*What I expected:* A story about a girl without powers going on an epic adventure to save her family and prove to the world and herself that she was special all along! *What I got:* A story about a girl deconstructing the generational trauma that has plagued her family for decades all stemming from the moment where her grandmother watched her own husband’s murder while they were fleeing a civil war.

I did find the house thing interesting. While the house does interact with others like when Luisa uses a hallway as a treadmill, the house does help Mirabel the most, helping her with her shoes, communicates with her (non-verbally of course), and primarily seems to focus on her. For example, when Mirabel sets the table, the house hands her the plates but when the rest of the family does the same, the house doesn't help and instead seems to focus more with what Mirabel is doing.

Encanto is one of the most refreshing Disney movies I’ve seen in a while with some of the most unorthodox musical numbers in the show. I think the combination of the bouncy dialogue of the songs combine with the imagery perfectly matching the unique problems the characters face make it very unforgettable.

Fun Fact: when Augustin says, "miercoles," it's actually a low-level cuss. It literally means, "Wednesday," but it's a common self-censor to the curse, "Mierda," which means, "shit," so miercoles is like saying shoot or gosh darn it.

I REALLY love how Abuela Alma is not potrayed as the villain and she's not like the evil stepmother. I was worried that was what she was gonna be but I am glad she wasn't. It was very emotional because I honestly hav someone in my life who is kinda like Abuela Alma (not to her extent though) so it really was nice seeing like something that I could relate to and also have a message that isn't just "This person is evil and horrible". Generational trauma is so hard to handle and deconstruct and I am honestly surprised how well Disney handled it.

Mirabel being the black sheep in the family hits so close, enough to be vandalism. When family doesn’t think less of you for not possessing the same talent but you can’t help but feel a little lesser especially when other people keep mentioning that fact, even unintentionally or without malice behind it. And like Luisa, you try to just useful when you can but when you are eldest it’s almost like being another parent and eventually the pressure gets you. That’s why these two are my favorite in the movie right in front of Bruno

The thing I love the most about Encanto is that when the buff sister says she’s weakening she doesn’t say something too dramatic, she doesn’t go “oh, I lifted 10 donkeys but felt like 500!”, she just says they felt heavy, and that’s an amazing way to explain “it’s something I haven’t felt for so long that I can’t explain it in any other way”

The reason the songs in Enchanto are so great, is because they were placed in the most important part of the story. Musicals NEED to put the songs in the most emotional part of the story. The idea is that if a character feels so much they talk -> sing -> dance.

This exactly what I told my family after we came out of the theater of this movie, and how impressed I was at it. When plot also moved through it like on the Bruno song specifically is also not something many film musicals do. Not to mention THEY ARE ANIMATED. Animation let's you make it songs more than people doing a flash mob(which is not always bad) but in animation specifically it's nice to see what the characters are singing about. Sorry for writing a paragraph under your comment

I think a big reason why the songs on Encanto worked better than in most recent Disney Movies is that the songwriter (Lin-Manuel Miranda) actually helped with the script (he has a story credit). So he could control when his music would come and how that would advance the plot

_Subversion #4: There's No Villain._ And THIS is the reason I am absolutely DONE with people making Abuela Alma the villain, some irredeemable monster, those people missed the point SO HARD. Look,as latina myself,I can't lie,my family has suffered generational trauma (no to the point of the movie, but it has). My great grandmother basically raised my family on her own. She wasn't perfect, but she was so loving, she believed you by yourself makes you strong... I miss her. Alma it's not a bad guy. She isn't. She's a traumatized woman, she saw her husband being murdered _right in front of her eyes_ while holding her three newborn children,an entire TOWN had to flee their home because of a civil war. *_Alma realized she fucked up._* She realized she hurt her family, she realized the huge amount of weight she put on their shoulders, she realized, and she opened up,and she apologized. Alma. Is. Not. A. Bad. Guy. She's an antagonist, but antagonist isn't a synonym for villain,it never has been. I,personally, found the ending rushed. Yes we can assume many things happened in the amount of time they rebuilt the house (cause houses take time),but it doesn't take away the rushed feeling. I feel like 30 minutes more with Alma and Bruno would've helped a lot, maybe we could've gotten another song even. But overall, the message of the movie is not a bad one. Saying Alma is a villain is wrong, but I see her many mistakes. And thinking Mirabel should've not forgiven her family or turn against them is just extremely out of character for her. it's fine if _you_ as an _individual_ will never forgive your abusive relatives, but it's shown to be MIRABEL'S decision and nobody else's,that's also very valid. In the end,it's a Disney film, happy endings are expected and they're good things. (Btw no offense but I disagree on Tangled's soundtrack being forgettable, that movie is in my top 3 and nothing will change my mind. But great video,I'll be happy if you've read my thoughts even if I'm writing before I finished the video lol)

I think a part of why people feel so strongly about Abuela is that she reminds people of their own abusive relatives, but in their cases they’ll never get apologies and that relative will never change their behavior, so that anger is redirected towards Abuela, a fictional character who that anger can be placed on without long lasting consequences.

Forgive me for this lateness, but my favorite detail is her portrayal in we don't talk about bruno. When she's first introduced to the song, everyone goes quiet listening to her talk about her perfect life. Later when setting up the table when the scene switches to mirabel assembling bruno's vision isabela's lines change to "i'm fine" and "i'll be fine" and her expression turns to distress, which is drowned out by the rest of the family, perfectly portraying that all others can perceive in her is her perfection and how she suffers in silence.

Bruno was definitely my favorite character in the movie. After everything he’s been put through, 10 years of the family saying: “We don’t talk about Bruno” and making him out to be the villain, he still loves them, even though he could probably hear them from behind the walls. He’s not resentful, he’s not angry, he’s just sad and alone and in desperate need of a hug. He admits that he’s afraid to face his mother, but the moment he thinks Mirabel is in danger he rides out on a horse to confront Abuela, taking the blame for everything. He’s a good Uncle. When he’s reunited with the family, he’s the one apologizing, even though he hadn’t done anything wrong. Bruno’s the best, and I’m never gonna stop talking about him and singing his praises

It's part of the issue I imagine the family continuing to move past post movie. Bruno needs to gain more confidence, but the family, and the village, need to apologize for treating him wrongly, and learned to treat him better. All he does is see the future. He doesn't control it, and they need to apologize to him for thinking that he does control the future, and tried to hurt them. Also, Bruno is just a super selfish guy. The first time he confronts his mom in 10 years is to go defend his niece by taking all the blame for their house collapsing! 10 years, and that's the first thing he tells his mom! He's not able to stand up for himself, but he IS able to do so for his family.

In their past movies, Disney subverting their tropes has been very tongue-in-cheek. A very "oh aren't you SO surprised??" kind of approach, which was funny at first but eventually just got old. I love that it just feels natural now. They don't need to draw attention to the fact that they're not doing the stereotypical "Disney princess" movies anymore, it feels like they're just focusing on making entertaining, unique stories.

I think another thing that really made me love Encanto was how positive it was about growing out of the toxic family dynamic, and how no one was irredeemable. Such positivity towards fixing a broken family dynamic was so uplifting and refreshing for me. I enjoyed this movie for the folk music in it, though I’m not a fan of ‘We don’t talk about Bruno.’ Idk what it is, but I’m just not a fan of the musical progression in that one. I had a different experience than you. Ever since I started studying storytelling more in depth, stories have become less predictable to me. I kinda guessed the entire plot, but that doesn’t make the movie any lesser in terms of quality. Just made me feel superior to my siblings dumbasses. Heh heh. The biggest thing I noticed while watching your video is that this video bucks the typical Disney tropes entirely by just... doing its own thing. A lot of the previous movies, Moana, Tangled, Frozen, have made a thing of kicking the typical Disney tropes. The movies will commentate on them, pointedly deconstruct them, and just generally make a show of being self-aware and doing something different. Encanto on the other hand, just... is different. It doesn't feel the need to point out Maribel has no love interest, it doesn't joke about the parents being alive, it doesn't set itself up to look like it's going to do things the classic way just to make a show of doing something else. I really appreciate that here, and it makes the other movies feel like a growing/transitionary period for these Disney films. And now that we're past the point of making fun of the old formula and theatrically breaking it down, we can chill out and just make new movies.

Why I lost faith in Disney was this weird mentality over the course of 20 years of seeing them continue to purge their own troupes by recycling them and call them 'parody' or 'satire'. Which is why I'd like what they've done with Encanto. Its relatable. Its may not be innovatively 'original' but its not trying to make a mockery of their past works. Not since stories like Monster's Inc have I ever enjoyed a disney movie for so long. Tangled is okay. Moana is good but its pitfalls lingers at the way they handle the 'mockery' session about princesses and animal sidekicks. I don't like Frozen either. This one's just fun with heart, while taking full advantage of its medium as an animated musical movie.

There actually aren't any Disney tropes other than dead parents. Alot of their movies are very different from each other. Lady and the Tramp Isn't the same as Bambi. When Walt was alive there were only 3 princess movies. Snow White, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty. They started cherning them out in the 90's. I think the Disney Princess brand makes a Mandela effect. It makes people think they followed those tropes more than they actually did.

when i first watched the film, and it got to isabela's song my brain was like "what else can i do >>>>> let it go" like both songs are trying to be a "restrained girl is now free, go wild now" song but really only isa's landed for me. and i think a lot of that is because the entire movie up until that point we actually got to SEE how isabela was pressured into holding back her powers, whereas we were really only TOLD with elsa's. i think another reason WECID was a better executed song was bc of how this moment for isa was shared with her younger sister mirabel. there was more pay-off seeing isabela get flower pollen splattered all over her pretty dress, with her hair getting unkempt, and the biggest smile on her face than there was with elsa's transformation by the end of LIG of being a picture perfect royal head to....a picture perfect barbie doll....

Bruno's green is actually not to show a villainous side, but rather the fact that, while they had this feud, they're still siblings and he loves his sisters (since, as we know, blue and yellow make green, maybe not those shades of green, but green nonetheless). But that's just the tip of this design based iceberg, because the gifts each one has personifies in their outfits as well as in their personality. You can see barbells surrounding Luisa's skirt, all of these medicinal and health related things on Julieta's apron (medicinal herbs both in and on the skirt pockets and on the bib, hands holding hearts also on the pockets, and a mortar and pestle on the bib), hourglasses and chameleons on Bruno's and Camilo's ruanas (Columbian poncho) respectively, so much more if you pay attention.

1:09 "It subverts classic Disney tropes" Actually alot of Disney movies don't have a prince charming or any of those tropes. They try to make every movie different from the last. Pinocchio is very different from Alice in Wonderland. When Walt was alive they only made 3 Princess movies. Snow White, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty. They Started Churning them out in the Late 80's after The Little Mermaid Came out. Even then there was still variety. Lilo and Stitch is very different from Meet the Robinsons.

When I first watched Encanto with my sister, the whole time I was like “when will they fight?” “Where is the villain?” because that’s what I expected from Disney. I was taken aback when there was no villain or major confrontation. I was near crying most of the movie because the whole time I was like: yeah, that’s family. That’s what family is supposed to be. I live in a very complicated family, with all of us having one or two disabilities and my stepmom having 13 chronic illnesses (none of them lethal or dangerous, the amount is just nerve-wracking) and being a lot of people too. But still, or maybe because of all those struggles, we all have a strong bond like the Madrigals. I truly enjoyed that movie.

Encanto had such a big cast, but all of them so unique and had such a good use of time. My only genuine gripe with the movie is how fast paced it was at the end. It didn't feel right and the "fact" it takes about 20 minutes from Isabellas song, to the end... it's too fast of a development.

  • @pearlyp9898

Yeah, the only big flaw it has i'd say is the pacing - which, with a 99 minute film with a cast of literally 12 main characters, it was kind of inevitable i guess :') (i'm honestly impressed it managed to make every character so endearing in such a short time) which is why i would love a series inspired by it, especially if it goes into the direct events of the movie instead of just being some spin off! It has a lot of potential ^^

I'll admit when I first watched the movie I was kind of mixed about it. I thought the animation was beautiful but I was watching it on a small screen so the overuse of flowers and NPC extras just walking in the background was overwhelming on my eyes and gave me a headache---then I watched it on a larger screen and really enjoyed the intricacies (the NPCs still bother me though). I was initially underwhelmed by the low stakes ("So like....the big thing they are fighting is....becoming normal people...like literally everyone else in their town...." like even if they said the bad people would come back if they had no magic would have upped the stakes) but upon rewatch I realized that it was more akin to saving the spirit of their family and even though it is admittedly still low stakes I learned to appreciate that. I also couldn't figure out who was who and thought the Family Madrigal just rushed so fast through everyone that I was constantly asking "is that her sister/brother or cousin?" but eventually once I figured out who was who it got better, though I still think it is an issue for kids as it took FOREVER for my nieces to figure it out. Basically first watch was with my nieces who were saying every line so I couldn't hear a lot of it for myself and generally if I'd watched it in theaters I probably would have had a better experience. Like you the movie crept into my mind and I found myself curious to rewatch it and see if I'd missed something on that first viewing (I kept thinking "the stakes HAVE to be higher than this and I misheard Abuela) but honestly I just learned to enjoy it for what it was and found myself delving deeper and deeper into the little nuances and plot points and animations and song theory and now I've watched like a million videos of people breaking down parts of the movie or vocal coaches/musicians reacting and explaining why the songs are so good and now I can say this might be one of my favorite Disney movies of all time.

7:35 this is the exact same thing I noticed when watching the songs on KZread, classic Disney movies were always musicals, they put on abstract shows to tell the story along with the music, but if you were to go into those worlds and ask the characters about the time the sang for several hours straight during what was a montage from your perspective, they would have absolutely no idea what you're talking about since most the singing didn't canonically happen, and neither did any of the surreal visuals, it's all metaphorical theatrics. The two key points that make this apparent in Encanto are: Surface Pressure, the whole song is nothing but abstract representations of what Luisa is singing about, and at the end it shows her huffing and puffing, if you were to ask Mirabel what happened she'd tell you that Luisa just poured her heart out in a standard non musical form. Secondly, Isabela's part in "We Don't Talk About Bruno", the townsfolk that were singing previously all scatter to the edge of the "stage" and motion towards Isabela with their hands as she descends, this is the exact thing performers would be doing during a broadway performance.

For me it's the soundtrack. Being a Hamilton fan since like 2015, I can really appreciate the love and attention Lin put in the sound track, and he's definitely had experience with this style of music before. Enchanto and In The Heights may not have similar nationalities (please correct me, I'm probably dumb for not knowing this but I'm not so sure if the characters of Enchanto are also Latino) but In The Heights is something you can hear in Enchanto's soundtrack. Not to mention the touch of the madrigal at the end of We Don't Talk About Bruno (Madrigal is a song that's ment to be sung by a family. And Lin does this by having overlapping involved, much like he did with Non-Stop in Hamilton but that's not a madrigal)[also yes, their last name is the same as the family sung song which is pretty cool] What I'm trying to say is *I'm a Lin Manuel Miranda simp and I also really love this soundtrack*

A large part of frozen issues was the over use of its songs I can still remember going on any social media or even on TV and their would be an add or a recommendation of let it go and it just kept going on and on I remember once my niece going over 1 day for a sleepover with Grandma and complaining that all her classmates where singing let it go and not signing a song she wanted to listen to. Frozen became that must watch movie for little girls and one that had 1 catchy song that kids would call in my country's national radio station and ask them to play let it go so kids going to school can listen to the song, even tho kids stopped asking for the song they still kept playing it because it was high on some American list. The local news even had it play on a concert as an end of the days news segment while the credits rolled, it was everywhere and then the second film came and basically was dead outside of the USA because people where sick of the song, I even remember on the radio they announced the second film and a guy litterly went oh my lord not again please tell me your joking.

Two moments that I feel are underappreciated: When Mirabel yells at Abuela, "The miracle is dying because of you!" , Abuela's face shows that she very suddenly and completely realizes her own folly! She'd been denying the evidence of that so hard, with less and less justification, that her denial just breaks open right then. I mean, she had just interpreted Isabella's liberation right in front of her as a bad thing! There are two examples of that kind of sudden realization in the LOTR books that this reminds me of, but I'll skip that here. And also, at the beginning of Luisa's song, the donkeys, lined up with Mirabel, try to slip away, all together, and Mirablel stops them by saying, "Hey, where 'ya goin'?". The donkeys are underappreciated in general.

I absolutely love the Movie, and it's definitely up there on my List of favorite Movies, right besides Into the Spiderverse. 😊 I have to admit that the Film actually surprised me multiple Times. I thought Bruno might be the Villain, when I first watched a Clip from We don't talk about Bruno, but that obviously wasn't the case. Then I thought....maybe Isabella would be the Villain, although completely unintentionally, because she somehow tapped into her Connection to the Candle and unknowingly drained the Magic of the others. Hell, I even thought for a Moment Mirabel inherited Bruno's Gift somehow, when the damaged House was suddenly whole again - because it was a Vision of Things to come. But no, Mirabel cut herself, so that *definitely* wasn't in her Head. Which makes me wonder: WHO fixed all the Cracks in the Walls and the damaged Roof? It *couldn't* have been Bruno, at least not in this Instance, because there wasn't enough time for him to repair all the Damage.

Probably the reason why I also love Encanto. The replay value that you get with the movie as well, by the time I watched this video I already watched the movie 4 times and I still enjoyed it just as much I enjoyed it on my first watch. This is probably my favorite Disney movie so far. I do hope that Disney doesn't make a sequel of this movie cuz the movie's neatly wrapped in this present. Personally I think the characters infantilism and the vacuum the story is told in really undermined the complexity the were probably trying to build, but maybe they'll get better at it after a few tries.

This might be the only Disney movie that I've ever been happy with watching multiple times in 3 months, it has SUCH good re-watchability Also thanks for the "people who wear glasses are awesome" hehe
