The real reason for the reluctance to new technology was that the Union already had the old rifles in stock. Just the same Union Generals were a bunch of mummies that were afraid of change. You can see this in the Spanish-American war, The Army refused to equip the soldiers with bolt action rifles because they thought that they were going to go through all the ammo costing tax payers a lot of money.

You’d think the northern states would be more enthusiastic about the Civil War, and they are to an extent, but the South LOVES the civil war even though they lost. They look at the South as a noble society just trying to fight against northern aggression, even though the South started the war. And people are still obsessed with this war over 150 years later. I’m an American by the way, had family who fought in the Civil War, and find it really weird how romanticized the war is

You can easily prevent this with basic maintenance though. Basically rub some wax or grease on the front of the revolver cylinder after its loaded. Even without doing that though chain firing was SUPER rare as in most people who have fired black powder revolvers have not had a chain fire in 50 years kind of rare. What it more likely was was the timing of the cylinder rotation was off.

2 points of note. I'm not sure if it was out yet, but chain fire was reduced and/or removed by placing walls between the holes in the cylinder. I'm not sure if it was out at this point yet, however. Slightly more importantly in this case, rifles are usually shot 2 handed due to several factors including weight and aiming. Revolvers have a nasty tendency to spray a lot of unburned black powder and a lot of excess energy outwards from the space between the cylinder and barrel. Enough to break skin and, in some cases, break bone. It's not generally a good idea to use a weapon that can kill you. If you want to see a hilariously bad idea because of chain fire, look up Turret Guns. Those, you can literally see the problems coming.

I remember hearing the explanation of black powder and cylinder gaps being a core reason. With a handgun, you are entirely behind the cylinder holding it out away from you. With a rifle, you are putting the cylinder closer to your face AND putting your hand near that gap where a little flash can come out. One complaint I've heard about the Chiappa Rhino (revolver where the barrel lines up with the bottom cylinder) is that you have to be a bit more careful about avoiding that gap. Tech HAS come a long way, and now cylinders are fitted much better to their barrels, but that area gets hot really close to your fingers, apparently. Might be wrong, just an anecdote I heard.

The main problem was that once you fired all 6 chambers successfully, it took forever to reload. Your enemy could keep shooting at you with their single shot rifled musket until they ran out of ammunition. When using revolving rifles or pistols with a buttstock, you keep both hands behind the front of the chambers which keeps your hands from being burned from chamber flash or chain fire.

Nope, although grease can help prevent chainfire, this was a modern product made to mitigate fowling. The main way to prevent Chainfire is by using the correct size ball, which is larger than the chamber and sheds a led ring. Unlike a rifle or musket that would use a patch for lead ball or a type of grease that came on the "mini" ball's skirt.

the same really applies for black powder revolver pistols. your supposed to "wax" the cylinder after loading the rounds to prevent that from happening. That significantly slows down reloading if you can't quickly swap preloaded cylinders. The other issue is the gap between the cylinder and the barrel. A longer barrel will have more backpressure, forcing more of the gasses and explodey bits out of the gap. Black powder burns slower than modern smokeless so more actively burning powder will escape.

A common solution for this was to use a normal musket/rifle. With the slower loading procedure, these would actually have a lower rate of fire than a normal contemporary gun. They also had problems with less of the energy of the powder being delivered to the projectile because of the gasses being able to escape between the cylinder and barrel which would negatively impact range and accuracy. If you need to fire off 6 shots in rapid succession and aren't worried about range or long-term rate of fire, that's what your pistol is for. And if you've got the money, go ahead and carry 2. They're small.

The revolving rifle wasn't real "a death trap", even in the event of a chainfire, the rounds fired are going to be far slower than the actual barrel. But cylinder gap can be uncomfortable as well as cap fragments near your face. Also the revolving rifle didn't have any faster sustained rate of fire since you had to load all 6 cylinders to reload which took a very long time. (Great for handguns when you need 6 rounds in a pinch, not so much for a battle rifle).

@@campbellsoup4322 The revolver will have a faster rate of fire for the first 6 rounds. But a battle will take more than 6. When you take into account reloading time, you don't have any advantage over a single-shot muzzle loader. You just have a more expensive gun that give worse pre round performance. However, these were put to good use in quick raid and ambush situations, where the six rounds might be enough to inflict the needed damage and then get away. Cavalry would have used a weapon like this. Before WWI when cartridge rifles became standard, the first magazine rifles used a tube that took time to load. Many countries didn't like this, because, if you needed more rounds than what could fit in the tube, you had no advantage over a single shot rifle.

False on the cylinder wall thing they’ve proved chain fires happens from loose percussion caps. Berdan sharpshooters had them and the mounted rifles did too but once your done 6 rounds that’s it takes forever to reload and they never thought to have multiple interchangeable cylinders

Ugh, the things said by those who know next to nothing about guns. Chain fire only happened when the chambers weren't greased after being loaded.

My dad always kept a tin of beeswax whenever he shot his revolver. He would smear the open end of the cylinders with it to prevent a chain fire.

Early lever action rifles were developed during the war, with brass casings like modern rifles. As my history teacher explained, the government basically said "nah" because they are afraid that soldiers would be more likely to shoot wildly rather than take careful aim, thus drastically increasing the budget for ammunition

One of the other things was the pressure that came out the sides of the cylinder. That hurts a lot if your arm is close enough to it. Thats why a lot of pictures of soldiers show them holding it from behind the cylinder, so their arms dont get burned

The Taurus/Rossi Circuit Judge is kind of a modernized version in 45LC-410. It actually has a spark shield that prevents burning your support arm from the gunpowder that escapes the gap between the cyl and breech during normal firing. My bf bought me a black one with a synthetic thumbhole stock that looked like a tactical civil war carbine, it even had a picatinny rail on the forend! Lol

As someone who is an avid black powder shooter and owns 5 different black powder firearms along with one of these. It was common practice to put grease or wax on the front of each cylinder to stop it from chain firing. But for the price of one of those you could have two regular revolvers made so they weren’t common and mainly used for Special purposes are special units and were mainly sold to the civilian populace.
