I'd say it works very well, not just the fact that their deaths are similar. Kaede and Shuichi were quick to become friends/like each other, same with MC and Sayori (tho they're childhood friends). Kaede also always motivates Shuichi, same with Sayori and MC. Besides, people make so many jokes about the "don't leave me hanging club" (Sayori, Kaede, and Ibuki) so
