Why Do Some Hispanic Americans Have the Jewish Breast Cancer Gene?

Genetic testing for BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations has not only helped science make great strides in both cancer prevention and diagnosis, but has also given insight into the genetic and historical connection between different Jewish communities. Research has shown that Jews have a significantly higher risk of being carriers of BRCA mutations. These genes help prevent tumors from forming, but if these genes are mutated, they are no longer able to suppress tumor cells, significantly increasing the risk of breast cancer and pancreatic cancer.
Though widely considered to be more prevalent amongst Ashkenazi Jews, some studies suggest that Sephardi and Mizrahi Jews may be at higher risk as well. These findings have created a priority for Jewish communities worldwide to screen for BRCA mutations. This genetic link between Jews also lends itself to the debate on Jewish identity throughout history. Whether Judaism is a religion, culture or ethnicity, shared genes provide further insight on Jews as a part of a historical people.

I found out my father was a Jew many, many years after his death. I never knew and it didn’t bother me either way. I learned he had converted to Catholicism three (3) years before he met my mother. After telling a Jewish friend of mine, she asked me if I would convert back. I told her I have nothing to convert back to. I have never known the Jewish faith and can find no reason to return to it. Now, I am TLM and very, very happy in my choice. I don’t believe my father ever regretted becoming Catholic. His family was worth lots of money and said it would all be his, if he would just renounce his Catholic faith. My dad did not renounce anything. He was a good man. My younger sister had breast cancer and a woman she met said our family must have been Ashkenazi. We have had many physical issues all our lives. Thank you for giving me this time to speak of our history. Always, God bless!!

There's a contradiction to your story. You said that you found out many years after your father died that he was Jewish. But, you also say he had a rich family that would have given him wealth if he renounced his Catholic faith. That doesn't add up because if you didn't know that your father was Jewish until many years after he died, then you could not have known that he came from a rich Jewish family that asked him to renounce his faith. At most, you heard that story from someone else after he died, which would have been heresay.

Myriad Genetics said it was predominantly Ashkenazi Jews who have BRCA 1 and 2. The cost for Myriad Genetics gene test was $8K a decade or so ago. I went with a different company for a more comprehensive panel. How many minorities were tested to determine that BRCA 1 and 2 are predominantly Jewish breast cancer genes? Many can’t afford that price.

I suggest everybody should research the moynihan report. It talks about how black families were changing and kind of predicted what is happening today. They saw that when mens unemployment in white communities was low, so was the welfare rate. When they started helping black men get jobs and into unions the black man unemployment rate went down but the welfare rate still kept going up. Black women having been choosing a government check over a man since the 60s.

Sorry, that's not correct. While your diet can be a factor in some kinds of cancers, heritability plays a major role in cancer risk. Major environmental factors also include smoking, UV exposure, and prolonged exposure to certain hazardous chemicals. Hope that helps!
