Good video and very relatable. I would’ve liked to have seen mention of SMPLive, which I would argue popularized large youtuber SMPs and similarly kickstarted many creator’s careers

I usually do a good amount of research before video development starts, but because Showtime had a deadline, so did I. Dream SMP and QSMP were fresh enough I trusted myself to use those more. I would've totally gone for SMPLive if O had more time!!

An aspect usually forgotten is the administrative aspect of SMPs, you are trying to bring together a bunch of people with a bunch of different personalities and ideas, and unless it's with your group of already preexisting friends (where there is already a general consensus), the biggest challenge in these SMPs are trying to make everyone satisfied and not feel left out. That thing you mentioned towards the end is actually the best part of the video (not matter how short it was), which is to focus on surviving and existing in the first place. Xisuma mentioned something like this in his "Leadership Lessons From Hermitcraft" video but focusing first on what you can bring to the table and your own little community rather than aspiring (or worse expecting) to be similar to the largest SMPs out there. Overall great video hope your SMP does well :).

The only smp that ive seen last for so long is Hermitcraft. Like they have 9 seasons almost 10 years hermitcraft smp has been doing stuff.

mods are a good way of keeping your SMP alive, since they can bring new and interesting things to the table.

Due to Showtimes launch I had a limited amount of time to make this video! I had no time to educate myself on Lifesteal, Hermitcraft ect. So I ran with what I did know and it worked out fine for the video's context regardless, maybe a part two, who knows!

just a word of advice - opinion pieces should still be well researched. It's pretty clear at what point you started watching this content. you're missing so much context before dream it's hard to take the ensuing opinions seriously. I'm not sure how you omit giants of the past like mindcrack.... or hermitcraft; a SMP that represents all types of gameplay from insane survival builds to extreme technical minecraft.... and is constantly striving to improve interaction and it's storytelling. Notably - and this is an observation not an anti-dream take - why did the already well established hermitcraft only grow in viewers in the time that DreamSMP was at its peak - why did it survive the decline from the first golden age of youtube minecraft content. All creators involved have to approve new members. It's a publicly known fact - nothing ever leaks/there is no drama, and it's just... good. It's the best SMP in existence - name another about to enter it's 10th season thats... i found this a frustrating watch... because it ignores everything that came before dreamSMP. it ignores the very obvious flaws as to why DreamSMP failed and it ignores the SMP entering it's 10th season unfazed by any month to month trend that... i mean docm had mojang devs tour the server for his episode after TinFoilChief passed for levity. doc has a fraction of the YT subs of most of dreamSMP members... but most all of the who's who of technical minecraft works with him to show off what they've been up to... and mojang dev's are happy to be a part of his video's even mojang has chimed in on this with the last april fools snapshot where the moon was a rather big feature - a direct reference to hermitcraft s8... and the "life is but a dream" vote where... they took a position lol. ffs long term imo lifesteal will prove to have been more important than dreamSMP - i just watched a video where Branzy and Rekrap2 try to build the internet in minecraft. they both cite mattbatwings as "yo we learned these concepts from him and we're trying to do it ourselves and dang it's hard". Thats awesome.... Hermitcraft is rare... not every SMP can be run by Xisumavoid. technoblade was already huge before joining and he's unfortunately passed; dreamSMP needed techno imo... meanwhile Mumbo, 8 or 9 million subscriber mumbo, took a good portion of the near 2 year long season 9 of hermitcraft off.... etho; of "etho hopper clock fame" also started late - both for personal reasons, both came back strong and embraced by their fellow server mates... and despite these two huge creators being absent - it was the best season yet - i'd say it's debatable but name another SMP that resulted in a IRL TCG released off an in server minigame & Decked Out 2 - which; most everyone on that server helped tango create the most impressive and complex minigame in minecraft history *in survival*. I feel like this really only highlighted the worst tactics that can lead to short term success for SMP's - not the factors that lead to creators making their best content helped by their peers for years on end like the best of the best SMP's seem to foster.

This is a super well written comment that I will take to heart entirely! I do want to add that this video has a deadline due to me joining the SMP I announce at the end! I've watched MC content for absolutely forever! SMPLive and SMP Earth are servers I loved too and I would've absolutely done a deep dive into hermitcraft too being as gigantic as it is. I just did not have the time for it with this video Hope this adds a tad more clarity but don't see it as me discrediting what you had to say, you bring extremely valid points that I will keep in mind for the future o7
