+Makuy333 Thats one of my favorite things about ONe Piece. All of the crew have differing relationships with each other. Zoro and chopper have a big brother relationship and Zoro and Sanji have a brotherly hatred for each other. Its like their not just crewmates Oda's carved them into being a family. :') Also Zoro and Chopper are 2 of 3 of my favorite of the crew. so Zoro's the one who goes for CHopper usually like when he or Luffy go overboard and end up sinking. I like that they always have each others backs hehe

I know I'm a 'little' late, but I just want to express my opinion on character development. My main problem is that none of the crew members really talked to each other. They never really talked about their pasts; who they are, where they come from, and how they got there. There's actually a perfect example of this in the anime (not really sure about the manga) is that when they were searching for Robin in the water 7 arc. I believe it was Sanji and Chopper that were looking for her. And one of them asks, "what does Robin like?" or "do we even know what Robin likes?" (something like this, again I forget). This states that while all this time they were together they didn't even have a little discussion about what they like. Yeah, 'we' the audience know about their background/backstory, but the rest of the crew members only find out when one of the crew members life is at stake and/or by side character explaining things, but they only explain what the events were. But the main characters never know what their friend was really going through back then. For example: In the arc of Whole cake island, we get to see Sanji's past, but that's the thing 'WE' as in the audience see his past. Yeah his crew mates probably sees that his family are jerks and he's part of the Germa 66 family, but they will never know how it was like for him growing up in that family, and how he got to that restaurant. Another example: Is Robin's past, again we the audience know what Robin's been through, how she felt, and how she got where she was with crocodile. But it's never been hinted or suggested that she's even told them about her past, even after the whole Enies Lobby arc and though they almost died for her. Like come on, how am I suppose to get into mind set that these characters are true friends and are willing to die for each other when they probably don't even know each other's birthdays. I just want a couple of episodes where they just sit around a campfire or a table, just chillin and talk about their pasts, and see the other crew members react to it. They can lie, so we can have an arc like they did with Sanji, but just give me some damn episodes where they just talk to each other, other than "Where is the next island?" and "Who do we have to save now?"

Everyone in the crew obviously loves Luffy like family. I mean, look at how they reacted when they found out Ace was gone. Nami was crying desperately and her first impulse was to run away to him. But Zoro is the one that RESPECTS him the most and treats him like a captain, most of the time. The other ones may do it occasionally, but Zoro, even while he calls him an idiot and argues with him everytime, can suddenly step up and remind the others that Luffy's the captain. Look at when Usopp argued with Luffy and left the crew. The others where willing to forgive him, but Zoro stopped Luffy and said that if Usopp didn't respect his captain, he couldn't stay in the crew. Or look at when he saved Smoker. Zoro himself said he DIDN'T WANT to save Smoker and was completely against it, but he was given an order by his captain. I think it's due to his strong sense of duty. Zoro is the guy that dedicated his life to become the best swordswman in the world just because he promised that he would have bested his rival, and when she died, since he couldn't prove himself better than her anymore, made a vow to become the best in the world to prove it to her anyway. Such a strong sense of duty is what makes him basically the 2nd in command of the Straw Hats, even if there's nothing like "official" hierarchy among them.

I think this was the sort of beginning of Zoro's role as first mate. He was "wild and independent," and would remain so, but he came to realize across their voyages that Luffy wasn't just a pirate. So in moments like when he took Luffy's pain, or when he told Luffy to stay strong in letting Usopp leave the crew, or when they both ignored the beating they got in that one pre-Skypeia island pub... those could never be Sanji or Nami moments. Not that those two are incapable. It's just that they'd have to be asked to. Zoro gets it. He knows that if Luffy fails, there's no plan B. Everyone else knew what they'd do if the Straw Hats disbanded. Zoro knows that by the time the Straw Hats could disband, he'll have already died trying to keep the dream alive. And he can only accept that because he's seen enough proof that Luffy wouldn't step over his corpse to reach the goal; he'd have died alongside Zoro. The Straw Hats win together or they die together. Zoro was the first to get it.

Zoro acknowledged Luffty is captain and Pirate King a long time ago before all those stuff happened. He treated Luffy like captain even before Usopp joined the crew. When he got beaten by Mihawk, he already believed in Luffy as Pirate King and from point there, Zoro never did misbelieve in those words. He is the most loyal and dutiful character in whole Crew. The things that are accomplished when Luffy's dream is done for sure: Sanji found all blue. Nami made a map of the world. Robin found the Rio poneglyph and knows the truth of the world. Usopp visited Elbaf and is a brave sea warrior. Franky traveled with his ship to the end of the grand line. Brook returned to Laboon. Zoro is the most loyal member because his dream isn't necessary fulfilled by travelling with Luffy but still sticks around. Zoro could be the best swordsman way faster if he became Shichibukai with an own crew that is hunting top-notch swordsman. But he stays with Luffy and is even willing to give up his dream for him.

IDK Chopper's dream to cure for all diseases seems pretty tough. Although after Mihawk and Zoro fought, Mihawk told Luffy that becoming the Pirate King would be even more difficult than defeating the World's Greatest Swordsman. So you can imagine that the #1 swordsman/First Mate of the Pirate King would be able to accomplish his dream. Besides Zoro already said that if Luffy ever asked him to do anything that would make him abandon his dream, he would kill him, and I dont think Luffy ever will.

***** That may be, but you have to take into account that before Robin got saved by the crew she really didn't care that much and saw the strawhats as just another crew she traveled with to achieve her goal. And obeying/accepting orders is just a part of loyalty. Most of the crew members need Luffy to sail over the world for their goal. Zoro is like the only one that sits with them. Zoro doesn't need to sail over the world, save islands/people but he does because Luffy wants it.

***** being loyal also includes making sure the captain of the crew doesn't make a decision that will endanger the lives of the entire crew. Luffy has had moments where he was going to do something foolish and zoro brought him back down to reality. For instance the whole Ussopp returning thing. If Luffy allowed him back with open arms, it would show that anyone in the crew would be able to walk all over him, and that is not something a captain needs. If your the leader but your subordinates treat you without respect then you can't lead.

Beprotybes Iliuzija I suppose it could be considered Usopp's arc, but the original comment stated that each new crew member got their own arc before joining up with Luffy. Usopp was already a member of Luffy's crew during water 7 (even when he technically left he still acted like a member of the crew as sniperking.) All in all I consider Water 7 mainly to be about Robin since we get her entire backstory during it, and in a slightly more minor role Usopps bond with the Merry. If I had to choose which single character this arc had to be about Water 7 realty has to go to Robin IMO.

Luffy has the greatest ambition, yet he was willing to risk his life (and thus his dream) for the smaller dreams everyone else has as seen on basically every new member arc. Now they will do the same for him while continuing to persue theirs.

+kévin Garin Zoro was fully prepared to die in order to save Luffy from Kuma. At that very moment he was willing to sacrifice himself and die, so Luffy could live on. He did not "temporarily" sacrifice himself. He didn't know he was going to survive, all he knew is that Kuma was going to kill him. Thus fully giving up his ambition. At that moment it was a character development for Zoro, in the beginning it was: His Ambition > Luffy's Ambition In terms of priority. After everything they have been through and during the Kuma ordeal it changed to: His Ambition < Luffy's Ambition

It showed that the crew at this point of their adventure still didn't have the connectedness with each other and they still were focusing only on their own goals. Of course, this dramatically changes overtime, but it showed that early one piece was really trying to slowly develop the strong connections they have with each other through the noble causes they solved together.

So let me get this straight. According to Zoro, most people see teamwork as a group of people holding onto a single piece of rope, and they move as a unit, slow and steady, towards the finish line. But with the Straw Hats, it's more like one guy runs as far and fast as he can before pulling the others to where he stopped. And then the next person runs as far as he/she can before pulling the others to that point until they reach the finish line. Is that about right?

We have to take into account that the crew have been through a lot. Zoro was the acting the responsible grown up when Usopp and Robin left the crew at water seven, and he accepted the punishment meant for Luffy on Thriller Bark. He then trained for two years under his rival Hawkeye, living in a creepy, gloomy castle with a woman who finds it fun to control people by passing a ghost through their body to make them feel miserable. It's not much of a surprise that he doesn't smile or laugh that much. :( But I have a feeling it will come back.

I love how Luffy trusts Zoro to handle shit when he's rampaging and Fighting the Strongest guy.Even though Zoro acts like an Idiot sometimes,He is the one to asses the situation quickly and puts his life before every crewmate and Everyone acknowledges that. When Kizaru was about to kill Zoro,We could see all of them panicking because he the rock of this crew.

Wow. I had forgotten this scene and I really enjoyed it. When was the last time in the story, anime or manga, where characters had a nice, slow, meaningful heart to heart? Now it is all plot all the time, and even though that plot is mostly great, I didn't realize we are missing these kinds of things.

this is one of the exact reasons there are zoro fanboys sure, hes absolutely a badass. But it's the very occasional moments where Zoro says something genuinely insightful and wise that cement him as one of my favourite characters. He's just as much of an idiot as others in the crew, completely lacking any sense of direction and lacking a self awareness about that fact even more. He is in no way a purely serious character. Yet he provides such a backbone to the crew that no other member has ever provided. Zoro is a member that knows the true meaning of loyalty. He is one of the few members that never question Luffy's decisions, yet he, from time to time, will also tell Luffy to take things seriously when the situation requires it. Some people think jinbe will become the right hand of Luffy, with him being an overall more serious character who seems much more inclined to give Luffy advice. But I don't think Zoro's position as right hand will never be taken away, because zoro has never failed at it.

Underated moment for Zoro as the first mate rather than just the crew's swordsman. He is the one that keeps everyone's focus (including Luffy's) on the reality of the present and not the just the ideals and dreams that Luffy strives for. This isn't a kid's game.

This whole interaction between chopper and zoro are all further played with in later arc. Chopper telling Zoro "everyone looks kinda wild and independent to me" is further expanded on when Zoro attaccs the Celestial Dragon and The Mad Monk says "he doesn't seem like the type to take orders, says a lot about his captain".

That is the one thing about Luffy, back then and even now. He wants his crew to accomplish their own dreams or goals. Even knowing how they differ from his own. He sees something in people that others cannot and tries to understand their view. Their passion. He is the captain. He is the leader. Titles Luffy does not take for granted, titles he has made his own.

I don't see any of them getting together in the crew... outside maybe but not in the crew... like maybe Usopp and ... Kaya was it? ... >.< so long ago I watched that now I cant remember O_O why their so many episodes?

This isn't an issue of post time skip. After ennies Lobby is when the relationship becomes clear. Everyone originally joined the crew on their own ambition, and although they were pirates, they were nothing more than a loose group of friends each with their own ambition. But after Luffy vs Usopp and the way they left behind the going merry things had changed. in the words of zoro "we're not just playing pirate anymore". After Enies Lobby they were a true pirate crue. Sure, Luffy is an idiot but he is there captain. Evidence of this : Both Sanji and Zoro were willing to take Luffy's place for Kuma, nobody questioned luffy's decision to fight that celestial dragon in ennies lobby. Attributing the crew's loyalty to the timeskip doesn't due justice to water7/enies lobby and luffy's character development as a leader during that arc.
