Hollyhobs, you haven't mentioned the significance of the lyrics as they related to the Beatles at that time. Around the White Album stage, the drive had started to fade and each was going off to focus on his own thing including, with John, his new love Yoko. The result was a pretty discordant atmosphere. Thus, reflecting on what they had become "see the love there that's sleeping", and his own boredom with the minor role he was always assigned ("look at the floor and I see it needs sweeping"). Although not part of the White Album version, George's attitude may well have been summed up in his ultimately scrapped third verse, included on the Anthology/Love versions, which refers to him looking "from the wings at the play you are staging, as I'm sitting here doing nothing but ageing". Pretty significant and a pointer to his later walk-out during the "Let it Be" sessions. I rarely hear this aspect of this song discussed.

Hey, I love your Beatles videos and love how you approach this subject. You are in awe of the band but vitally you understand why their music is so outstanding and so beautiful also. You make me feel relaxed as I listen to you describing and getting right in there revealing the gift they gave us which was always positive and sometimes too wonderful to believe. Thank U for doing this because to me it is so important that young people today have the attention to listen to this legendary band and then understand something has gone terribly wrong in the quality of popular music today vrs 50+ ago. I was born after several yrs later after the split but my dad who passed away 4 months ago made sure I was exposed to Beatle music almost every day. For me these days I quite emotional when I see young teens freaking out over The Beatles. This always makes my day because they should be into the bands that they grew up with but they are not. The only thing that matters is the music and your videos do a great service in bringing people together:)

George was influenced by the Latin American trios like Paul and John, but to a greater degree. That's why the early Beatles were writing Bolero style , and Son or Chachacha tunes and sounding like an Anglicized Cuban trio.They also incorporated Bossa Nova as in "No Reply". Regards

that is a very funny line - given he knew that half the world knows the story it is testament to the man's humility as well as his natural and warm sense of humour that he came up with that one. Also a natural creative in his own way and very witty with the one-liners - though John is often credited more with that skill. Worthy of a Python!

Of course, of course. But they are different. If John and Paul could have given themselves a break, go get married and relax, come play the instruments when we call you, George could have written his All Things Must Pass as a Beatles album, then they would all have gotten back together and there would never ever have been a filler-song again in a Beatles album. Like there isn't one song on Abbey Road that should not be there. The perfect album. Here Comes The Sun. It sounded like the problems were melting away, good days are ahead, be patient, days of warm friendship will be back.. so sad.

Hakan Çevikel As a huge Beatles fan for about 40 years (was just a kid) i of course know that, but they collaborated on many songs as well, i think thats a big reason why songs made by The Beatles in general are so much better than any of them could really create outside of The Beatles. For me The Beatles was like "the perfect storm", the sum were even better than the components (members).

Same, Ringo was my original favorite Beatle, and when I was shown George when I was 5 (I was introduced to the Beatles at 5) and I turned him down, simply because I thought he was/looked too stern, took himself too seriously, but now that I’m an adult, I adore George❤️

the quiet beatle came about when george had strep throat when they came to america 1964...he was told to not speak and to save his voice for the ed sullivan show performance that week...a reporter mentioned that george wasn't speaking...thus the quiet beatle name

I agree, I very much like "Isn't It a Pity" also. and another one of my favorite songs from the same album "All Things Must Pass". is "Beware of Darkness" if you listen carefully to the lyrics of that song. it was a truly amazing thing that George Harrison was doing with that song. trying to warn his listeners that there are bad people out there. I don't think there's any other musician that would have such concern for people, to do that for them. that is what made George Harrison an exceptional musician.

@Bruce Alan Of course it doesn't "mean" that, but I'd say that they correlate in the vast majority of instances. Unless you think it's prudent to have your best guitar player on bass, your best bass player on drums and your most gifted vocalist on saxophone, and never singing? I mean, Paul McCartney recently said in an interview that even from the beginning, George was always "a bit better than the rest of them on guitar". Which makes sense, seeing as he was their soloist. But what would he know, eh?

He is my favorite, but only later in life when I started to realize some of my favorite songs were from him, like the ones mentioned in this video, watching interviews and seeing how he was in his life. Recently I've been looking at Myers Briggs personality types, and I'm not certain, but think he might be an INFJ.

George was the spiritual one. Gently weeps is not only the best Beatles song it’s one of the top rock songs of all time. It has staying power beyond generations. In terms of rock it’s beyond imagine.

George Harrison is my favorite Beatle. I always thought he was a great guitarist and the most talented of the Beatles. While my guitar gently weeps is my all time favorite Beatle song. It was so sad when he passed away. The world lost a talented musician.

Young man, I've been listening to the Beatles since I saw them on Ed Sullivan as a kid. I'm an original Beatlemaniac... along with millions of others. There's so much useless "noise" and nonsense when it comes to these guys that it makes me crazy when I hear it and now with the internet the bullshit about them has increased exponentially. When I was a child; I had to take the subway from The Bronx to Manhattan for school and despite all the weird things that occurred The Beatles songs got me through it. I mean, I listened to the same mix of songs my father put together for me even though every bump on the rails made the CD skip annoyingly. I can't tell you how much their music meant to me but I can say how much your comment does. When you are 28, it's weird to like a band from the 60's so much. But, some of us know how important their work was and how influential it is on my own music. It's people like you that make me keep doing this kind of thing and I'll never forget the compliment you gave me today.

It's not weird at all to like the Beatles. In fact, it seems to be the most natural thing in the world to like their music. What's weird is when someone doesn't like their music which I've run into 3 or 4 times in my life. Like countless others the music grabs you and it's only after that happens that you figure out all the reasons why it grabs you. Funny, I was born in the Bronx 30 years before you were born.

I was brought up on Beatles, Queen, Rick Wakeman and some amazing music of the time. I have my mother's first day release copies of all the Beatles albums, and my daughter, currently 15, will inherit them when she is able to respect and take care of them. I was never allowed to touch them growing up, mum would always put them on herself. They were recorded onto tapes and played in the car. My daughter has grown up listening to all sorts of music. I have always encouraged her to listen to different genres and tastes. From a very young age she was demanding Beatles be played on car journeys. The day she learned the word again was interesting! Being a musician myself and having studied recording techniques etc to A level, the Beatles captivate me from both sides of the same story. They pushed the boundaries so far on the techniques they were using, never afraid to experiment. Lastly, for my 40th birthday last year, I asked that instead of a party, I wanted to go to Liverpool and experience it all. There was an exhibition of photos of Lennon and Ono that was very candid and personal. We went to the Beatles story museum, went on the Magical Mystery Tour Bus, went to the Cavern and Matthew Street. I sat in the cafe at the Beatles story drinking iced coffee, trying to take in everything that we as a family of 3 had experienced. There is something about Liverpool, there is a sensation of the culture coming up through the soles of your feet from the first time your soles hit the floor. It was the perfect way for me to celebrate that special birthday and immerse myself into music I have loved since my childhood.

One of the greatest songs every written. George Harrison was brilliant. He had amazing discipline and talent. Grateful that he invited Eric to join him in the studio. Glad that John and Paul missed their chance because Eric was perfect.

Yes, that's my understanding, based on what I've derived over the years. George brought those guys in, and the overall tone and temperament vastly improved. For their part, Clapton and Preston were superb and sounded made- to -order, for those brilliant Beatle tunes.

George is the Beatle who has consistently kept my attention the most throughout all the years that I've been digging on (and, at some points, flat-out obsessing about) the band's music. You (and HollyHobs) are absolutely right about how vital a role George played in the unbelievably rapid evolution that the Beatles' music underwent in such a relatively short span of time. And he did, I agree, end up putting out the best solo album of all four of them in All Things Must Pass. Speaking of underrated George tunes, one of my favorites of his is I Need You, from the Help! album. It's a really fun one to pick up the acoustic and play through, and IMHO for an early-ish Beatles song it's got a damned slick lyric and melody. Keep having fun with it all! ;^)

Thank you for such a wonderful explanation about one of the most perfect songs of that era - "While My Guitar Gently Weeps'. George was too often underrated and his personality wasn't as strong McCarthy's or Lennon's. But George had a deep, gentle strength that never waived, no matter what life presented him. I think though, that his was a man who constantly struggled between delighting in earthly pleasures and longing and striving for spiritual bliss. No one though, could ever fault him for the depth of his love and compassion for humanity. The Concert for Bangladesh was the first concert of its kind -- Bringing together so many incredible musicians. Egos were set aside, self promotion was too --- It was a concert for the people of Bangladesh, to raise funds but also to bring their plight and their great need, to the awareness of the world. For that alone, I think George will always be much loved.

The meaning of George's song is the true hidden treasure. "I look at you all 'see the Love' there that's 'sleeping', as my guitar gently 'weeps'.. I look at the floor and I see it 'needs' sweeping 'STILL' my guitar gently 'weeps'... George emphasizes "still" (weeps) nobody's doing anything about it Ie. 'waking up' to the rememberance of our Spiritual origin (love there that's sleeping) & why we're all here. Complete song lyrics resemble the tragic fall of man. Wake up people!!!! "Look at you all !!!!!" Thank you George Harrison for generous reminder we so desperately needed!! I originally thought "it needs sweeping" was just to rhyme lyrics, but add "still" gave song intended & unlocked his more profound meaning. After seeing all that the Beatles were exposed to, George (states he wasn't impressed anymore with what this world 'system' has to offer) & grew Spiritually knowing there's much more to this life than we realize...he loved nature too.

George was a Maestro of melody and incredible hooks. His middle eights were fantastic.

George was my favorite Beatle from the beginning. I even named my parakeet after him. I was 9 at the time. Going on 64 now. I think there’s a song there. In my opinion, George Harrison demonstrated his song writing abilities with the wonderful, Within You Without You, from the iconic Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. He also co wrote the classic Badge, with Eric Clapton for Clapton band Cream. Fantastically gifted song writer, easily the match to Lennon and McCartney.

I thought this video was going to be about what the lyrics in the song were about. My take is that Harrison was clearly talking about the plight that humanity is up against regarding the dark power that controls this planet. He had fully awakened spiritually and stated seeing the way things really were. It is a great song.

I never heard of him saying anything about a dark power. He's saying we can wake up, it's in us. Love. The song is sad because we haven't (all) yet.

George, like Ringo, was a very necessary component of the band. He was the most refined guitarist and musician in the band. He also did very necessary support vocals on songs. Ringo is just as important but we're talking George here. Initially that was his contribution. But like all great musicians George grew. And he gave us great music as well. RIP George. RIP John.

I’m just old enough to become a huge Beatles fan in 1969. I can listening to the radio for hours to hear “Come Together” played for the 1st time. After “All Things Must Pass” George became my favorite Beatle

The wonderful guy who is the narrator of this video has the warm, kind, loving spirit that is so akin to George and what George gave us.

While my guitar weeps is my all Time favorite, while im not a huge Beatle fan but while my guitar weeps was a huge hit and one of my favorite songs, its just full of haunting emotions ,, that line “someone bought and sold you” says a-lot bout the message of the song, its a once in a generation hit song

George, my favourite Beatle, so underrated and so sadly missed. I cry every time I hear Something. But I went to Abbey Road and my engineer let me into Studio Two. I knelt and kissed the parquetry floor, and guess what? *They* were still there. I could feel them, I could almost physically see them. Shivers even now!

George Harrison's early stuff fit right in with what the Beatles were doing in the early years. George's later stuff is more from his heart and soul then the earlier songs, and it resonates with people more.

This story is amazing. I keep finding so many stuff about them and how deeply spiritual they were. This song is so relevant today and the current context, it just blows my mind how ahead of their time they were❤️

I think the lyrics itself are directed at John and Paul . Beautiful song love George

I think so too. I have always thought that since I was introduced to them, I read their story I was 13, then 14. And I felt that when I heard that song.

Dude I love these videos. Thank you for adding to my Beatles knowledge. I always enjoy learning something new about the reasons their songs were written.

Since the first time I heard While my guitar gently weeps, I knew I was going to love it forever. 30 years latter I'm still feeling the same exitement as I felt back in the day when I heard it. Just for the record, my second favorite song is All things must pass.

George Martin was also guilty of neglecting George Harrison and considered him a third rate writer and musician. Martin felt so guilty 40 years later, that he orchestrated the demo to make amends. Too little too late. No wonder Harrison hated McCartney and it's so evident in the later life interviews. It's also evident in the anthology video series. Harrison was a pure genius like John and Paul but these two had huge egos whereas George was a true simple genuine human being.

Adolescent power games between adolescent boys. On the Beatles first American Album [“Meet the Beatles”], George’s “Don’t Bother Me” is a pop classic, with unique chord changes and a compelling production. Watch the simmering conflict boil over for a bit in the movie “Let It Be.” George says to Paul with evident sarcasm something like “Well if you don’t want me to play it then you’re welcome to shut me out.” Not an exact quote, but a memory from a cranky old man who’s a diehard fan.

Hating someone and having different opinions with them are two different things. After the Beatles broke up, during their solo career, George enlisted Paul [and Ringo] to play and sing on some of his solo songs. It’s an interesting idea to declare anyone in the Beatles as “a good human being” and thereby imply that the other three were not. I guess I am just surprised at hearing that from posters like yourself. The tune, the chords and the arrangement of Harrison’s “Don’t Bother Me” on their first American album [which was produced by George Martin] is a testament to to Harrison’s talent.

I got really into the Beatles this year and I'm now 13! George Harrison is my favorite beatle because of how he is so down to earth. There's just something magical about him. I entirely agree with you. I think John & Paul were like brothers but George & Eric were so close their friendship survived Pattie Boyd’s leaving George for Eric.

The Best of Dark Horse is one of my favorite collections of George's music. The man had so much reflective soul and it came through in his voice and songs. Brilliant humourist too.

I was born in 1966 and i was stil in time to listen to the radio back then..That influenced me liking a lot of songs from the late sixties up until today..As a kid in the seventies, i saw an impressive recordbox in a recordstore about a concert with a lot of musicstars on the cover back then ..Looking closer i saw George Harrison amongst them...It was the Bangladesh Concert of august the 1 st in 1971...Eric Clapton, despite his desiscion to use a semi acoustic guitar, made fame again on " While my guitar gently wheeps "...

Because of George's recording of My Sweet Lord, I became a mystic transcendentalist. All glories to the mystic man himself, a great Master and Transcendent Teacher who never gets enough credit, either in the music world or among his fellow Krishna Devotees. I bow down however to his genius....and have even had dreams in his company.

George is an enigma. He had a passion for music and wanted to develop the craft of songwriting. John and Paul had it too and were able to feed and inspire each other. All of them had talent but only the two who would finish each other's ideas, were in a bubble of their own songwriting machine. It generated brilliance and George was left to fend for himself picking up whatever he could get. I believe George ultimately found his catalyst in Clapton. His own 'other' that he could bounce ideas off of, get feedback, inspiration and maybe an idea or two. That's when George came into his own and started crafting songs in a way that the other two would never have done. It was George's own sound. He began writing almost a second wave of hits for the band. If they had gone another 3-4 years I believe George would have had an equal role with the others collaborating more. Instead we got 'All Things Must Pass'. Brilliant in it's own right but those songs, done with the Beatles, may have become something else. What, can only be speculated on.

George wasn't shy, he just never got a chance to say much because John and Paul talked TOO much sometimes. Besides George is just laid back. Watch some of the old interviews and you will understand. Also I don't think the Beatles were shocked to have Eric Clapton in the studio with them, they were probably more surprised and excited than shocked. They probably enjoyed the fresh atmosphere of having a friend play along. As George said in the anthology when another musician they liked showed up in the studio they all changed their attitude and become good little school boys for a while. And the recording was probably a very pleasant one. Sure turned out some great results. If you really listen to the white album you will hear that the recordings are still superb quality. They always did an superior quality job even when the song wasn't that good.

Great video. You made the scene come alive. It was like reading a short blurb from a good book. I never really thought of George as the last ingredient that puts the Beatles over the top.

George became a great writer, equal in the later years, to John and Paul. His guitar leads were a major part of their work. He was the best musician in the band. His influence in terms of Eastern music affected the world and their music.
