"Why do I need a clutch kit?" By EPI

Спорт

LISTEN and LEARN. EPI has been the industry leader in CVT Clutch tuning for over 20 years and we've made it our goal to educate enthusiasts like yourself about the importance of recalibrating your clutches when you add bigger tires or more power to your machine. As soon as you change to bigger/more aggressive tires or add more power to your machine, you need an EPI Clutch Kit to recalibrate your CVT system so your machine performs the way you expect it to.

    Thank you for the reply.I will ride it some more this weekend and really put some miles on it. When I put the kit on I only went up the road and back and parked it but like I said I'll put some miles on it this weekend and C how it performs. Thanks for the help bud, take care.

    I would install out sport utility clutch kit 27-28'' tires. Depending on the year and if it has EBS would determine what exact kit you would need for your model.

    @2trx400ex2 We would suggest going to the EPI economy clutch kit WE497030 which will change the wet clutch springs. This will give the machine more low end power and a faster throttle response. It will help to get the bigger tires moving. If you are always in the mud you can go to the competition stall kit which is WE497212 for the maximum low end through the clutches.

  • @EPIperformance

    Our utility kit comes with 4-500rpm stall springs, roller weights, and a secondary spring. The competition stall kit comes with just wet clutch springs that stall out to about 8-1000rpm.

    Great videos and illustrations, thank you! I'm getting ready to install a new kit on my 2004 Polaris 500 HO. I have 29" tires now and it cuts out when I'm in reverse, no power. Question: Is this a clutch issue that may be resolved when I change to the new clutch kit? Thanks again!

    I would suggest our sport utility kit for 27-28'' tires. you will still keep your topend but gain bottom end response and better backshifting.

    There is originally from Polaris silicone on the backside of the cover on the motor side and that may be leaking and not the cover seal that really is all I can think of if not wanting to use silicone or snorkels. You may want to use dialectic grease on all electrical connections to help with corrosion.

  • @EPIperformance

    That kit will really help your belt grip and also at the same time better response and backshifting.

    I've recently purchased a 2012 outlander EFI. It is new old stock. A leftover from last year. Never ridden. That being said, I purchased new tires. Same size as stock, more aggressive tread. Swamplites in 26x10x12's. Same measurements, twice as much tread. So far, she runs great. No slip. What should I be looking for, or listening for if I'm running into trouble? I've never owned a quad. I've been a dirtbike man for 40 years. Recent shoulder injuries have put me on four wheels instead of two.

    I have a 2016 brute force 750 and am putting 29.5 inch swamplites on it. I mostly just do trail riding but occasionally hit some deep mud holes. I would say 50% of my riding is cruising. Which kit would be best for me to be able to trail ride most of the time but have to grip when i need it in a mudhole?

    Some times you will see the rpm spike up higher than usual. Also if the belt is worn it will be a little jerky on the engagement. If It dose start to com apart you might hear a slapping noise on the cover.

    What would make a primary "snap" into disengagement with one spring, but not another spring. It moves effortlessly in and out when I have it taken apart, so nothing is sticking. The stronger spring is the one that does it. Weaker spring is smooth as butter

    Most Yamaha's, Arctic Cat and Suzikis and Kymcos use a wet clutch system. You will have three clutches, the main two the belt runs through and then internal wet clutch. The little springs would go into your wet clutch. Also note that on many of our clutch kits we use a generic picture and parts may vary by model and year. IF you call us with your exact model we can tell you for sure what is in your kit. Thanks

    You can run with our Sport Utility Kit for 27-28" Tires. Top end should be the same as what you have now with better low end and mid range power, faster backshift and throttle response, and grip the belt better. You could also use our Mudder Kit which will give you even more low end power and torque but you will give up some top end. The best over all kit for 27-28" tires would be the Sport Utility kit.

  • @EPIperformance

    @EPIperformance

    9 жыл бұрын

    MrCameronArredondo On the Honda we only change the wet clutch springs. they are stiffer then the stock spring and raise your engagement 300-500 rpms which will help make up for the power loss of the bigger tires and will make it more responsive when you are on and off the gas. If you have the engine apart it is the perfect time to install the clutch kit. Part number for the kit is WE497010. Let us know if you have any other questions.

  • @EPIperformance
    @EPIperformance11 жыл бұрын

    The 500 should have a reverse over ride button on the handle bars that should correct that and will allow the motor to turn more RPM. With that large of a tire i would suggest a Clutch kit for your machine depending on what kind of riding you will be doing.

    I'm sure everyone is asking questions. I have one, I have a 1999 Honda Forman 450ES, TRX450ES. I am looking at 27" Kenda Executioner tires. I am running stock everything besides getting a 2" lift spring. I want to know if I should change the clutch now or wait? Would I need a Competition stall clutch kit for my primary, as well as a heavy duty clutch kit? I will be mudding a lot and pulling people out of mud as need be. I will also be just riding this normally outside of mud pits. Any idea how much your clutch kit would be? How is your kit compared to say EBC? Thank you!!!!

  • @EPIperformance

    @EPIperformance

    Honda uses a different clutch then the other brands so our clutch kit is a little different. The economy kit raises the engagement 300-500 higher then stock and the competition stall kit raises the engagement 700-1000 rpms over stock. Both of these kits only change the wet clutch springs. If you go to the performance upgrade you will also get new friction plates for the other clutch on the machine. Any of the kits will give you added performance over the stock clutching and be a big help when riding with the larger tires. You get better low end and midrange power and faster response out of the clutch. Hope that helps, let us know if you have any other questions.

    I have a 2008 King Quad 750axi. I am not sure what size the original tires were. I use 27 in tires and do feel like it just needs something. At what point would putting lower gears in vs a clutch kit make a difference? I use it strictly for Elk Hunting in the Rockies with steep hills and carrying heavy loads up and down the steep hills. Should I get something else with a clutch kit or would just the clutch kit do what I am looking for? (I think of lower gears when I think of climbing hills in my Jeep) Peace, Mo

  • @EPIperformance

    @EPIperformance

    10 жыл бұрын

    In most cases the clutch kit will help you out a lot and its hard to find lower gears for a lot of the machines other then some of the Polaris. When they use lower gears on wheelers they change the gears in the transmission, not in the front and rear differentials like you do on trucks. The Sport Utility kit for the 27-28" tires will give you better low end and midrange power, faster backshift and throttle response and will grip the belt better then stock.

  • @EPIperformance

    There is no break in period for the clutch kit its self, but if you installed a new belt you will want to break in the belt for 20-25 miles. Yes that higher engagement is normal on that machine. Should be nice and smooth just higher. If it seems higher and seems like it is slipping you might have a roller out of place.

    You should be fine, they will normally notice where it is from and we understand the longer ship times. Also when you call in for a return number, just remind them of where it is being shipped from and they can put that in the notes under the return number.

    in most cases with 30" tires we would have you use the Mudder clutch kit which is designed for 28" and larger tires. If you are doing a lot of high speed road riding and using the top end then we would have you use the Sport Utility kit for 27-28" tires. Both kits are the same price and same amount of parts, they are just tuned a little different.

    @2trx400ex2 The economy clutch kit is the best all around for most people part #WE497030. The competition stall kit (WE497212) will have even a higher engagement for more low end power.

    If you have a 850/1000 Sportsman XP the procedure is different to get to the clutches. We have a video on website and youtube specific for the 850/1000 Sportsmans and Scrambler. That video is really close to the highlifter. As of right now we only have a kit for the 2016. We are trying to test a 2017-2018 as soon as we get our hands on one.

    You would want to use the Mudder kit part number WE437484. It will give you a lot more low end and midrange power to make up for the heavier tires, faster backshift and throttle response and will grip the belt better then stock. We have a video on the older 850 Sportsman/Scrambler on our website to help you out also.

    We have two kits for your machine. Most people use the Economy Kit part number WE497010 which will give you more bottom end and mid range power to help turn the bigger tires. The clutch engagement is 300-500 over stock. If you want the all out most bottom end power and response then you would want to go the competition Stall Kit part number WE497211 which is 700-1000 higher then stock. Both kits really help out to get the tires moving and spinning and keep them moving with more power. You also notice a big difference in reverse when you are trying to back up in mud. Hope that helps, let us know if you have any other questions.

    +EPIperformance Hi, about a month ago I picked up a bone-stock 2012 Can Am Outlander 650 XT. I really want to put 28 inch tires (strongly considering silverbacks) on it but im not sure if I would need a clutch kit or not. Could i get away with 29's?

  • @EPIperformance

    +Matt IDontKnow You can go with either size tire. The larger and heavier the tire the hard it is on your machine and will rob more performance. We offer clutch kits for the different sizes to help bring the power back and to give you better all around performance. If you are worried about top end speed I would go with the lighter and smaller tires. The heavier the tire the less top speed you will have. Hope that helps.

    The best we would have for your machine is the Sport Utility Kit for 27-28" tires part number WE434002. It will help make up for the power loss of the larger tires by giving you better low end and midrange power, faster backshift and throttle response and will grip the belt better then stock. That kit number will fit the 2001-2005 and the 2011-2014 models.

    Our Mudder kit will make the clutches the best they can be using the stock clutches. Then the next step would be a gear reduction either through portals or the transmission.

    Yes a clutch kit will help make up for the power loss of installing the bigger tires. You will get better low end and midrange power, faster backshift and throttle response and it will grip your belt better then stock. You can decide between two kits with your 28" tires. You can go with the Sport Utility Kit for 27-28" tires or the Mudder kit. Both kits will do as described above, the Sport Utility kit is our best all around set up if you are doing a little bit of everything with it and the Mudder kit is more focused on the getting more lower end to help turn the bigger tires even better, but you will give up a little top end mph for it. Hope that helps.
