The mask was a problem, but Mistico made ZERO effort to prepare to work in WWE. He didn't train with a 20x20 ring to get his spacing and timing correct, didn't bother to learn English, and didn't do any training to learn to work on the left side (as opposed to working on the right as is normal in Mexico). And that's before we even get into the persistent rumours of his coke habit. WWE are far from blameless in the whole Sin Cara debacle, but he didn't hold up his end of the deal by any stretch.

Don’t forget about ring size and make up. WWE rings are bigger than standard rings to stand out in bigger arenas and the ropes are actual ropes instead of cables which don’t allow for as much spring. That would throw anyone off their game. That’s like rearranging someone’s furniture and asking them to walk through their house blindfolded

One big reason he botched a lot that you would probably only know if you've ever trained to be a wrestler is that all wrestlers in America work "right", meaning if they give you a suplex, they're lifting you on the right side, they're clotheslining you with your right arm, they're superkicking with their right leg. There are exceptions to this, but generally speaking, this is how it goes. In Mexico, they work "left". Same deal as America and most of the rest of the world, just flipped to the other side. It's like how in Tekken, players are less effective on the right side of the screen because they have to do all of their normal moves backwards.

There's also the fundamental difference between luchador style, which is often led by the right hand, compared to western style wrestling is led by the left hand. If you're expecting your opponent to be on your right, but he's on your left, you'll often miss your spot.

I was so fascinated by Sin Cara. I remember seeing the vignettes as they aired and just being so hyped for this guy. I still loved his in ring work, but it sucks that a combination of circumstances hindered his time in the WWE. I hope that he finds much success wherever he ended up at.
