WHY DID EFREN DO THAT? … Out Of 33 Options

Спорт

My previous video featured the Top 10 Most Famous Shots from Efren Bata “The Magician” Reyes. One of the shots (Shot 9) generated some interesting discussion on social media. Efren used a drag shot with inside spin to pocket the 7 and bump into the 8. In this video, I demonstrates 33 different shot options and try to explain what Efren was thinking and whether or not he made the right choice. Of course, he did.
This is part of the "Most Famous Pool Shots" series:

    Just curious, out of 33 options, what was the average number of attempts on each option?

  • @DrDaveBilliards

    @DrDaveBilliards

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@LilChrisPoolPlayer I should have kept track, but I didn't. Many of the early options were fairly easy and only took several attempts, and many of the ridiculous shots (22-33) were flukes from when I was trying to do something else, so they only took 1 each. I would guess that I took 250-300 shots during the entire filming session, so that would put the overall average at about 7-9 attempts per shot option. Now, if I were to try to recreate shots 22-33 on purpose, it might take thousands of attempts.

    1. The original layout in Efren's match, he was playing against CJ Wiley and it was the 6, 7, 9 left on the table. Efren js a very skilled Carom player and I believe he intended to carommthe cueball into the 7 so to take away the risk of the cueball getting a big bounce off the rail and scratching on the lower right corner, plus he already knew that he has a big percentage of having an easy shot on the 7 afterwards to get out of the rack. Also, the 6 was a little closer to head rail which made the cut shot much. Finaly, the match was on the PBT and they were using Simonis 860 cloth on the tables, since the Simonis Cloth was already available on the markrt and being used in pro tournaments since the very kate 1980's / early 1990's. Still a very good video though and well put together and so, definitely a thumbs up from me 😎👍🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

    By the "7," you must mean the "8." You are right though ... I used the 7, 8, 9 instead of the 6, 8, 9 since the numbers didn't really matter ... on the order. As I stated during my wrap-up summary, you might be right about Efren wanting to head into the 8 since there were so many other good things that could happen. Thanks for the info about the cloth. Regardless, the conditions of his table looked a slower than my new Simonis 860HR.

    Obviously, it would be great if Efren could explain it himself, but I am fairly confident why my explanation at the end of the video here: answer to the question: Why Did Efren Do That? [13:49] As you would expect, he made the right choice, and for many good reasons.

    Making that particular cut shot would have to be about the only thing on my mind or I would probably miss the shot, If i were to start thinking too much about the leave on the 8 the chances of me missing would go up proportional to the amount of time i thought about it, with only the 2 balls left I'd have to rely on making another just as tough shot for the 8 if didn't get a bit of luck. Efren is awesome but he also got lucky, i think this shot was a tad on the lucky side for him. But when your the greatest you get to count all those luck shots as pure skill. IMO of course. Another good video Doc! and thats alot of options

  • @jamesdavis8731

    Absolutely he got lucky on this shot. There was no good reason to play the shot the way it was played and I can almost guarantee that if you asked Efren he would say the same thing. I see Efren from time to time here in Makati. I am going to show him this video and ask him if he remembers why he chose that option. There would be no real good reason to attempt to come off the short rail with right hand spin and hit the eight ball. He could have easily screwed that whole thing up by making the seven ball harder to pocket or hitting the eight and getting bad on it. With his skill level going up and down was BY FAR the best and safest option. The speed control would not have been an issue. If he hit it too hard he has a fairly easy shot into the lower right corner. If he hits the shot too soft he has a fairly easy shot into the upper right corner. If he hits it somewhere in the middle he still has a fairly easy shot (and position after the shot) in the side pocket. Sometimes great players just try to do too much with the cue ball. It worked for Efren this time but I doubt he would attempt this shot the same way again.

  • @jamesdavis8731

    @jamesdavis8731

    @@DrDaveBilliards why would taking a shot that was totally unnecessary be a smart choice? That statement literally makes no sense. @MarsMatters

    @@jamesdavis8731 Something I think you might not be considering is that, for players at that level, adding some sidespin doesn't decrease the chances of making the ball by very much at all. Assume his chances of making the shot are 99% with no spin, and his chances of making it with spin is 98%. But his chances of getting safe is he misses are 1% with no spin, and 90% with spin, you can calculate that his chances of selling out from that position go from 1/99 to 1/450. With such a difference, you can see how even if you change the percentages a bit the shot would still make sense. For example, if his odds of making the shot with no spin were 99% and with spin 95%, but we assume the same odds as before for getting safe, the odds of selling out become essentially 1/100 vs 1/200. It's the insane accuracy with and without spin that allows for these kinds of calculations, which may seem strange to an average player whose chance of missing goes up significantly with spin. Honestly though, even for an average player who will be 75% likely to make it without spin and 25% likely to make it with spin, getting safe if you miss 90% of the time still makes it a much better shot for the same reason.

And Efren taking an unusually longer time to go to that option with his ridiculous reservoir of mental database of every angle and nuances on a pool table on kicking, makes you think that could be the best option perhaps even after all these years.

    I think the reason Reyes made the shot he did was to make two balls with one shot to show off. He in fact has made a lot of very difficult and crazy shots to show off his abilities. Like banking a shot when he an easy shot with the cue ball right behind the object ball in a corner pocket. I have seen him go all the way down the opposite corner and make the ball with a bank shot

    I've watched Efren play a lot and he has a tendency to run into or nudge the next ball he is planning to make. Sometimes it gets him in trouble when he doesn't quite get the right hit on the next ball and leaves the cue in an awkward position. I believe the shot he made is exactly what he wanted to do.

    Shooting the ball the way he shot it adds a level of security to the object ball. If you cut the ball with inside the induced throw causes the cut shot to react like it's a fuller cut and you hit the rail before the pocket. Also the induced English applied to the object ball allows the ball to spin in the pocket after hitting the rail, cinching the shot. And the cue ball dies after contact. Efren constantly uses soft spin in his shooting, it's more noticeable if you watch him play live.

    Have you ever done a video on the subject of practical accuracy vs cue ball speed and english? No table is perfect, and even the slightest imperfection affects slow rolls much more than fast ones. I've also known old-timers who excessively use draw on nearly every shot, because it gives them more absolute control over the travel of the cue ball. Any comments on those things?

  • @DrDaveBilliards

    @DrDaveBilliards

    I haven't really "studied" these things, but some things are obvious: - a slow-rolling ball can be affected by a non-level table and dirt on the cloth. - beyond a certain speed (depends on the person), stroke accuracy typically goes down. - using stun and draw to minimize CB motion offers better control of CB position.

    so much envy, It was Efren Reyes! why question his ability to make the shots. compete and win a competition first and be known to the world as a great player before you could even suspect Efren's ability.

    It is ridiculous to think somebody would actually consider all the crazy options (especially 21-33). I just did those for fun. But I guarantee any good player considers all the realistic options (at least 1-11) and chooses the one with the best chances of success.

    I think the video is lacking doc. Before he shot it, he pointed his cue somewhere where he imagined where the eight ball would end up.

    He was looking at and thinking about all sorts of things as he was planning the shot. Check out my summary at the end of the video starting at the 13:28 point. He might have been visualizing where the CB would end up if he went past the 8 and missed the 7 (for a two-way shot). Only Efren knows for sure, but I think my summary is accurate based on all the information available.
