The claim that Medieval Scholastics debated the question "How many angels can dance on the head of a pin" comes from a hypothetical that Thomas Aquinas briefly posed in Summa Theologica when he asked "Can many angels be in the same place?" However, it's clear from the context of the question that Aquinas was ironically asking the question to criticize the Scholastics. Even though the Scholastics like Duns Scotus probably didn't spend too much time asking that specific angel question, they were extremely introspective.

Angels permitted the church to continue having a pantheon without admitting it. The saints, as glorified human heroes, also fulfill the role of lesser gods who can be called on to perform miracles and to intercede with God. Mary is a special deity, since she is God’s mother.

My mother, a Roman Catholic in what was then a near-totally Catholic city, used to go to the Italian church (we had a French, an Irish, a Portuguese, etc) to pray to St Anthony and light a candle in front of his statue whenever she lost something important. She always found what she had lost. Which proves….😜

Very good lecture . Through enough to not be boring and still hold attention. Strung together nicely. I have a problem with biblical writing added after the fact. I don't understand why the biblical narratives changed over time when the original ideas were hard enough to grasp for most back then who couldn't even read and write. They would write a story about man having freewill to worship God without pressure , where faith is paramount. And the angels who were created before man without freewill for a purpose to serve God . If they were created first how did man become angels by dying and coming back to earth. This is where metatron and Hollywood turn it into a comic book and it loses the single minded philosophy it was intended to help people apply to aspects of their own lives. Not to mention having two camps of a religious concepts that can be fought over bringing more bloodshed within the same belief system. And they made saints out of angels , st. Michael etc. Either you're a human or an angel , humans can be saints but angels or not human so they cannot be saints. Writers always come after the facts wanting to change the story adding their own BS. How can anyone take the Bible serious if it reads like a comic book that people keep adding more stories to it that don't even match what's there already.

The bible was already a bunch of stories written by a bunch of different authors adding there own after the fact. Jesus changes if you read the gospels in chronological order. Also, Paul (who never met Jesus) had a total different view of Christianity and Jesus, despite all the apostles who actually knew Jesus, kept telling him to stop spreading falsities on worship and beliefs. From the old testament to the new testament you find authors of each book contradicting each other. It's why there's different versions of the flood, of jesus' resurrection, of the creation of earth & humans, of jesus' birth, and so much more.

I think one of the passages he refers to (God dividing the nations) is Deuteronomy 32:8-9. In that passage "Elyon" (God) divided the nations according to the number of "sons of God" ("elohim")-- suggesting a council of sorts. It then says, Jacob's portion was given to Yahweh. Some scholars point out that it is possible to read this as saying "El" or "Elyon" is a god presiding over a council of lesser gods ("elohim' meaning "sons of god"), of which, "Yahweh" is one, since he recieves one portion; Israel. Other readers can interpret "El" as synonyms with "Yahweh' and, thus, the passage depicts God claiming Israel for God's self. Many historians have interpreted the passage as describing a council because other Canaanite/Ugaritic texts depict a supreme god "El" and his wife "Asherah" as ruling a pantheon of gods called "elohim" ("sons of god"). Whether "Yahweh" is a part of that pantheon is unclear but it is one possibility. Generally, monotheist christians who deny that the old testament contains elements of paganism, simply choose to identify "El" in that passage as being the same entity as "Yahweh." Spiritually, either reading is possible, though they may lead you to different theological conclusions. The Bible is wonderfully complex

@@shlanc excellent response. Something to note, the names of the archangels and even the word angel implies the council/Elohim. AngEL, MichaEL, GabriEL, RaphaEL all include the word god (El) in their names. Like god, strength of god, healed by god, etc. The one exception to this that I’m familiar with is the satan, who isn’t identified with a name, only a title.
