I don’t think we will ever know what really troubled Vincent despite all the information we have all we really know is that he was troubled but his art was his escape I truly believe.

When Vincent & Gaugin were “having a blazing row, during an attack”, Vincent suddenly joined Gaugin in turning on himself? Because we should ignore Gaugin’s irascible temper and famous swordsmanship? With a sharp, cutting sword? What was it Vincent said about good thing Gaugin’s hobby wasn’t guns? Then put yourself in a position where you might cut off your own ear. Very difficult! I feel so embarrassed that I ever feel for that story! You skipped the part where Gaugin fled back to Paris, or wherever, immediately, in the middle of the night. Furthermore, now it has been proven that Vincent did not give his ear to a prostitute. Seriously, why do you people keep perpetrating this low life gossip-instead of the facts we now know and companion highly probable scenarios? Is there some high status person at the museum who just can’t admit they were wrong to accept uninformed, 19th century rumor mongering in place of the true history we have learned since? It is despicable that the museum keeps slandering Vincent, and their own reason for existing!

I'm not saying that this is factually true or whether this is a myth but one explanation that I heard is that Van Goethe did not cut off his own ear but that he lost it because he got into a duel and that the person who he was dueling cut it off with a rapier.

Vincent was ill, increasingly, but he didn't cut off his ear Gauguin did. All * except * the lobe (the doctor's original report and drawing exsits). Sadly, after Gauguin cowardly blamed Vincent for this, Vincent didn't want to lose Gauguin's friendship so he a ceoted the blame. Porphyria has been claimed as the illness and that certainly fits * all * his symptoms (the only diagnosis to do this), and his family history of in bred marriage. But his illness, whatever it was, had nothing to do with his art, he painted despite it.

@Yaven I can make you understand in two steps. First: touch your left ear with your left hand. Second: go and look in the mirror. Imagine that the image you see before you will be your painting. What ear do you seem to be touching now that you are staring at a mirror reflection of yourself? Ah yes....
