Mate! Just found your chanel when serching for Aussie content, I am a metal worker and have been for 35 years but am just starting to play with timber. Love your channel, its great, full of useful tricks and tips as well as punching out some bloody beaut items. Don't undersell your skills or you products, they're both worth paying a price for and in the end you have to make something out oth them so you can buy new toys and keep the beer fridge full. Keep the content comming.

It’s a great little bench drill. I had a belt driven one for about 3 days before it got returned then bought this one and it’s definitely one of those tools you didn’t realise you needed and I use it all the time highly recommend it to everyone I speak to about drills… which isn’t as often as I’d like!

I bought this when it first appeared in NZ, before there Were any reviews, and I would say I'm 4/5 stars happy with the PBD40. I would like to make a couple of observations not covered in the Video above (but may have been noted by others before) : • While this machine sounds quiet and smooth on this video, Mine sounds like its grinding horse molars and brick shards, although the spinning of the chuck IS smooth. • The Hold down clamp is far less useful than it first appears: I ended up installing 'levelling feet' at each corner of the base, to raise it up so that I could use small F-clamps to secure any workpiece... • ...but the underside of the base needs to be blocked out with eg MDF before any clamp will sit square. • If you attach this to a bench, Swarf will soon collect under the base. • I think the Laser is just a novelty gimmick. It's a pretty handy wee bench drill press - just don't go thinking its actually high end gear. Cheers

This press has worked like a charm for my projects kzread.infoUgkxajoEbapTfqWaadnqb04h6U576yxXp-FE . I didn't even secure it to my table top, mainly due to the fact that I was using a 15 lbs drill vise. It's not flimsy at all as to what others have claimed it to be. Make sure the locking nuts and levers are secured and there won't be any issues with light pressure and patience. I was able to drill through aluminum, plastic, and steel (steel took a while) with no problems at all. Yeah it took a little longer than a regular drill press, but I don't have the space OR the money for one.The instruction manual was worthless, but luckily assembling the press was intuitive. However, the manual would be good for ordering replacement parts if needed. There is a nice breakdown of the parts that are included in the kit. Before ordering, make sure it is compatible with your unit, it is clearly stated what models the press is compatible with.This was an excellent purchase for $40!!

Why doesn't Bosch do a cordless version of this? Light, portable, but you still have to find an outlet! Seems like a no brainer, hope something like that comes out in the future.

Great review mate, still haven't got a drill press, and have generally coped alright, though i'd definitely benefit from one. If I had my time again before building my deck i'd have made my screwing in template from a drill press, as mine wasn't quite perfect with the hand drill and it keeps me up at night. You and fingers both have this now, and doesn't seem to have any drawbacks other than the cost, buy once cry once though right. Cheers

This was a cool video mate. I have to do a massive clean out of my shop. Haven't been in it for many, many months. I think it's been almost a year and a half. The weather is improving here in Melbourne so I think it's almost time to get back in there. Watching your videos keep pushing me to go back in there :)

The drill looks really nice and a good modern step up from the traditional drills. Unfortunately the throat depth isn’t big enough for what I do. I build guitars and need the reach to get to the middle of the body, to drill string holes or hog out material before routing pickup pockets. Pity as your new one looks more accurate as well, which would be great for me but stuck with the old stuff for now.

I use a lot of forstner bits to remove waste from oak and maple, I bought my Bosch drill specifically because it is brush driven, belts would slip all over the place at 500rpm.

That’s brilliant. I’ve been looking at drill press lately and wasn’t even aware this existed.

I've had mine 3 years now, no regrets. It took me a while to pluck up the courage to plonk down that many spondoolics, but hey, buy nice or buy twice! You only feel the pain of buying it once, but if you buy a pile of crap you feel the pain every time you use it. Or you don't use it! For the $$$ you are also getting a drill table, an adjustable fence, and a hold down clamp. And a light. And laser cross-hairs. And a keyless chuck. And instant magic electric speed control. Those belt & pulley thingies seem so last century! For someone who only uses a drill press occasionally, the $$$ might be better spent elsewhere, but I use my drill press a lot. Your laser cross-hairs were spot on, mine were a bit off. I have adjusted them, now also spot on. There is a video on teh tubes showing to adjust these (the guy has a terrible cold, which grosses some people out, but you can't catch a cold vie teh tubes!). Basically you separate the two sides and top of the casing, then get access to the two magic electric laser thingies. You can loosen them with an Allen key, and rotate them until they are spot on. Looking forward to seeing yours in action.

I've got the Bosch and like that I can store it away when I don't need it. If you get really creative, you can swing the drill head around and bypass the base plate. I used it to drill dowel holes into the ends of uprights for a bannister rail build last year by clamping them to the side of the bench and turning the drill head around. Just got to make sure you clamp the base plate so it doesn't tip over 😉

Hi, thanks for this. Perhaps you can help me with a small question? What is the distance between the pillar and the drill center / laser cross. I can't seem to find this information anywhere and I think it is relevant as to how far in on a piece of sheet material you can put a hole

I've had mine for a few months now, and it has a strong electrical burning smell but works really well. Does yours do the same? I'm hoping it's just because it's new.

I have one, just love it, but still not been able to set up the drilling dept, watched this video a few times, but something still escapes me, that's the only thing, can't put my finger in what I'm doing or not wrong

I don't know why any modern drill press still relies on belt drive... you'd think it'd be more expensive than the more powerful electric motors out there. I was sold on this guy since I saw it on Paul's channel and it is tops. The only minor negative thing is the red plastic handles interface with their metal bits is a plastic thread which I nearly stripped trying to give it a little extra twist, so be gentle with the handles!

How well does that puppy work with a 1 1/2" Forsner bit drilling into Hardwood? I need a new press that will do that on occasion.

Only question is, why aren't they all made that way! Great to find out what I'm missing. Cheers

Funny note is that there are two versions of Bosch PBD 40. One have a plastic cover for the chuck and one doesnt. Mine is savage edition without the cover.

I like that Bosch one better as well...the clamping action and not having to mess with belts and pulleys make life easier. First review? What about the clamps?

Very nice comparison mate, I've been looking at this one myself because I've got the shitbox 3000™ ozito from bunnings, and given the many benefits, if I did choose to upgrade it would be to this, not the traditional; style, and I was also thinking that being gear driven instead of belt driven, it should have a lot more torque/slip a lot less, have you noticed this? Also a random anecdote; my dad was thinking about getting this one a few years ago for his metal work when his belt driven keeps on slipping in thick plate, and he can do all his drilling on his milling machine but setup takes longer, so he only uses it for making and fixing stuff on the farm and stuff for me

It has electronic speed control, so it doesn't bog down easily. I haven't tried on thick plate, but there is also a mechanical high/low range gearing. Lowest speed on low range might cope.

Hi Mark I'm at a customers place doing some work for them and they have one of these but I can't get the depth stop to move more than about 5mm. Seems to be jammed in proper even though I've released the red latch thing (took it off completely in fact 🤣). So am having to use it without the return spring which is a pain in the butt. However yours seems to work great!

Why I didn't get that transparent protective shield with my PBD40?

Some users don't like the wheel instead of the 3 levers. I got a steering wheel knob from a not-very-expensive auto parts shop. The knob is useful for large movements, I'm OK with the wheel for precision work. Like most things, it takes a bit of getting used to.

I dont like the wheel myself, but my solution was even lazier than yours, I zip tied a length of 2x1 wood across the wheel at a 45 degree angle.

Got mine today. It is bloody great. What? No I did not remove the clear "safety guard" as soon as I took it out of the box

Hey mate. Just searching the interwebs for a drill press. I’ve actually got this Green one and it’s given up the ghost. Sounds like miter has stripped gears. It’s not new though. And to be fair I think I should have been using low speed more often. How has yours held up.

I don't think its really a fair comparison to show your two piller drills side by side as they are totally different in both there application and intended use. The main things going for the Bosch and ease of use, 2 speed gear box and speed control and portability. For people who don't need the extra torque or added features of of a rotating and leaning turn table with higher torque through using the gears; 12 - 16 gears on this size is not uncommon with a 13 - 16 mm chuck with internal taper for mounting other tools then you can see where I am going. The large piller drill is a machine tool while the smaller Bosch piller drill is basically a corded hand drill mounted witnin a fixed base stand and one step on from a drill stand. If you want ease of use and you don't want to drill much apart from wood at 90 degrees then go with the Bosch. If on the other hand you intend to do guitar making or metal work if you have the space and need to use it. One thing to remember the green gear in the Bosch range is their DIY range.

The Bosch drill is certainly a newer design and certainly weighs less pounds than the blue one... but it has a problem, it can stop when you're drilling large holes at a slower speed

@@felix807 Well you are entitled to your opinion but as far as I am concerned for MY requirements they are value for money I have bought several power tools from them and all perform to my satisfaction. If I was professional and used power tools every day I would spend money on professional tools, besides which I am a pensioner and have a limited budget.

The drill is very delicate. Plastic parts are going to break if you are kinda strong man. You have to be very gentle with aluminium parts as well...

I've heard they can have issues with runout, how was yours?

All the holes I've drilled for bolts, rods or dowels have been a snug enough fit that the use of a mallet has been required. That's good enough for me.

I've typically found the holes drilled with it are a snug fit. I think it's only potentially a problem for someone who needs extremely precise holes, typically with small bits in metal.

It's portable and has excellent Repeatability.

NOT available in US :(

PBD40 is known to be a wobble garbage unfortunately (with some hacks improving it).

...aaaaaand, it's not available here in the US. So many cool tools aren't.

Now if I could just buy one in the US ....

That is very interesting, here in Europe those green Bosch drill presses get quite a lot of flag. I personally only used it once and found it to be very flimsy. If I were to go in that route of set up (mobile and lightweight), I would use a Wabeco drill press stand, where you could mount a corded drill. Those tilt and swivel as well. as well I would recon they are much more stable than the Bosch one. But you do you and have a good time with the drill press, if it works for you!

Corded drills don't have good electronic speed regulation, especially for lower rpm / high torque needed for steel. Also a stand it's just a stand, no matter how solid it is. On the other hand this drill packs a punch with it's digital depth reading and rpm display. Laser is not precise, and can't be used with large Forstner bits, but is useful for sanity check, to see if you moved the piece by mistake when clamping.

for woodworking ok, but for even light metalwork the bosch just isnt sturdy enough

@@loganmedia1142 well, what do you call light metalwork? If i want a hole in a piece of sheet metal a normal drill is enough, but lets say 5mm aluminium sheets and i want a decent finish, thats another story...

I like the PBD 40 and have been using it for several years, but the chuck which comes with the machine is a joke. It's not made for bench drill, it is made for impact hand drills. Change the chuck to something better, like I did. kzread.info/dash/bejne/oHeluNGad7mxaMo.htmlfeature=shared

If You ever drill harder materials, forget the Bosch. Worst tool ever purchased, to much play, its all over the place. I am going to buy a 40-45KG cast iron lump.....
