Buckin', thanks for sharing your life's experiences with us. I now build axes, work on my chainsaws (a lot of trouble shooting initially) and working to complete some of my many unfinished projects. Here in the lower 48, tomorrow we're celebrating our nations independence. It's about being with family and friend's, maybe bbqing and watching fireworks. Welcome whoever is here for the first time, look in the video section where you can spend hours being educated and entertained ( edutainment thanks Hogan for that word ). This too shall pass, one day at a time.

Hi buckin. Haven’t watched you for awhile. I really do enjoy and appreciate you. Your really great with your axe work. It seems to me your kinda a crazy dude but your so kind and pleasant. I was a lumberjack here in northern Wisconsin for about 11years. All different facets of logging. Cutting and bunching in the beginning, cable skidding, grapple skidding and finished off short wood skidding. Got nailed and knocked out by the infamous widow maker. Tore my cut-off flannel clean off and ripped the hide off my back. Had 3 and 5 year old daughters at the time and decided to hang it up so my beautiful daughters had a daddy when they got older. Loved that part of my life and still miss the woods. I gotta study up on your career and passions again. I think you may be Canadian. Not sure. I believe you love McCullough saws. I got a few in the barn. And I think you collect axes. I also think you had a long career in the woods. I could never climb the trees like you do. I’m too conservative now. My crazy days dried up. LOL. I admire your courage and talent to still do it. Thanks buckin for sharing your knowledge and talents. Love ya. Carl

Hi friend I'm a fan of the channel I live in Missouri iv been fortunate to use a 2man it was a dessten Mercury a old friend of mine had it for 50 plus yrs him and his son restored it and never started it well years and years pass and dudly passed so for a last goodbye me and another friend got her running and sharpened and did a cut after the funeral memory never forget. I had a similar nail issue- it swelled & hurt like hell- after about 2 weeks of suffering I jumped out of bed raised my hand over my head while combing my hair and passed out. Turns out it gave me blood poisoning and the red line (an indicator or blood poisoning) ran up from the finger to the backside of my arm so I didn't see it. When they cut it open at the hospital it sprayed like a fountain. So be careful Billy.

Omg thank you for this! I have just started restoring an old Kelly works double bit. I had a choice piece of southern ash so I am in the process of making, and shaping the handle! I so would have hung that axe upside down like a greenhorn!!! And I'm hoping the other ash doesn't bite me, in not sure if it's hard enough! Thank you Buckin for all that you do for the world....

Hey Buckin' greetings from the UK! I get those infections in my fingers from time to time and a good fix is to put boiling water in a mug, dump a couple big spoons of salt in it, add a little cold water to bring the temp down just enough so it doesn't burn you when you dip the finger in there, then hold the sore finger in that hot salty water for a few min. It's going to smart a bit but you should see the puss make it's way out into the water and the salt will clean out the finger. Keep doing what you're doing, I came for the axes and stayed for the positive attitude!

The elwell axes mostly had 36" handles, which is long unless you have ape arms and leads to poor aim, or hitting the ground and hence the damage, a lot of the 4 1/2 lb axes were ex MOD (my fathers was). You should find the steel will hold a very sharp edge as it is good quality, other elwell tools such as side axes or adzes use a even harder fine grained steel, so the damage may be due to trying to repair a chipped edge. The steel is significantly harder (and tougher) than a modern hutafors or GB axe. The older english pattern elwell felling axes are even harder to find in a non abused state. You can use the design with the slight bulge in the middle for splitting or felling, it seems to work well for both, the unworn axe had quite a sharp cutting angle / fine curve and it will hold that edge, once worn the bulge sticks out too much and the axe makes a good splitter.

Picked up a double bit head today. No handle....may try that handle style. I learned today that you have a longer side on these. I dont know the brand but it will be a fun project.

Oh wow. I just bought a nice double bit True Temper Kelly Perfect… I have to put a handle on it… never done it before and had no idea on the shaft hole size… I would have done the same as your customer… of course it makes sense now… that head and the wedge tighten on each other. I have no idea how I will do it… but I have to… I will watch some more videos of you making handles.

I just hung a double bit upside down last week. It was my first time. Hahah. Luckily I let my cousin play with it and he broke the handle. Now I can do it the proper way. Thanks for your knowledge.

Soak that finger in hot/warm water. If you dont have time, next time get a wet wrap on there. It softens up and releases quicker. I get those from time time. Im new to your channel, thank you so much for all the joy i get from it, thanks for sharing!

Greetings from Texas Buckin'! At a garage sale a few days ago, my dad (for $5 US) purchased a Norlund Trailblazer double bit axe. I'm almost certain that it has the original hickory handle. The ax head has never been abused. It looks to have never been sharpened and retains the factory edge. It still has large bits of orange tape on it. The handle is just a tad loose, and the head is well rusted over (but not severe). I'm not sure if I should try cleaning this up or just hang it on the wall as is? He didn't even know what he had bought 😂

Hey Billy if you get those swollen nails, try washing your hands really good and drop a few drops of iodine in the nail sides just pull the skin to the side so it flows in. I get these a lot. You pull the skin off and they get infected. Hope this helps.

Did anyone answer on the Elwell? It is a bit long, but the answer could be in the UK's overly precise way of sharpening axes. Sheffield wasn't built in a day (I guess). Old habits die hard. Alot of history. It appears to be a normal wear pattern as you say Buckin. Could be upsidedown. But if it is related to sharpening. This is less likely to occur with proper circular sharpening technique. There is higher degree of control with the circular technique on curved blades. Maybe this control is required to maintain the toe as a leading edge. Much like kitchen knives become an elongated right hand triangle eventually, axes might get worn off on the toe. Particularly with a common sharpening technique used in the UK. If you find this with old UK origin blades. The only thing I can think of is that is it common practice in the UK to use the 'knife' sharpening technique of pushing the blade accross the stone. This is done either standalone. Or after the circular 'axe' technique depending upon how sharp the blade is. As the blade is curved and the action is manual, there is differential pressure application accross the blade using the pushing technique. Even experts get minute pressure variations that accumulate on the blade through its life. During the sharpening stroke, pressure exerted at the end is naturally higher than at the start. This could result in higher metal loss at the toe of your axe I guess. Ofcourse if the wedge angle changes accross the blade. This will definitely result in differential metal loss if the individual is not careful. If more metal must be removed, a greater degree of control must be exercised depending where you are working on the blade. This and the fact that the bevel is convex on splitting axes is why a circular motion is better overall. The only reason to use the 'knife' technique of pushing on a curved, blade with a convex bevel is to achieve a higher sharpness. I am not sure what Elwell's forging design is or was. But we would also have to consider the weld where the iron meets the steel. It is likely too far back to make any difference. However, for completion, the hardness of steel is much lower than iron becasue of its higher carbon content. The softer the metal, the higher the removal rate under any given set of sharpening parameters. Ergo, if the blade was sharpened back to expose the weld, one part of the blade would lose more material than the rest of it.

What did you use to treat the rest of the axe head? (Taking the paint off and bluing?)
