+InMaTeofDeath I think alot of criminals go there just to make a name for themselves, an "I went up against Batman" kind of thing. He also tends to attract or create the really crazy people also (joker for instance). In the begining of his career when he was fighting just normal criminals he made a significant dent in crime. But now he spend so much time with the outlandish villains regular crime and corruption have time to flourish.

Alex M Metropolis was safer in the sense that Lex Luthor operated behind the curtains, instead of building killer robots and contracting other supervillains. But that was just a fake sense of safety.

Such a high crime rate in Gotham probably makes housing prices dirt cheap.

They can actually but they just don't want to. The reason is Gotham, surprisingly despite all the bad stuff and all is an easy place to get rich given that it's one of the biggest global trade cities in the DC Universe, and that answer's why crime rates are so high in Gotham. Now I know everyone's asking the same question, "then why the people of Gotham still live below the high class." Well, to answer it, given that the crime rates are so high in Gotham you wouldn't wanna be caught driving a Lambo around the streets or wearing 24K on your neck and wrists wouldn't ya? You're better off NOT being a bait for muggers if you wanna stay alive. And besides, remember what I told you that Gotham is a place where anyone can get rich? But other than marketing and trade of course, majority only do business with the crime ridden city from safe distances. Doing business directly inside of Gotham however is way different. Despite a high risk you can leave home early with more than enough money you can use in 3-6 months. So moving out means losing a great source of income you can't usually get from other cities beside Gotham.

Gotham is probably considered safe in DC's world. I mean Detroit has bang babies from Static Shock, Metroplish has godly aliens beating each other, ect.

+142doddy gotham would be huge also and its a tech center and the jobs are everywhere and its the headquarters of an american power house wayne enterprises fox industries and more there is gambling and mega concerts its got a square bigger and better than new york random monuments multi century old historic districts multiple esteemed schools its runs 24 hours a day they have movie studios and more sounds like an awesome place to live and anyone can afford to be there

I think the crazy shit that happens in Gotham happens less frequently than we might think. I mean, Joker doesn't attack Gotham EVERYDAY, he plans his schemes and then strikes, so maybe there's weeks, months or even years between stuff that happens. Gotham's also a huge city; not everyone in there has been affected by every known super villain... yet. It's kinda like how people still live in Metropolis despite all the aliens, monsters and gods that show up to rip them a new one: it probably happens less that we think. The same with Marvel; Lord knows Doom ain't got time to fight the F4 24/7. After all, he's got a country to run.

The Wayne family was part of an elite class in Gotham's society that represented the upper echelons of the city. then there was a middle class that pretty much kept the city functioning, and then the part of Gotham that was corrupt and filled with crime. The crime in Gotham stretched from the street gangs, muggers, pushers, pimps, and murderers, straight up through the ranks of organized mob crime families and corporate criminals, and corrupt city officials and law enforcement. And then you have the rogue's gallery of psychopaths, sociopaths, and hired killers, all of whom have their own obsessive compulsive fetishes and theatrical methods. Gotham is a city of layers - Victorian era gothic, retro 1940's era film noir, and 21st century art deco, all wrapped up in one city. And let's not forget, it's not like Metropolis, Central City, Star City, and Coast City haven't all been on the verge of annihilation from time to time.

I lived in Sao Paulo. Everyone kept asking me about the crime and were almost disappointed when I explain to them that I was never robbed, mugged, kidnapped, etc. Bigger cities means more crime simply because of population. Doesn't mean it happens around every corner.

Q: Why Do People STILL Live in Gotham? A: because without them getting into danger, batman would be unemployed.

Like Hindsight lad -his city has like one stop light, and his arch enemy is some perv who flashes people in the park on the 3rd of every month. I think that we believe that Gotham is so bad because of the selective Bias, but this could be applicable to any other Comic Book series. Why is this one different? Well, it's because of Batman's seclusion. We think that Central City, for example, is better than Gotham because we see the Flash interacting with citizens, working with the cops, and generally being a nice person.He seems cheery and optimistic, so his city does as well. But we don't seem to think of Batman as Optimistic, because- he's not. And we, as humans, make connections between characters and their settings in our minds, so Batman is Gloomy and distant, so Gotham is as well. It's all psychological.

I love that theory! I always just assumed that it was because Gotham's economy was so screwed up. It seems like in most incarnations of the city there are only rich people and poor people without much of a working/middle class in between. The rich wouldn't want to move away because they'd lose power, and the poor really wouldn't have a choice. But actually, the more I think about it, the more I like the idea that there's normal stuff going on elsewhere while Batman's blowing things up. The only 2 times I've sort of experienced snow where I live is Aus they've told us it was just very fine hail. Kinda ruined my buzz, but hey! It helps to maintain your illusion a bit!

I'm not saying there isn't a middle class, I'm just saying that they really don't get much attention. Going back to the video, this could just be my own confirmation bias only seeing lower and upper class citizens portrayed in the comics because to me they get much more spotlight than any middle class citizens. But I'm sure there are normal people living normal lives, like I said in the video. We just don't see them as much.

Maybe it has a great economy and that’s why people stay. It’s like a theory on why some henchmen apply to work for the Joker; he may kill you, or let Batman beat you up, but if you survive, you’ll get a big score and a big rep.

It's kinda like how Europeans see Americans living with such extreme gun violence and wonder, "how can American's live with more people dying by guns than by car crashes?"

Car crashes happen every day and just isn't that interesting. I think the thing is that we hear about gun deaths from waaaaay over the atlantic ocean way more often than we hear about gun deaths in Europe. And even if we heard about them happening more here than in the wild west where people ride horses and resolve family issues with guns, we always have our confirmation bias to fall back on :p Except maybe for the horses part...

Another thing to point out is the Extreme majority of those gun deaths are suicides. Generally speaking, those people will usually kill themselves with something else if they don't have access to guns. For future reference, pay attention to how people distinguish the cause of death. A Extremely common but deceitful tactic used by gun-control activists is to list “gun deaths” rather than “gun murders”. The number of gun murders is EXTREMELY SMALL in comparison to the number of gun deaths.

There's also another factor you haven't mentioned and that is the economy. Many people live in dangerous areas but refuse to move because moving to another location, even to another house means saving up money that most times they don't have. It could be as well that the land is theirs and it's either difficult to sell or it's already devaluated because of the danger. There's also the situation of employment, moving out can also mean losing their place of work and that represents even greater challenges, especially to low and middle-income families that don't have the means to save up enough to move and pay for another place while searching for a job. And finally, because the area is a "red zone" the cost of housing must be rather cheap, at least in some areas, there's obviously a wealthy community, but is definitely not all, so in the other areas there's cheaper rent or mortgage so they're actually able to pay it and don't want to move cause they know is expensive in other places.

There is also the irksome consideration that a lot of people just can't afford to pull up stakes and move away. They can't afford to let it hang until they get a new job and a home they can afford. They don't have any roots outside of Gotham or wherever they are for support. Or what they do is so tied to [where they are] it is literally the ONLY place they can make a living and thus stay.

Janet Gray To be fair Batman has saved a lot of lives, and he does try to help Gotham with all the money he has. He's the anti-Lex Luthor. But until they get a hero who doesn't have emotional baggage preventing them from killing the bad guys, I'd say Gotham isn't going to get better anytime soon.

Clearly they live there for the excellent school system. I'm basing this on how many of Batman's enemies are doctors. There is Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, Man-bat, Scarecrow, and probably a lot of others those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

Well, it's also the concept that every character in DC continually talk about how bad it is to live in Gotham, even average citizens who aren't involved in crime. It's not just that we see horrible stuff happen, but that people continually talk about how horrible it is.

Alot of people can't imagine living in another place. You can find alot of people who aren't even criminals and live in a bad neighborhood but call it home. It all depends on the individual. Some are used to living in certain areas because they grew up in that area and are used to it. Others don't.

It can be said witj many slums in third world countries where the eldest of grandpas and grandmas had lived in a certain slum their whole lives because that is home with family and friends. I imagine that Gotham, although not a slum and certainly a rich city, can be considered that too.

Also, don't forget: where would you move if you were a Gothamite? Star City? Central City? All the other cities in the DC universe are constantly under attack also, so...think about that. It would have to be the country but some folks don't wanna live in the country...and when they're forced, they end up in Kansas, only to be killed by someone evil who got powers during the meteor shower or something...my 2 cents.

Exactly this. Compared to the real world, Gotham is far more dangerous but in the comic world? This thing happens all the time. Almost every large city seems to have a superhero and supervillains. The entire planet/galaxy/universe is constantly under threat of being destroyed. There really is no good safe place to run. As you said, MAYBE they can move to the country but as smallville shows, there's likely still problems there. And even then it's probably not a big enough change for people to really notice. Like the murder rate in the US is far higher than other developed countries but no one really uses that as a reason to move away. As was said in other comments, that's where the jobs are as well. And maybe crime isn't actually that much worse in the big cities, it's just more show-y. Instead of random street gangs, you have the joker and the riddler. I'm sure they keep the petty crime relatively low as well in gotham. (like how the yakuza keep other crimes fairly low in japan)

Also, I think this once again goes back into confirmation bias, right? So there are around 2.5 million cities in the world. There's probably more on the DC Earth since it's been said be be a bit larger than our Earth. The number of total cities we've seen in the comics is a tiny fraction of that amount. There are millions of cities that we haven't seen in the comics that could possibly be just normal cities without heroes or villains, but we only see the cities where the action happens.

Gotham is new york or any major city in a nutshell crime and death is always on the news yet the city as a whole is a decent place to live and you got better things to worry about than the chance of being killed like the price of rent for one

I currently live there and can tell you that at the very least it’s never snowed in or around where I live. But it’s possible like in Canberra and Victoria are cold so yeah maybe

In 2010 and 2006, it snowed in parts of Australia on Christmas and Boxing Days - remembering that Australia is in the southern hemisphere, so that's smack bang in the middle of _summer_

I would imagine in the southern parts at higher altitudes, but nowhere else. Kind of like how it snows (or just generally gets cold) in Texas every now and then.

@@a.morphous66 Not only at high altitudes, but much more common, yeah. Much of New South Wales, the ACT and Victoria are more akin to a midwestern American state than Texas. I'm in about the middle of rural Victoria, nowhere near the alpine region, and this past winter I had enough snow to the point I'd have to dig my car out. It also snows all over Tasmania, the state off the mainland, which is closer to Oregon or Washington State; Hobart is the only major city in the country that gets a decent amount of snow, though.

I'm still wondering why people still choose to live in New York city in the Marvel universe.... or even the real one, for that matter.

Guess some people like crowds. Then again they often live in an apartment and don't speak to their neighbors, so maybe they don't actually like crowds.

Probably the same reason people still live in Detroit or other places with high crime rates and acts of violence.

Chris McWilliams You know, people don´t really live in Detroit. They just flew from it and that is one of the reasons why parts of the city look completely post-apocalyptic. People leave Detroit everyday. I'd add the additional condition that this is a universe full of crazy threats and catastrophes, and living in a city with vigilante protectors might be safer than that other city with a second rate protector, or none at all...

Gotham is one thing, but Marvel's New York has a ridiculously high hero and super-villain density. How many times a week can Time Square be destroyed until nobody wants to work there anymore? lol

You always bring up very interesting and rational points, Scott. As a longtime comic book fan, I love your videos!

The title of this video reminds me of a problem that I have with New York City in Marvel Comics. There is a cool short story about Speedball. He tries all day to transform into his super hero identity. His powers are based on kinetic energy, so he tries jumping out of buildings, getting hit by cars, being electrocuted, etc. To Speedball's dismay, each time his tries, a random super hero saves him from harm. At the end of the story, he walks into the New Warriors headquarters and asks, "How many super heroes are in this city?" It is meant as a rhetorical question to express his frustration. However, one of his teammates answers. I don't remember the exact quote or number, but the teammate says a number around 115. I remember another mini-story in a comic book (or it might have been something akin to Mad Magazine) that showed several super heroes literally running, flying, or swinging into each other. The problems become so bad that the city issue traffic cops on floating platforms to direct the abundant super hero activity. Just as one might ask, "Why do people still live in (insert super hero city) because of the rampant exotic crime?", I have wondered, "Why are so many people still trying to commit crimes in New York, since the place has so many damn super heroes?" I understand that Marvel operated (at the time) primarily from New York City. It can be more interesting for both the authors and the readers to explore stories about real world local places. New York is a huge territory, with unique neighborhoods, politics, history, and ethic groups. On the one hand, New York as a lot to offer. On the other hand, some of the heroes that regularly operate in New York area are Spider-Man, Daredevil, Luke Cage, Punisher, Fantastic Four, Avengers, New Warriors, and the X-Men. There are also the minor teams, like Heroes for Hire, the Mighty Avengers, and Power Pack. Of course, there are still the regular police and FBI forces to contend with. With all those heroes in and around New York, the biggest crimes should be misdemeanors, like jaywalking and littering, or white collar crimes, like embezzlement and identity theft. What thief believes he can rob a bank or snatch a purse with over 100 heroes running around? LOL

I live in Australia. I can confirm that it does snow, I've just never, ever, ever, ever, ever seen it. Okay, perhaps I can't confirm, but I've heard stories from friends and family about it snowing in places like the Blue Mountains.

Excellent point. WARNING: I'm gonna get a little deep here. We currently live in a world where bad things happen but we limit the thought to those things happening to us because those bad things happen to those people over there. Like the thought that crime only happens in bad neighbor hoods, or that women are attacked because the women were doing something wrong (i.e. the notion of "she was asking for it). Both statements are wrong but so many people still believe it to be true because it re-enforces the idea that their world is safe and predictable.

Stewdippin : Fun Nerdy Videos Every Week Great points, Ricky. Victim-blaming is fairly common and flexible enough to be used on almost any scenario. "Two-Face killed some cops? Well, they shouldn't have been corrupt in the first place!" and other similar ways of thinking. We tell ourselves that the victim had it coming because of what they were doing, how they were acting, etc. Then we try to convince ourselves that we are better than the victims in some way, and that's why we'll be fine. Anytime someone says the phrase "I'll be careful" when entering a risky situation in a movie or tv show, it almost always goes wrong. The thought process is that the character knows it's a dangerous scenario, but they are better off and safer because apparently everyone else before them wasn't trying to be careful. I guess it's just a way for us to comfort ourselves instead of being paranoid that bad things that are out of our control could happen to us at any moment of any day.

well this iz a deeper discussion then i thought i would get on a comic video! i found your comparison of comics to news papers very accurate , in that conflicted storys are wut brings in readers. that being a reflection of people. we tend to dwell on the bad and negative thnigs in our lives opposed to embracing and cherishing the good things.we take the good things for granted and just spend all our time focused on the negative things. if you read newspapers and watch the news that really iz how it looks. with that i think this line of thinking "it only happens to other people", iz a way for us to cope with all this crazy negativity screaming at our faces. other wise we would be to afraid to do any thing " wanna catch the bus and go to the bar to night?" " do you have any idea how many people die in bus related accidents or how many people get drugg'd at bars? no thanks. thats crazy talk. i've seen the numbers, it could happen to any one!" we put things in to lil bite size chucks we can digest such as the " thats place can have crime but not my backyard" as a way of protecting our selves from harsh realities. ...well that was a big ramble... great video! much more thought provoking then the title suggested! keep up the great work!!! also yes ppl in gotham are just plain crazy to still be living there. but that crowd gave birth to some of the craziest villains of all time, so i can't be surprised they are still live there.

And go where? Coast City to be killed by Mongul? Star City to be killed by Prometheus? Central City to die of a heart attack due to the fast pace of life?

Why do people still live in Gotham? A chance to meet the batman of course! Maybe even an autograph?

I think that you're perfectly right saying that are view of Gotham is altered. I really enjoy your videos because you don't just tell us your opinion, you research information on something and then you elaborate a theory with it, well done!

I am an Australian and I live in Queensland (one of the states in the top section, aka the hot place) and Tasmania (a state in the bottom of Australia) snows almost all year round. The stereotype that Australia is a hot place everywhere is completely false. Great video Scott!

Cool topic all though it could have been answered way quicker. Why do people still live in Detroit ?

They are to poor to move out, or if they have enough money they might get shot for having that money in the first place.

Well, Joker taking a joyride through the city and flipping a truck probably doesn't rate very high as an inconvenience for the majority of Gotham's residents, but by the third film the entire city has been cut off from the outside world and taken over by terrorists. That kind of large scale complete societal breakdown is probably not something you can simply shrug off as "not my problem" and keep going about your everyday life.

I live in Australia and it does snow here. But only in the coldest of Winters, in the south, on top of mountains. Seriously, you have to drive so high to get to snow it's scary.

Gotham’s architecture and aesthetic is so interesting that I would choose to move there honestly...

If you merge all the comic universes together, Gotham is just another city, and possibly relatively safe. New York, Avengers Chicago, Transformers 3 Both were completely destroyed and people were vaporized randomly. I mean, sure, it would suck to be caught in the building that Scarecrow attacks, but maybe you'll end up with a bad night to forget.

Decent people shouldn't live here in Gotham. They'd be happier someplace else-Jack Napier, Batman 1989

It makes so much sense what he said in this, in comics, we only see the exciting stuff happen, so if a story has the joker escaping and then being caught, then the very next story has him escaping again, it could of been weeks or a few months since the last story took place but we only see the action, same in tv shows, they live normal lives and only occasionally we see the things that they get into abnormally, like cops shows could of had a bunch of petty crimes between big cases but we only ever get to peer in on the big stuff and never the day to day "boring" stuff

This was a really good episode. The cognitive bias section struck home for me; I was a young-earth creationist for way too much of my life.

Most of the people that Batman deals with are more interested in robbing you than leveling several city blocks. Even when the Joker kills 5 or 10 people it makes the evening news and is forgotten by the end of the month in a city of millions, just like in LA or New York today. The average Gothamite doesn't have to deal with the full Batman level craziness very often. The people who live in whatever city the power rangers happen to live in are, in contrast, quite crazy. Their city gets half-leveled once a week in fights between giant robots and monsters that probably leave hundreds dead at best. There is no reasonable expectation of safety there and every reason to expect imminent death or financial ruin unless you are in the construction business and even then the city would run out of money within a month so you wouldn't get paid.

7:08 Holy, I had no idea that a massive urbanized landscape was THAT close to the great pyramids. I thought there was a lot of desert space between the two, such as like the distance represented by the lower half of the photo. Even then I didn't think a city next to it would be that huge.

There are ton of reasons why they might continue to live there. Economy is one of them. Not everybody has the resources to move to another city, others can't risk quitting their job. Others cities like metropolis might be more expensive or the their jobs require higher level of education. Also the Wayne foundation helps a lot of people

Down in Australia we have these things we sometimes call "mountains". But you might call them oversized hills, but it does snow up there occasionally. I've been up one... took a rock home.... It was not worth the walking.

I like how citizens of Gotham are introduced as “fighters” or “knights” Citizens of New York are called “New Yorkers” and Citizens of Gotham are called “Gothamites” Gotham + knights = Gothamites

They can easily do it Sherlock Holmes style though---Batman is bored to death because nothing is going on, it is peaceful and stuff. Then something happens. That will establish that Gotham is normally peaceful.

DarthAlphaTheGreat Yes, but it's made clear in the books that case-splving is one of Sherlock's main ways of entertaining himself, so all you need to do is show him bored at the start of the book and/or mention a lack of cases to get that across. However, Batman doesn't find entertainment through crime-fighting the same way Sherlock does (in fact, he would probably be grateful for a few days with no big crimes), so showing him bored because of it is just strange for him. Your first example of how to do it was great (helping people with little things, lazing around, etc.), but the second example just doesn't quite get the message across since it'll just end up like a regular issue.

Hi Scott, I am Australian who loves visiting the snow every year. It is honestly my favourite sport. I can send photographic proof as well as link you to ski resorts here. It amazing fun and as beautiful as snow anywhere else!

i live in australia and to clarify the snowing it usually only occurs in the colder seasons (obvious) in the sou eastern parts of the country where it's cold enough and still enough moister in the air to snow, but the snow usually only envelopes the areas in higher altitudes, so if you want to have a snow day in australia you have to be in the southern easter parts of australia in high altitude areas.hopefully that discredits your disbelief :D

Yes it snows in Australia, but only in some small places like near Canberra. Most everywhere else it just rains and on occasion (bad weather) it might hail. That's about it. Plus it's lovely here.

Hi Scott, I just just watched this video and am a big fan of any and all superhero related things. I do live in Australia (however I like to call it Aussie-ralia) and I can 100% confirm that yes, it does snow in Australia. However it only snows in certain places towards the eastern side of the country such as the mountain towns in Melbourne or some towns close to Sydney when it is really cold. Hope that clears it up for you!

He's got a point. I live in Israel, which in general is a lot safer than the US (murder rate 1.8 vs. 4.7 for the US vs. 6.2 worldwide), although you'd never know it from the news.

I remember my uncle telling me something similar. When he was deployed during the Gulf War( I don't remember where.)there was almost nothing happening most of the time. But some days there might be a few hours of real fighting but then nothing for weeks.

Here is another thought, what is Bruce Wayne\Batman is an unreliable narrator. The comics are from Batman's perspective, perhaps he sees the world worse then it really is. In Bruce's mind perhaps everything is exaggerated. The whole concept of his universe makes sense then. There aren't any "super villians" we are just seeing a caricature of the criminals he's fighting in his own mind. A good film example is Sucker Punch. What if in the context of Batman we are getting his Sucker Punch version of Gotham. Otherwise don't you think Superman and every other super hero would have put the Hall of Justice smack in the middle of Gotham? That due to the huge blight that Gotham had become you'd have a dozen+ super heroes working the place? The only thing that makes the status quo possible, is it is mostly in Bruce's head. How else does a 12 year old side kick survive? What if Bruce is in a mental ward, Gordon is the sympathetic orderly, Robin's is another patient, Barbra is another orderly working with her dad. The Joker and the rogue gallery other patients. Even if he isn't he might be exaggerating everything and that is what we see. He may well be part of the Justice League, he might well be as skilled as he is portrayed, but perhaps his vision of Gotham itself is warped.

Idgarad Lyracant Even if all the comics that follow Batman are from his perspective (which would be really odd with all the scenes he's not in), there are many other characters active in the city that have comics based around them and the atmosphere is generally the same. Even the ones that follow villains.

This is very true but it begs an even bigger problem, if it is as bad, the response from the world and the neglect of Gotham becomes more problematic. It's never really explained why Gotham is more or less abandoned by not only the government, but the Justice League, other super heroes, etc. It's a comic book problem since the status quo must be maintained, the story problem is exacerbated more so then. However, perhaps it is we the reader who get an entire "caricature" perspective of the world. Imagine the DC world is real, but is far more toned down then we see via the comics. Everything is amp'ed up from what it really is but the translation to comic book format, the background citizens are living in the 'real' world of the DV universe but we read the distorted amp'ed up version.

At some points in Australia it can get really cold but heating costs a lot, like a bunch so if you're going to live there then bring a jumper

Honestly, Detroit seems worse than Gotham and people still live there. Why? Probably poverty, it's expensive and risky to move.

I've only been to the snow once in Aus, it does but the snow is quite far from cities and suburbs like Mt Bulla

Australia has a lot of desert. As you would know, a desert can get very hot during the day and very cold during the night. They flood more often than you might think and you can get snow too. If you get heavy snow during a hot day, then you need top climb up onto the roof and shovel it off, otherwise it can melt so quickly your roof can collapse. Most years, however, it's just peaceful and normal here.

With all the terrible things that happen in Gotham, believe it or not my country is worse. Rampant crime and corruption, gang wars and political agendas. But we still live here because we have built lives here: family, friends, jobs. Sure some people leave, but most choose to stay. It's not easy to just uproot yourself and leave the world you've known for your whole life. Most people have learned to live and even thrive in the situation.

Worse. Metro Manila. Just the other day, caught on camera was a man walking alone at night getting mugged by a gang who drove up to him in a car. The catch is the license plate of the car was 8. Just 8. In our country, that means the car is owned by a congressman. And this isnt even the worst thing that happens on a regular basis. Hell, someone got shot on my street last year, and I live in the good side of town. Are people rallying in the streets demanding for justice? Nope. Too scared or too apathetic or just simply helpless. Most of dont even know anymore. We just keep on going and hope it doesnt happen to us or our loved ones.

In reference to the note about our own cognitive biases it is worth pointing out that we don’t live in a world where super powers are a thing. One has to consider that, in the marvel and DC universes, dangers the likes of which we know nothing are everywhere. No matter where you live, you have probably been exposed to the idea of super villains going on killing sprees because super villains exist here. In our own world, one risks a much higher murder rate if one makes the decision to move to a bigger city but that doesn’t play into most of our decisions to live in places like New York or LA. The same is true in Gotham. It has a high population. It’s a tech hub. It’s an economic hub due to the wayne’s presence there. Gotham has all the hallmarks of a high demand city, and, like all such cities, crime rises as population rises. It’s just that, in comic book universes, the stakes are higher to begin with. I know I’m mixing mythologies here but Asgard, for instance, crashed in Broxton, Oklahoma so one doesn’t escape the cosmic drama of living in a comic book universe by living in a small town. When you are born and live every day on the same planet as a whole class of people who could rip you to shreds with a thought, it will fundamentally change the way that you assess risk. Instead of comparing Gotham to cities on our planet, one should think of comparing it to smaller towns in the DC universe. I’d say that Gotham probably compares to Smallville about the same way that New Jersey compares to Oklahoma, and people probably live there for the same reason people live in New Jersey. They grew up there, or they moved there for the economic opportunity, or they got a job for Wayne Industries and were transferred there, or they were stationed there in the military, or whatever other reason that people move from small, crime free towns, to larger, higher crime cities anywhere.

Norrin Radd I think you're right. There are likely kinds who grew up in a world where superheroes and super villains exist, so it's just a part of normal life for them. Probably a terrible analogy, but I look at my little nephews who are all less than 5 years old and can use smart phones and iPads with ease where my parents have a hard time understanding them. Not sure if that really applies to anything you said, but it made me think about it. Kids are growing up with awesome technology and just accepting it as a part of their world. I hope that makes sense.

It does actually snow in Australia however, it does so only in high altitude places like on top of mountains. There is a mountian range called the Snowy Mountains and it's called this cause, well it's a mountain where it snows every winter. It also snows in Tasmania as well cause that state is far enough south near the antartic for it but again more so on top of mountains. There are more places dotted about that will get cold enough for frost to appear on the ground over night during winter but this doesn't happen often but it can happen.

I belive gotham was a very productive city. Skycraper buildings were always related to extensive economic activity. So it can be a city of job opportunities.

even our deserts have lots of trees in them but its in the north and middle of Australia were its really hot not to sure about every where else in Australia but perth is pretty much perfect weather all year round never to hot or cold

I just went through all the Joker related comics I either own or remembered and read online and so far the number of on screen Joker kills have racked up to over 200. Furthermore, I barely even touched any comics prior the 1980s. If one criminal could do this I can imagine at least 500 casualties just with the combination of the big leagues like Penguin, Ras, and Dent and with a little imagination, 1000 in total from Batman's entire rogue gallery. Since Gotham's population is speculated to be 10 million, that could mean 1% of Gotham's population. 1% is a crazy number and if I lived in Gotham, I would GTFO as fast as possible.

This is a very good point. It takes me back to the "Mean-World Syndrome" idea in many of my classes here in college. When I first thought about Gotham, I thought it was a lot like Detroit. Obviously, I was wrong. But I remember I had a class with a sorority girl who was from Memphis, and she never was from some crime filled wasteland that many people in Tennessee like to think of.

Why do people live in Chicago?

They stay because the property valuers are insanely low, I don't have to tell you why. As a result, Gotham is full of very poor people who can't afford to move to sunny Metropolis.

Luppercus Yes, you're probably right, but would you agree that People in Metropolis enjoy a city with higher property values and it has far less slums and its people are generally upper middle-class? In Gotham, WHY they stay is more likely linked to an economic inability to move from where they can afford to a place they cannot.Which is why most stay. That or within Gotham's upper classes its better to stay in a city that is tolerant of corrupt businessmen, politicians, police and corporate bankers, etc...And while its true Metropolis has attacking Aliens, it also has Superman and he's universally appreciated much more than Batman who mostly operates as a vigilante enforcer who uses torture, violence and obtains confessions through beatings and violating every civil rights, property and personal in the book to get results. Don't get me wrong I like Batman, I'm just saying Gotham's rate of poverty probably has more to do with its people staying.

blackburn9 yes I get what you're saying and agree, but I doubt all Metropolis is from high middle class to high class, probably also has some areas that are very poor, just not shown

+Luppercus It has been mentioned in some Superman titles that there is at least one small slum area. But how often does Metropolis feature anyone that's on skid row. The whole population of Metropolis seems to feature people pulling in 6 figures, everyone's in nice suits, or nice attire, the women all wear the latest fashions and the scientists are all incredibly well funded. Actually Marvel's version of New York would be an insane place to remain living given the constant battles, I mean the accumulated radiation exposure from all the different highly potent energy expenditures from heroes and villains ought to be enough to ramp up cancer rates and infertility should be sky high.

I’m Aussie and just like a lot of countries, snow only falls mostly at the south of the country right down the bottom like Victoria or Tasmania or nsw

There is snow in Eastern Australia, and like, once in my lifetime it came close here in the west, but both don't happen daily.

+Rob Lena Well, for wizard kids there really isn't any better place to go, unless you want to move to another country. For muggleborn children, really, would you deny your kid a chance to become a wizard for ANY reason? Like, that'd be the most dickish parenting move ever. "Sorry son, I know you've got this extremely rare chance to learn about magic and monsters, but I'd rather you hit the books and become an accountant."

David Provencher Why would they have to move to another country? Don't they have magic that can transport them through time and space? First their was a troll, ok mistakes happen and some times they are very big mistakes that can eat your kids. A year later there is a basilisk. Then an escaped convict makes its way into hogwarts. After a while you find out voldemort was the cause of these problems. So if your kid doesn't get killed by this they will probably die by the tri-wizard tournament. Yeah kid you have to fight a dragon now, good luck. Or quiddich which its a freaking miracle no one has died by that but they are playing russian roulette with that one. Sure I understand the fascination with learning about these other worlds but maybe an accountant isn't that bad of a job if it means your kid is safe.

I typed up this huge response before I decided that it really wasn't worth my time to finish. If you really don't get why people would go to Hogwarts, then nothing I say would convince you.

+Rob Lena Well, maybe the parents don't actually know about the risks of going into hogwarts, or maybe the years depicted are the exception rather than the rule for normal hogwarts years. In fact on books, 1 and 4 the normal hogwart student wouldn't have many risks to their lives, nor would they perceive a great amount of danger. If you stop to think about it, most of the events (if not all), happen around Harry Potter (which is to expect for a protagonist), you don't find out about ravenclaws adventures, or if some Hufflepuffs get lost in the woods. For all that we know, most of the other students just go to class like any other school, and don't face many dangers.

+Rob Lena Besides, there other more practical reasons, for example: It seems to be the only wizard school on the whole country, which is a Huge monopoly, so, if you want to do anythign magical, well, Even if the place were to be a warzone, it could very much be worth it. And when you think about it, Wizard parents are even more forced to send their children there, sicne every good job depicted on the Harry Potter Universe uses magic. If they didn't learn magic there, they would not get to learn any magic at all, which would mean that they don't get to have any good job. These parents also estudied in Hogwarts from an early age, (11 years old) so they lack much knowledge of more practical things, such as math or biology. For them, being wizard is all that there is in the world, otherwise, you are filthy Muggle.

Hell, a couple of years back, there was a shooting just up the street from me. It's such a rare occurrence, though, I really don't feel the need to worry about it.

This reminds me of a short story in Astro City, (vol. 1, I believe) A man moves to Astro City with his young daughters, a weather god attacks on the first night and wreaks his neighbourhood, and he sees the amazing spirit of the comunity and the moral values his daughters can learn, and decides not to turn tail and run away like most of us would.
