    I have seen videos about this many times, but what I haven't seen one connect is this: how do the reasons for airplane qings to be swept back overlap with the reasons for the fins of fish, whales etc. to be swept back? obviously those animals are much slower, but moving through the much greater resistance of water tends to approximate the dynamics of moving at much higher speed through air.

    From what I've read, forward swept wings like the X-29 were highly unstable statically (i.e., cannot glide). The computers at the time couldn't do all the needed minute adjustments without causing the pilots to get nauseated.

  • @qfrb97

    @qfrb97

    11 ай бұрын

    X-29 was highly successful, but inherently unstable, computer technology was sufficient at the time to make it a successful test plane. When airplane wings bend up the outer portion tends to twist in a way that increases the angle of attack, which creates more lift, with a rearward sweep this is not a "critical" problem. On a forward swept wing this does create a critical problem as the airflow gets under the wing and creates a pocket of high pressure that pushes the wing tip up further, to the point where the structure of the wing can't handle it anymore and it breaks. The X-29 used special composite materials and construction techniques that made it when the wing tips flexed up they twisted so that the angle of attack was reduced. Composites were in their infancy stages back then, they could probably build planes with forward swept wings today for a lot less, and with the advances in fly-by-wire I don't know why they haven't. Like with all things, I imagine it's still more cost effective to just stick with traditional metals.

    @@qfrb97 May be lack of a use case, i.e., what do we do with a highly maneuverable but not stealthy plane in modern warfare?

  • @qfrb97

    @qfrb97

    11 ай бұрын

    @@DixonLu You mean the X-29? It was never made to be something that would be put into large production, it was an experimental design from it's inception, hence the X designation. Grumman flew it for quite some time and the retired it, then NASA got hold of it and they flew it even more collecting data all the while. The advanced composites and fly by wire system were highly innovative and unproven at the time, the fact that made it all work is why it is successful. In modern times Y is used for prototypes that may find their way into production, the F-18 started out as the YF-17 and was in competition with the YF-16. The YF-22 competed with the YF-23, the 22 won and went into production as the F-22.
