP soon, given its self-inflicted implosion. There have been numerous Mental Health Experts here in the U.S. who felt a duty to warn was more important than losing their membership in the APA for violating the Goldwater Rule. Good on them. Their collective conscience is wide awake and alert, and I’m sure they sleep well at night for putting our safety before their professional status. The only people who still support Trump are White Supremacists or those who are under-educated or terribly under-informed. Which category do you fall into?

@@bliss4383 You do not understand Cluster B disorders, very clearly. You certainly have o knowledge of what DRIVES their behavior, or how narcissist different from psychopaths. I don't care how may hours you think you've studied this, it wasn't sufficient based on your statements here. It certainly has nothing to do with you being a paralegal. Admiration is what Trump needs. He wants wealth so others will admire him. He needs to be right. His ego is UBER fragile. He needs his name plastered all over everything is massive letters. If you had any true understanding of the cluster b disorders...and any true understanding of how to administer the PCL-R correctly, you would not be making these inaccurate statements. There are very distinct...and different...drivers of behavior for each disorder that distinguishes one from the other. There is also differential diagnosis, which seem to lack knowledge about as well. Trump is as fragile as fragile can be. Psychopaths are ice cold and wholly and entirely INDIFFERENT to being admired. They have almost no anxiety. They are entirely fearless. They cannot process oxytocin, so are incapable of bonding with anyone or anything. If you are so certain about your opinions, why is it that you don't already know this? Why don't you understand differential diagnosis? Trump doesn't even meet the criteria for Antisocial Personality Disorder, much less that of Factor 2 psychopathy, much less Factor 1 Psychopathy. smh Trump is anxious, fearful, in desperate need of approval and having his ego constantly stroked. Maybe stick to being a paralegal.

It's often caused by experiences that are adverse alot of people are born with brain problems and don't become psychopaths some people could lose empathy and no longer have empathy for people and often they learn those violent acts by there parents or by a bully at school it's common for people to no longer have empathy when they been mistreated by people so much and common for them to act out violence for revenge by saying that there born that way your making it sound like it's ok for people to get abused got to stop that psychopaths and sociopaths are often made and if you truly believe there born than never have kids because then your risking creating more psychopaths some of them are made

And what do you base that on? It's pretty clearly shown that it's both a genetic factor and environmental. If the parents are themselves Anti-Social it's more likely that the child will be too not only because of the genetics but also because of how the parents treat and raise the child. There are also other possible factors like ADHD for instance. There isn't one clear sign that a child will grow to have psychopathic traits it's a mix of everything. There has been plenty of research that has shown children who display similar worrying behaviour and who have early intervention will grow to dissist in that behaviour - maybe by a little and maybe by a lot. There have also been studies with adopted children so it's not as neat as simple as 'It's who they are'.
