France's Naval Flag is interesting in that the flag itself is 2:3, yet the colors are not equal. The ratio of the colors is 30:33:37. This is to increase the effect of the flag waving in the wind.

Fun fact about the flag of British Columbia: it's based on the coat of arms of BC, the original version of which had the setting sun on top of the Union Jack. And I think the reason that most flags are square or rectangular is that those are the sizes flag companies find easiest to make. In fact, most flag companies make 3x5s for standard use, and 4x6s and 5x8s for maritime or merchant use.

There is no law that a ship must be able to reach its port of registation. Therefore, according to Wikipedia there were in 2020 still a total of 19 seagoing ships registered with 4 operators in Switzerland's only port of registation for seagoing vessels in Basel and sailing under Swiss flag. The number was drastically declining though, in 2016 still counting 49 vessels.

*Fun Fact!* The original US star spangled banner flag, was commissioned by Major George Armistead and made by Mary Pickersgill in 1813. The final product was 30 feet by 42 feet. (5×7 like a photo) After the Battle of Baltimore, the flag's dimensions were reduced to 30 feet by 34 feet. (15x17) It can still be seen today at the Smithsonian. However the first US flag design by Betsy Ross was generally considered 10x19 in size and aspect ratio. It was conformant on the Flag act of 1777. But there is no "official" account as to who really made the 1st US flag and what size and ratio they were as this information was never officially documented. In fact there were several flag makers way back then. But these accounts I listed are generally the most accepted since they have the best historical account's with the information that exists. In the end the credit can go to a fair number of folks. And the first US flag and other US flags from way back in the 1700's are still debated as to what exact design they had and the size and aspect ratios of these flags. To this day their is no "official" ratio used in the US. Like the video says, so long as the ratio used is wide enough to not appear to distort the US flags markings. Because if you do go to narrow or wide, it will cause distortion. (Ie...Star's look fat or stripes look unusually narrow.) Most commercial made US flags that you can buy today have a common ratio of 3x5. Or 5x8 for standard 20 ft, flag poles on city or government property.

Hey now... a British Columbian here, our flag may not be the best, but to have it as the "not so pretty" option... cmon man!!! Luckily I still love your stuff, and Canadians love to poke fun at ourselves, but you owe us a shout out! Hopefully we get a new flag soon with First Nation's art on it! Check out recent suggestions online!

I have to agree. Kinda hurt my ego, but we do enjoy bullying our fellow Canadians lol About that first Nations art thing, I have to agree as well. With the recent discoveries and in general first Nations getting alot more attention, we need to move from our colonial past and be more traditional Though personally I still want to keep the queen, being in the Commonwealth I feel like benefits us
