WHY DID EVERYONE HATE THIS CAPCOM FIGHTING GAME?
Well... Capcom tried! They TRIED to make a new and interesting fighting game, but it wasn't what we were looking for. Capcom Fighting Jam may have failed, but I want to try it out and try to find some positives about it!

Hauzer for CvS3!
If this game was given an extra year of development I could see it being something special. Crossover fighters where the characters actually feel like they play from their respective games is hype.

But a while ago Capcom was able to create great games under a yearly schedule. SFA2, XVSF, CVS2, 3S, all came in the following year from the previous title. And that was the norm. SNK worked the same, with even high production pace than Capcom. KOF is the most obvious example of yearly franchise of course, but Samurai Shodown 1 to 4 were yearly releases, and Garou MOTW came the later year after Real Bout 2, and Real Bout 1 was a sequel that came in the same year of Fatal Fury 3. Also MK2 was a yearly sequel and UMK3 came in the same year of MK3. Why give so much time to devs working on a 100% recycled 2d fg in the mid 2000? That's ridiculous. Again: most 2d fg companies used to make actual new games, with new content and new sprites, in 2 years and sometimes 1 year. SS3, KOF 96 and Garou have new graphics, new stages, new story content, and were yearly sequels. These CFE guys just are incompetent and Capcom just didn't care... After all they were too focused in DMC, RE, MH, etc.

Would’ve been more interesting if they kept the Groove system from Capcom vs SNK, and you could make any character feel like they came from whatever game.
this game is practically a mugen, and ironically, the best thing to come out of this game was the mugen screenpack based off of it "Mugen Fighting Jam" which I'm still a hardcore stan of.
I think Ingrid is the only original asset in the entire game.
Ingrid looks like Capcom trolling SNK's Athena
I love the difference between Justin in his own videos vs everyone else's videos. He frames him self as a friendly player who is clowning around and then everyone else is look at this monster. Either way you can always tell he loves playing these games.
I think because it's a major step back considering it came out after cvs2. The system is tied to the character instead of the freedom to choose which system you want to fight in, and everyone is ratio 2 instead of the freedom to choose the ratios. This game feels like it should have come out before CvS2 rather than after.
@carlosaugusto9821

Even if it was out before CvS2 it would look rough and cheap, because CvS1 still offered much more. This game is 100% recycled content besides stages. At least the gameplay could have been very well done as a kind of compensation to save it. Like MvC2, that is very recycled (not like this one but about 90%), worse in graphics and music, has no story content, but the gameplay and roster are the highlights and make it a great game. Maybe if it was before CvS1 it wouldn't feel dirt cheap.

Outside of the fact it was Capcom continuing to lazily reuse character sprites from their older 2D fighting games, the fact you weren't given the option to choose what fighting game style you could give to chosen characters instead of locking them to a specific style made the gameplay pretty unbalanced in favor of characters from specific franchises. Only high point were the comic style character endings done by Udon.

Bruh, this game unlocked a memory of my childhood I thought I didn't have. This game was probably one of the few fighting games we had in PS2 and it was so bad coz all the characters felt heavy.
This game definitely deserves a remake, because the concept was great: a fighter celebrating Capcom’s fighting/arcade history. It had the unfortunate luck of being a rushed product with no budget, time, marketing, or overall corporate support and it’s failure led to the fighting game dark age. If they were to remake it, they should take a page from NGBC and include a mix of iconic characters and lesser known ones from their vaults to showcase their history: Battle Circuit, Magic Sword, Plasma Sword, etc No mix of different graphics but one and it can be similar to the 2.5D graphics from Street Fighter Duel.

IMO the sheer laziness of literally taking all the sprites from the old games, just mashing them together and ending up with a very disjointed look. Even the backgrounds with barely any animation to them showed how extremely low budget this title was. It didn't have any hope.

@@d0k0night The thing is that 2d fgs relied on recycling sprites, which is the only reason why the genre lasted for so long... but the companies used to have the decency of expanding their games in each sequel that recycled sprites. Some of the few exceptions that had no new chars were SF2CE and HF, VSAV2, VHUN2, KOF 02 and SS5S. But then CFE is 100% recycled and yet doesn't over-deliver in other aspects like music and gameplay, which could have kinda saved the game. Like KOF 02 that must be still in the top 3 most popular titles of the series. And CFE being that way looks very bad as a game coming after MVC2 and CvS2. MVC2 btw is an example of a mostly recycled game but that is saved by a huge expansion of roster and gameplay. And that could have happened to CFE if the devs weren't lazy and Capcom still cared like until 2001 (the last year that Capcom cared about fgs... And coincidence or not, the release year of DMC1).
@carlosaugusto9821

The concept truly is excellent, even though one could say it doesn't look special after the creation of Smash Bros. But anyway that kind of wild crossover is something much needed in the fg genre. KOF, that is actually the first crossover fg, doesn't stand out so much in that sense because of the roster is too normal. Only in things like Marvel, TVC, SVC and NGBC. And I wish Capcom returned to this idea of Capcom crossover nowadays. Compared to this idea I don't even want to hear about MVC anymore. But it would need another name to avoid the controversy. Really extensive roster and lots of references in stages and story mode in the same fashion of Pocket Fighter and SFXT. From Cyberbots and Power Stone to Monster Hunter and DMC.
My bro bought this many years ago for PS2 and we had a lot of fun in arcade mode. We eventually managed to unlock Pyron and Akuma, we were so happy. I think I mained Sakura, Karin, Kenji and Dmitri. It was cool because I had no idea games like Darkstalkers and Red Earth existed, so it was my first time seeing a lot of different Capcom characters. The music is pretty rad, too. I gotta admit, the ost in this game goes way too hard. that's honestly my favorite part of the game, the music. the pyron and shin Akuma themes are waaaay better than they needed to be.
I never got this game because CAPCOM failed to make Morrigan as a playable character.

Iirc this was Ono's first step into Capcom fighting games taking over an unfinished project without any vision from the previous director.
The comic panel endings were pretty sick. Kinda like mvc3. To me, this game is a mess but for a rushed out crossover after cancelling a game that could've been decent despite negative reception during testing but it had potential for some interesting gameplay. I kinda like the idea of choosing characters that fight in a similar way to the games they showed up in (Ryu with SF2 mechanics vs Demitri with Darkstalkers mechanics) but this needed more time, more characters from other franchises that aren't fighting games, an option to use the different fighting styles with the default being a universal but still natural fighting system and definitely more fan favorites and cameos.

That system was a kind of stepback from the versatility invented in previous games, starting from SFA3 isms. If there was a balancing concern about CvS2 having too many modes, then ok just make a new game with less modes, like 4 or 3. But removing options wasn't good. (I also criticize KOF every single time for removing modes after KOF 98, given that KOF was the game that invented this idea in the fg genre and it should use it proudly)

I completely forgot about this game. I feel like it was well known for about a week or two in the early 2000s and then just disappeared without a trace. I think it was originally supposed to be a game made with polygons and some kind of Tekken style combat that they could not get to work so they made an official Mugen type thing to recap their loses. Because of the different sources, some of the characters had loads of animation frames cut to balance it out which meant all the CP system 3 games looked shit.
Yoshinori Ono mentioned that this game is a destroyed version of the unreleased Capcom Fighting All Stars.
As far back as my memory goes, this was my first fighting game. If I am not mistaken, CFJ was a lazy attempt of capcom to revive CVS2 by mashing in a lot of characters without balancing it.
This game is Capcom's second Mugen attempt. The first was Mvc2. "They had a good idea, but they didn't try to balance it." Yeah...just like Mvc2: Toss a bunch of sprites from previous games together, cut a shitload of animations to keep system requirements low, add new music and backgrounds and pray for the best.

I remember this game fondly and all the people who hated it.
I'm not sure that I'd necessarily call this the game that killed Capcom fighters. By the time this came out, the Capcom beancounters firmly believed that fighters, especially 2D fighters, were a deadend for Capcom (side note: The game that *actually* killed Capcom's interest in investing in brand new 2D fighters was actually Street Fighter 3: New Generation - when that game tanked, Capcom internally made a declaration that no more completely new 2D fighters would be made; they could all re-use sprites alongside new ones, but no more completely brand 2D new fighters). Capcom Fighting All-Stars was supposed to have been Capcom's big break into fighters with 3D graphics (Arika developed SF EX series), but when CFAS had horrible reception in the JPN location test, the beancounters decided to cut their losses and scratch the whole thing and put new fighting games on the shelf for good. CFJ was really thrown out as one last way to squeeze money out of their aging sprites, but the damage had been done long before that game was tossed out. It took Ono (who worked on CFJ) years of begging Capcom to greenlit a proper new SF game (with an actual budget). And even then, his begging and the advice of expensive consultants fell on deaf ears until the beancounters were surprised by the robust sales of SF2:HF on Xbox Live. I can't hate on CFJ. WHile it is soulless and imbalanced, I honestly preferred that coming out to the original CFAS coming out. CFJ was Capcom at their laziest, and it was *all right*. Nothing really new, but nothing especially bad either. At worst, it was not representative of what Capcom could do when they had a budget. CFAS was Capcom *actually trying* with what I thought were a lot of bad ideas and subpar graphics (CFAS barely looked better than the then years-old SFEX3, which itself looked lousy on release compared to older comtemporaries like Soul Calibur and Dead or Alive 2). Had CFAS come out and bombed, which it most likely would have despite what a bunch of online Captain Hindsights might claim, it would have done *far* more reputational damage to Capcom and made SFIV even less likely to come out.

Capcom felt insecure because they truly never had an outstanding execution on 3d fgs. If we pay attention that even Arika's SF EX games were better to play than Star Gladiator and Rival Schools from the same period. And at some point even sequels of minor games like Bloody Roar 2 were superior than those 3d fg attempts from Capcom. And evidently Star Gladiator is embarrassing being from the same year of Tekken 3, and if I'm not mistaken Rival Schools 2 is from the same year of Dead or Alive 2. Those 2d fg companies had such a journey to get any skill in 3d fgs, which Namco, Sega and Tecmo were naturally so much ahead since the 90s. SNK had their embarrassing 3d attempts with Samurai Shodown and Fatal Fury in the 90s. And of course Midway had MK4, a more (in)famous example. And the struggle continued through the 2000s with the 3d MK games, SNK's 3d KOF and 3d SS games. The only 2d company that didn't have any embarrassing episode with 3d fg transition was Arc Systems, that started with the incredible GG Xrd. Good for them, but it was an exception in fg history.
Honestly I love the concept lmao. To me this is a game I'd want to get drunk and throw down with the boys in.
I remember getting this game the week it came out. I was crushed by how bad it was. I tried to return it but the game store refused to take it back because too many people returned their copies in too short a time. I had to threaten to call the cops and ended up trading for a copy of Megman 8 or something.
That looks mental to play coz ive neva played it yet no even when it came out
