Why do Koi Fish GROW So Fast in a MUD POND? (Natural Pond)

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Why do Koi grow so fast in a mud pound? (Natural pond) + Examples
Last October I made a number of videos about jumbo Koi who came from the mudpond. In this episode I explain why Koi grow so fast in a mud pound. I show you images of Koi breeders how they do this in Japan.
Before a Koi can reach a certain size they stay in the mud pond for some seasons. Let start at the beginning.

In the summer the temperatures in Niigata rise high, while in winter huge amounts of snow fall. An ideal combination for growing Koi. I explain why:
It is now mid February and the breeders are selling their one year old Koi to their customers from around the world. During this time of the year, the breeders can do little work outside like the snow removal. Inside, the work continues and the breeders slowly prepare for the new season.
In winter, up to 4 of snow can fall in this area. Niigata also has one of the most popular ski areas in Japan.
During the months of March and April, the meters of snow that have fallen into the empty mud ponds melt. During the spring, the mud ponds fill with fresh and ice-cold melt water. When the sun warms the water, the growers can start preparing for the first Koi in the mud ponds.
First the smallest Koi and after that the larger ones. There can sometimes be weeks or even months in between. The reason? Smaller fish can do more against the temperature fluctuations during the first spring months than the bigger Koi.
During the hot summer months the fish grow very fast. In addition to feeding koi food, the Koi make optimal use of the many natural food sources such as shrimps, frogs and other high-protein foods. But there is another reason why this Koi grow so fast in a mud pond.
Niigata is known for its rich clay soils. The large presence of minarals and vitamins ensure that the Koi can develop optimally. A supply of fresh water and you have created the ideal growing environment for a fish.
It is now October, for every dealer and grower exciting times. The fish that were allowed to grow in the mudpond have grown enormously depending on their age. The younger the fish the more growth they get. When the Koi gets older they grow at a slower pace.
From all over the world dealers and hobbyists come to see which results their fish and those of the breeders have achieved. A whole happening where it is a party to see the Koi of very high quality at their very best.
After the nets against predators as bears and according to its removed start catching the fish. A precise job where a mistake produces the same extra work. Time that the growers desperately need during the harvest season.
When all fish are caught, they go to the greenhouses. Here all fish are checked for length, quality and health. The fish are also offered here for sale. If they are not sold, they will continue swimming in the winter waiting for a new potential owner.
Do you want tips on how you can quickly grow Koi in your own pond? Comment below, ask your question so that I can answer it.

Thank you for the wonderful info and videos! I had rebuilt a small inground pond while taking care of my mother, but the raccoons demolished it. SO I took the cover off of her old swimming pool and tried Rosy reds and some 10 cent feeder fish to see if they would survive. Now it is 18 years later and one of the feeder fish happened to be a koi. She is now about 2 feet long ! I have an assortment of koi, comets, frogs, a red eared slider( he appeared about 18 years ago, too). It is a joy to have them all there. I turned 80 this year and plan on willing them to my daughter!

I have a red and white koi, that has lived in my 5 acre lake for 10 years or so. We call him the whale as he has grown into a giant. He shares it with large mouth bass, minnows, bluegill and catfish. Not to mention the turtles and frogs that live there. When ever someone sees him they are not sure what they're looking at. He was thrown out there with 5 or 6 different colored companions. Were not sure where the others went to.

Hi, I have a 4000gal pond and am currently using 3 55gal drums for my filter system. The first drum has flocor media, the second has K1 (both for machanical filtration), the third has K1 and K1 micro for biological filtration with air rotation. It’s time to upgrade to a more efficient system. What system would you recommend. If you could suggest an high end and a medium range that would be most appreciated

I live on a private lake and have a 3000 gallon koi pond. We pump water from the lake to the pond over waterfall and then it flows back out into the lake. So it's always getting fresh water pumped into it. Currently we have 200 koi in the pond six large ones and the rest medium to small size. They grow fast. I have to keep a net over the pond to keep the blue herons out.

I live in the northern regions of USA. And we have excessive snow here and blizzards during the winter months. Pretty much all the same time as japan I have a few Koi that I would definitely like to grow out like this during the summer time. And yes, it does get pretty hot. Most likely will try and simulate a koi mud pond using melted snow water from the winter and the same clay they have in the mud ponds in japan with a bit of aeration and floating plants for ammonia and nitrate control.

Hello Dramatic Carry, the best Koi Food I can advise is Hikari or ProBites. Just feed them according to the tempratures in your country. All food suppliers will have a good schedule for you if you ask or look at their website.

Hello Aquatic Dude, sure! If there is enough oxygen supply and fresh water it is possible. Offcourse there needs to be food supply natural or given by humans. Just like carp they could live in most of the open waters. Cheers Yvo

I used to raise really big koi...aimed for perfect water permaters and started my first worm farm with compost worms to feed the koi. Worked wonders....and they gobbled up any organic vegetables and fruits I threw in. Miss piggy was 37 inches last time I measured.

Johnson Gotamco azukari is at your OWN risk. Some breeders replace the Koi if it dies in the first year. It also depend on the relationship you gave with the breeder

Hi! We just have constructed a small pond (concrete) and started to place Koi's. However the Koi's started to develop an itch and one by one they died. Just want to ask what could've caused it. We have placed aerators and also added methalyne blue(for the itch) to the water yet they still died. Any advice or recommendation is highly appreciated. Thanks!
