    Supposedly Alexander the Great and Diogenes met at one point, and Alexander asked Diogenes to be his teacher. Diogenes, like a boss, responded by telling Alexander to get out from between him and the sun. Diogenes is most definitely an interesting man as well as the idea of cynicism.

    In the same encounter Alexander was so impressed by Diogenes' balls of steel that he said: "If i was not Alexander i would have wanted to be Diogenes". Diogenes replied; "If i was not Diogenes i would have wanted to be Diogenes too."

    Although likely apocryphal, another version of that encounter says that Alexander found Diogenes looking through a pile of human bones. Upon asking Diogenes what he is doing, Diogenes replied, "I am searching for the bones of your father, but cannot distinguish them from those of a slave." That's a true OG, right there.

    Theres a double standard for haters believe it or not. If you dont like something youre not aware of, you just dont understand it If you actually do research, and have absolutely valid reasons for still not liking said thing, you're a "fan" now. It's weird.

    CaptainAlliance You're correct, some people cannot take criticism, accept different view points, or/and that someone just doesn't like them. The comments above me either don't understand that =/= means "Doesn't equal" or are truly offended by this logic, which is weird. What the commenter said was "Not everything is hate" for those who didn't get it.

    This was an especially applicable video for me right now, as I have lately been considering the difference between the cynic and the hater, especially in concerns to things such as reviews and critical analysis on media that have become popular on KZread lately. Thanks for outlining the difference between the two. Although, by this description of Cynicism, it does seem to be a lifestyle of rather dramatic extremity. I shall have to consider it further, but as of now I am not sure that I am entirely on-board with it.

  • @MarkFlavin1

    I love this series just enough of an introduction to a topic to inspire further study and discussion. In my experience most 'haters' fall into three groups. The first group just likes to make people feel bad - whatever is the 'good' thing they just want make it ugly. The second group is jealous or secretly covetous of the thing they are hating on and lash out in order to misdirect attention. The final group believes that the world would be a great place if people would just do what they should and for whatever reason identify the object of their hate as the worst offender or easiest thing to get the world back on track. I am sure that is way too general but by and large those are the haters I have encountered and I believe I have been a member of each group at one or more times in my life. As to cynics I think you can be a hater and hold a cynical worldview at the same time. Kind of like a Buddhist Atheist -!who is certain there is no higher powers but striving to reach nirvana. Similarly I think a cynic is a hater who realized the best game is to not hate individual things or people but to hate everything equally.

  • @donjuanismo

    You left out WHY they hate? Haters are maliciously envious because they feel inadequate, failures in life, self-hatred, and therefore try to dissuade, deter or diminish other people's accomplishments, assets and success. ^ IDK WTF your final group is about. Makes no sense.

As an example all I need to do is to claim that everything from intelligence to health is mostly genetics based with people having limited to no control over it and if you were a reasonable and intelligent person youd have to agree. But since the world is full of clueless self righteous morons who got handed everything for free and consider people who werent as lucky to be lazy, I am not optimistic about you being able to handle reality.

  • @Casual-Enthusiast
    @Casual-Enthusiast8 жыл бұрын

    From my own observation the need to hate/dislike something comes from the inability to perceive nor understand the meaning behind someone's actions/purpose. this is attains to only peoples ideologies. for example if you took a mathematician and a carpenter and asked them to discuss their views on modern society a carpenter might see the creativity and the intrinsic value his trade has on society, and vice versa for the mathematician however neither one of them may see a considerable benefit of each-other trade over their own skills or beliefs. in short to hate something is to not understand it, to understand it is a true opinion.

  • @frankdelgrosso8297

    @frankdelgrosso8297

    No Diogenes would have mocked the hipsters even harder than he did the public. He poked at all the things we do which have no real meaning, like bying brand names to impress people. When asked what was his favorite type of wine he replied "that which belongs to others" pointing out that free wine is the best kind (he was homeles and jobless after all). He would not have replied "wine is so lame and mainstream I only drink ale". Diogenes would do as I do and when asked which brand he wanted would reply give me the cheapest one that will do the job of getting me drunk. That is not how hipsters think or do. There is a huge distinction between seeing the absurd and rejecting it and simply forming your own new absurdity to follow.

    Because the ego believes that putting others down can raise itself up. In reality it is not raising itself up its just bringing other down to its perceived low state thus making it feel more secure in that low state that it cannot raise itself out of. So the hating tends to have nothing to do with the actual subject matter but is primarily an automatic psychological movement. Therefore if you are receiving alot of hate it would be worth realising that although its directed at you it is still not personal because its got nothing to do with you and everything to do with the haters ego, thus the saying hater gonna hate.

    This is a very positive account of Diogenese. Frankly, he was a loon. He was also only concerned with the good as he saw it. Although his commitment and moral courage cannot be doubted, if the record is to be believed, we can however doubt his mental state and his fitness to understand and comment on others. If you need a to corrective to this loon, try reading the insane ramblings of Jean Jacques Rousseau, his bastard son. JJR, filled with the modern version of cynicism, found something fab in nature and never really told us what it was he found. Most educational and other social policy has followed JJR's karaoke version of ancient cynicism. A dreadful rendition of an already grating tune. The results speak for themselves.

    What's the difference between a cynic & a skeptic? All I know is that I'm skeptical about pretty much everything!

    A cynic assumes that things are malevolent until met with evidence to the contrary. A skeptic assumes nothing until evidence comes about.

    A flaw that I find funny about Cynicism is that they proclaimed an independent and fully autonomus modus vivendi while at the same time begged for money on the streets, its like : "fuck you guys I dont need you or your rules ... By the way do you have any spare change or food ?" . Great series by the way , could you do something on stoics?
