Why Do Low Carb Diets Work For Weight Loss? Here are 4 reasons!

Ғылым және технология

"Why Do Low Carb Diets Work?", is a really interesting question, especially when it comes to losing weight. The really simple answer is that in the absence of carbohydrates our body has to look to its own fat stores to provide energy.
But there is more to it than that...
In this video, I'll explain:
1. How low carb diets reduce insulin production in the body
2. How our hunger is reduced on a low carb diet
3. How low carb diets give us a metabolic advantage
4. How low carb diets might help with food addiction.

Your explanation of how hormones work in our body was well done. Too many people focus too much on just calories. I’m on a low carb diet (keto) and do intermittent fasting as well, and I am blown away with the positive effects it’s had on my mind and body. Yes, the weight loss is welcome, but I am pleasantly surprised that my arthritis has all but gone away. It’s so nice to be able to walk pain free again and I just want to share this magic secret with everyone.

@@hmdz150 I agree. I’ve consistently lost weight on low carb, but my energy levels are so depleted and I feel so exhausted every hour of the day. And vice versa, the more carbs I eat the heavier and more tired I feel. My mood was also all over the place recently, and I couldn’t fight my desire to eat some carbs. Though I lost weight low carb, I couldn’t find myself getting bigger in terms of muscle like I had wanted to, and my strength remained fairly stagnant in the gym. Though I still remain a proponent for the diet as it has very clearly worked for a lot of folks

This really is a « Way of life » and not a short term weight loss diet. I have been doing this for 4 weeks now, and have lost 4 kilos! It was so easy compared to the calorie restricted diets I had always followed before. And the 16/8 fasting works brilliantly for me. I’m truly amazed, and only wish I had known all these concepts sooner!

From personal experience I have learned that cutting the carbs and upping the protein works everytime. It has never failed me. I eat like shit when lifting weights to bulk up, pizza and ice cream mostly, then I cut the carbs out and watch the fat just disappear. Works everytime for me, very satisfying. Sure cutting the carbs can leave you feeling a little tired and drowsy sometimes, but the reward is worth the effort. I love having a 6pack. My advice is to have a 'Never give up' attitude, and to really believe in yourself.

Well, a diet is only a fancy word for the way someone eats. So no matter your lifestyle, unless your fasting, you have a diet. The word has just become synonymus with an unpleasant and temporary change in ones diet, mostly to loose weight. But I'm not here to tell you how to call it. I just thought this bit might be interesting. :D

@@russrichard7114 "not an easy diet to follow" ? It depends, I was never addicted to sugar so it was easy for me, moreover I find everything I'm now eating delicious. For example I often add some butter (I don't feel "guilty" anymore since I started low carb) to brocoli, cauliflower etc., this makes them so much more tasty. Next thing is that our taste adapts quickly as the turnover of taste sensor cells is relatively high, something like 6 weeks I think. Before starting low carb an 85% chocolate didn't seem sweet enough for me but now since it is the only form of sugar I eat I can hardly imagine anything sweeter.

The more carbs that you consume, the more insulin your body has to create to break it down, which usually results in your body having to hold onto more fat. The less carbs you eat in a day, the less insulin your body has to produce which results in the LESS amount of fat your body needs to hold onto. I learned this in Diabetic Ed when I was first diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Things like sugary foods/drinks or high-carb foods creates a spike in your insulin which also makes you feel like you’re still hungry which can result in Binge Eating; which is an eating disorder.

Great info, I always love to add nutritional knowledge to my repertoire. I bulk on a moderate carb intake, just enough to keep muscle glycogen full, and once I hit above a specific body fat percentage, I'll shred by switching to a caloric deficit and drastically reducing carbs. It's crazy how fast I become lean when switching to low carb

I like your channel a lot. I discovered it this week. I've been consulting a nutritionist since November and she created a plan for me to prevent diabetes/ lose weight. Long story short it's 100g carb maximum daily with greens/ proteins filling up the rest of my food space. I've also been training with a personal trainer since last month. Anyways your content is very in line with what my nutritionist says. I've had conversations with other trainers before where they just stressed calorie deficit with anything I want within that deficit. Obviously I didn't follow that but it disappoints me to know many trainers exist that are tunnel vision with calorie deficit when it comes to people's meal plans. You have a real shot at improving this person's overall health (iin addition to just body fat %).

I have been Intermittent Fasting for a couple of years typically on a 19:5 or 20:4 fast to feast ratio. I love the life style and It really makes a difference in my insulin levels. But with insulin resistance sometimes our insulin levels don't always drop to the level that non-insulin resistant people's level do during the fasting period. I have found through experimenting that incorporating a low carb plan in addition to my IF has been the key to a healthier life style and weight loss. Just found your channel and subbed right away.

@@anuronguha0898 Anuron...it is often stated that for a low carb dietary way of eating 20grams of carbs is alright. However, that is barely two slices of bread. The easiest way of thinking is to NOT eat any carbs at all. So, no potatoes, no starchy vegs (those that grown underground) no rice, no pastas, no flour and no grain...remember that sweetcorn is a grain and NOT a vegetable. Eat plenty of fats and meats and eggs and if you wish some vegetables, those that grow above the ground are best. Good luck. I lost over 50lbs since September 2020, my blood pressures are healthy and normal, my acid reflux and fibromyalgia are cured and my rising blood glucose levels are back to normal. hey dr dan. i wanted to get your thoughts on the apetite side of this... i've been doing a low carb diet since Feb 1st this year of only having carbs at breakfast in the form of either one slice of sunflower seed rye bread, half a warbutons protein bagel or some porridge and then lunch, snacks and dinner strictly no carbs. It's going super well and my apetite has significantly dropped as your video says, it's amazing and really surprised me how full I was without carbs! However... last week on Friday I had a baguette for lunch as I was out and was lazy and then in the evening, I wanted to have some pizza on friday night as this is my 'treat night' and so I did. the next morning, i woke up SO hungry.. tummy rumbling like crazy which hasn't happened on any other days. my tummy also rumbled 2 hours after eating the baguette whereas non-carb meals have been filling me up for 4+ hours. I felt hungry all the rest of the weekend but avoided carbs and pushed through it and now i'm back in the flow but I really want to continue with my 'friday night treat night' because it's important to have this when 'dieting' but I want to be able to control the hunger. do you have any tips on how to get around this? my body clearly snapped right back to wanting loads more carbs the moment i ate a lot! thanks so much, Miri

well done explaining things. Yes, I am noticing that I am less hungry at the time that the clock says I should be eating breakfast. Hubby thinks I won't survive, so it's awkward trying to convince him I don't need to eat if I'm not hungry, as he's not joining my low carb journey. We'll just perservere.

To put a lid on hunger, eat protein. I'm a night snacker, historically. But I found that instead of eating popcorn, chips, fruit, etc. if I chopped off a piece of cooked hamburger or got a piece of chicken and a little mayo, maybe some olives to go with it, or nuts, my appetite was gone. Just protein by itself if you are in a hurry, will keep you satisfied. Something in protein does it, and fast.

@@yellowbird5411 I like this. Because I want myself and others to get out of the idea that you have to starve yourself in order to lose weight. Cutting carbs/sugar alone will help a lot of our weight loss problems. I started off intermittent fasting and it helped me lose 16lbs but then it stopped. True i lost weight but i felt like crap. The issue is my body no longer does well without eating. I didn't realize I was having hypoglycemic reactions. Literally almost fainting having constant headaches and fatigue. I eat small meals and snacks (usually nuts) throughout the day and I do HIIT workouts after work no more than 45 minutes total. I don't feel too tired to workout after a full day and I actually get a energy boost while working out. I've been doing low carb only a week and have lost 4lbs. Aside from the weight loss i feel great. Headaches are gone and i'm not shaky. Carbs arent worth my mental, emotional, and physical health.

I agree that high carb is a spiral problem because the more carbs you eat the more you desire to eat. Very true. It also causes cravings that do not happen in the lo-carb environment. Great video and discussion of this subject. BUT lo-carb is one issue, but what restrictions should one place on the other macro-nutrients (fat & protein). I believe I have read that lo-carb PLUS calorie management is the best combo. But there is very little discussion once one embraces lo-carb (or KETO) on what the remainder of the diet should look like; some say eat all you want of fatty foods and others are less "over the top" on that issue. Where is truth? I KNOW that carbs cause insulin rushes that cause me to crash...but how much of the other two categories should I consume?

Excellent video thanks much ! I am over seventy and had not much weight to loose - only about 4 pounds - I thought. So I went on a low carb lifestyle - i.e. below 100 gr / Carb / day and the results are outstanding. I actually lost 10 pounds in ~ 2 months of weight I didn’t know I had somewhere stored , my blood pressure went from over 140 with reduction pills to roughly 125 without pills and my overall reduction of general inflammation does wonders about how I feel in general - that is much much better ! In my humble opinion, there are at least 140 million obese Americans who should consider a low carb lifestyle yesterday !

Love your channel. Could you please talk about the potential dangers of saturated fat and high cholesterol levels? Is it a myth? What's the implications of eating animal fat vs plant fats? Many LCHF spokespeople say plant oils are dangerous and should be avoided as fat source. I tend to agree but I'm no expert. It just seems logical to me that the oils are processed and butter, fats from meat etc are more natural and less artifical in a way.

I don’t overeat, I have dieted most of my life, ever since I started taking prednisone for out of control asthma- usually at least twice a year, plus daily inhalers. So the weight loss and gain has been a constant challenge. I started the keto diet with Dr. Diet, which I loved the idea of, followed the meal, plans and preps, and after four weeks , I had lost no weight at all. nothing. I also, interestingly, gained no weight either. Help! PleSe help x

I would like to know if there is a benefit in reducing carbs substantially (from a carb habit that included daily bread, biscuits and or cake) to say, just having carbs at one meal and cutting out all the sugary extra carbs and bread. Is that likely to be of benefit, especially if I have upped my protein and veg. I find it so hard to go full keto although I would like to commit to it at some point.

Hi Sue, forgive me, couldn't help reply because I've found over the last 18 months that if I want to lose weight fairly easily, I avoid all carbs (only eating meat, green veg and cauliflower, eggs, nuts, seeds, mushrooms, fish, shellfish, 70% dark chocolate). I get a bit of carbs from the veg, and from beans which I try to avoid. Then when you achieve the weight you want to be, you can have mushrooms on a slice of wholemeal toast, or a small amount of pasta when you feel you really need to, about one small teacupful after cooking? You can't keep losing weight, so at that point I've found you can ease up a bit and maintain your happy weight. Hope that helps and good luck, it's well worth sticking to for the other health benefits it brings.

I've been doing very well on a low carb/low calorie diet. I've heard that high insulin and high blood sugar causes fat storage (assuming you are not running a marathon). The plant based diet people claim that their high carb diet works fine as long as you have no fat or protein which might cause high insulin. I assume that high carb food always cause high blood sugar. Are their high carb plant foods that cause high blood sugar but don't cause high insulin? No way am I going to try to find them.
