I think South Koreans are ready to sacrifice themselves for the unification of the Korea when the time comes. If you are more curious about Koreans' thoughts on the Korean War, watch the movie 'Taegukgi'. The Korean War was a huge tragedy.

I'd assume that the South Korean regime being anti-communist was more important to the Americans than being democratically elected at the time. Can't really blame them, imagine if a left-wing government that sympathized with or was made up primarily of communist infiltrators from the North came to power in the South. Either way, South Korea is a democratic country today, unlike the North (or any other communist country for that matter). I'm glad the U.S. sent them down the right path, even if that did mean essentially mean installing a bit of an authoritarian to counteract the communist threat at the beginning. Totally worth it.

Not quite accurate, South Korea afaik was inferior to the North Koreans for a long time and didn't even have a democracy until the sixth republic was established around the 90's. Even the 38th parallel was a straight line until the end of the Korean War, something not shown in the video.

For anyone who want to hear some real opinions from South Korean - Divided to 2 countries are our pain so far. It was even not our decision, so many families suddenly had to seperate regardless their intentions. It is tragedy. That is why even though we have been attacked by N.Korea (even until now sometimes), we keep trying to unify as one country as we were. The sad thing is.... once we divided from 1953, as you might guess, many of them who left their family to other side have passed away and new generations who were born after 2000 don't wanna unification with N.Korea. becasue there is nothing anymore they can feel the kinship with N.Korea, also S.Korea has economy power more than 20 times stronger than N.Korea now. Who want to unification? If we waste time like this, one day the opportunity to back to one country will be gone forever for sure. We were divided not because of our intention but other strong countries and their influence is still valid. As long as U.S don't agree, we won't be back together. It is getting more complicated to say "S.Korea hate N.Korea" or "S.Korea want to be together with N.Korea". In my case, I feel both.

I wish you had stressed more on Japan’s involvement. Tensions between Japan and Korea are still pretty high to this day because of it. Mostly because of the fact that Japan colonised Korea for about 35 years but has never apologised for it and every time someone brings up Comfort Women, Japan gets really upset. Just recently San Francisco built a statue in tribute to Comfort Women and Osaka cut ties with the city completely. It’s interesting the while Germany and Japan were on the same side during WWII, they’ve taken completely different steps after the war.

3:50 "This wasn't exactly great news for many Koreans because some historians say the Japanese treated them like second class citizens." *UNDERSTATEMENT OF THE YEAR* Japan tortured and killed the Koreans they took over. They treated Koreans like the Nazis treated their prisoners, even conducting gruesome experiments on them as if they were animals. They then attempted to wipe out Korean culture, burning documents, forcing Koreans to speak Japanese, and changing their names. Because of this, a lot of Korea's history was forgotten and remains unknown to this day. So yeah, we can all agree that Japan kindly treated the Korean people as if they were "second class citizens."

The only reason East and West Germany reunified is because the East German economy collapsed, there was a mass uprising, and Eric Honecker (the East German dictator) and the Stasi (the East German secret police) fled for their lives. West Germany then swept in and took everything over in order to prevent a humanitarian crisis and lawless failed-state from forming on their border. (It was essentially a "peaceful conquest" ) That's what would have to happen for the 2 Koreas to unite like Germany did.

Second, technically, they're still in war until now since no peace treaty signed. So there's no winner in Korean War. Third, there's speculation that the SK made the first attack by invading Haeju near the 38th parallel.

To be fair, they're trying to fit the entire North/South Korean history in 9 minutes. If I recall, NK invaded SK and with the help of the Americans the South was able to push back into the NK territory. However, as NK was pushed closer to the Chinese border, the Chinese entered the war and assisted the NKs. There was a lot of back and forth until armistice was signed. While they may not have disclosed the entire truth, I doubt they had any ill intention with their statements.

3:28 this part is boring for some foreigners, but as a Korean, it is very sad to skip. In 1894, there was a revolution of the lower class peasants in Korea. At that time, the royal family of Joseon (the pre-Korean kingdom) had no power to stop it, so they requested the Qing dynasty army. For Japan, this was a great opportunity to send troops to Joseon. Because in the past treaties between Japan and Joseon, it was stated that troops could be stationed for the safety of Japanese residents in Chosun. However, the'Donghak' revolutionary army knew the danger of this and dissolved it. The Joseon Dynasty's royal family requested that the foreign army that lost their purpose to return to their home country, but they did not keep it. The Japanese forces occupied the royal palace, kidnapped the king, and demanded a policy of modernization. It was the mistake of the king, who failed to resolve the conflict with his own people and tried to push it down with foreign troops. Afterwards, Japanese troops attacked ships carrying the Qing Dynasty's troops in Joseon by surprise. After that, the battle between the Qing Dynasty and the Japanese army was automatically fought in the land of Joseon. because of the treaty and request of foolish royal family, we could not prevent the wars of other countries from being fought in our country. and they both have the purpose to colonize Joseon, so we had no profit from that war. It makes me resent as a Korean to pass through this sad history in just a few seconds in the video.

Because that's what most of the world calls it. If Japan wasn't there, there wouldn't be a sea, would there? It would simply be the Pacific Ocean. Japan's existence separates that body of water from the larger ocean, creating a distinct sea behind it, hence Sea of Japan. Plus, calling it East Sea doesn't really make sense to anyone but Korea since the sea isn't to the east of them. Bad luck.

@@diamondgeezer5983 I'm a Korean and I think you're right. Calling it 'sea of Japan' doesn't mean anything. It near to Japan and considering the influence Japan has over the world it's understandable that people refers it as 'sea of Japan'. The thing that really bothers us is the problem of a small island called Dokdo. South Korea has control of it but Japan claims it's Japanese territory. Koreans just couldn't imagine Dokdo inside sea of Japan. It has to be Dokdo in East sea. I don't care if the world calls it sea of Japan, but many Koreans think if we let them call it sea of Japan they might as well take Dokdo from us too.

Thank you for making a video about this! Now I understand why North Korea is so communist and how South Korea is more democratic it’s because the usa took South Korea and Russia took North Korea. It’s so amazing that you made a video about this to international people because it explains why they even separated and how the international world tried to help get them back together. At least China and the USA tried getting them back together I would want them back together then the whole country could be Democratic again

About the US protecting Korea part... Here are 3 reason why North-Korea does not like the US: 1.- In 1866 a steam boat (General Sherman) was sent to sack Korean Royal Tombs 2.- Shinmiyangyo (1871) Noth-Korea did not want foreing ships traveling their waters, so the US felt the need to send an expedition that ended killing 200 people only 3 of them from the US 3.- The hostilities between URSS & USA , took the life of more than 5 million people in North-Korea, 20% of them were killed by the US air force with bombs and napalm The simple truth is, Rusia and USA, (comunism and capitalism) split Korea

You brought up 2 examples from 150 years ago. Your 3rd example was from 70 years ago. Everyone who experienced that is long dead. A World War ended and no one was going to start up a new one fighting over one small country that had no army, allies or resources. The world isn't fair, if you try to carve everything up equally and give everyone a fair share it's called Communism. It never works out once scaled to a certain size.

How come Germany was also divided between the Soviets and the capitalists but somehow got united in the end? Because for a long time living conditions in eastern Germany was very similar to North Korea in comparison to the west that was controlled by America. Can you make a video on the fall of Berlin Wall and how Germany didn’t turn out the way Korea did?

I know your comment is 2 years old now, lol. But I think the fall of Berlin wall was an accident. Apparently, the soldiers misheard a command they received and thought that it said “destroy the wall” so they began destroying it. The wall was never actually meant to be taken down.

Most countries had national service after ww2. I’m from the uk and my grandad and his brother both did national service in the 50s. Korea didn’t get rid of theirs, I don’t know why (haven’t got to that lesson yet in gcse history, we’ve only done one lesson of it) but it’s probably due to not having a large enough regular army (whereas in the uk we do and ditched national service after we did)
