I think Daisy is actually just moving up in the cast as her slight redesign in the switch era, updated and new renders, smash, run, included in a lot of promotional stuff, her band in Nintendo world and now wonder. It all just points to me that they're deciding to use her to be apart of the main cast.

After her popularity in Smash, I'm THRILLED to see them willing to incorporate Daisy again! It's always shocked me how little attention they've paid to her over the years when it seems almost obvious to even just throw her in as an NPC or a cameo at some point, but to see her playable!? That's a surprise I never saw coming. Thanks for spreading (and dissecting) the hype!

Pauline is definitely slowly becoming a “tier 3” character, and I’m excited to see her join more and more Mario media!

As someone whose first games were Super Mario Land and Donkey Kong 94 this makes me so unbelievable happy, always loved Daisy and was sad she was side lined so much.

Daisy's inclusion really makes me think, that their really going to be pushing the boundaries of the Mario franchise this time around. Never in years would I imagine a character who's only mainline appearances was her debut and a phone game would be in a New 2D Mario game. I'm hoping that this means she'll get use more often in other games such as Luigi's mansion or that untitled Peach game as a second player next year.

This video is 100% accurate and solid. Part of why the NSMB Era games became so stale is because of how predictable they were down to their casts. The main protags would a l w a y s be Mario, Luigi, & a Toad or two. With only 3D World shaking this up for once by at least bringing in Peach again. And even though we got the rise of Toadette and Rosalina in mainline Mario, they're cool and all... but they also had a bit of a "safe" energy to them. Of course Rosalina, this recent and marketable character would make it. Ofc Toadette, basically another Toad, would make it. There was always still some safe energy behind them. Daisy is this 30 yr character who is theoretically "irrelevant", and should be left to rot in spinoff shackles. But them using a fan favorite character to change up the roster for once really shows a willingness to change and break out that stubborn and safe mentality. And that sold me on Mario Wonder more than anything tbh.

@@Quinhala11 Yes. Because this is a character who felt like they were banned from mainline games for years, for no reason, despite continued appearances in the overall series. Yes Rosalina had more actual story and depth, but she didn't have build-up to her popularity and standard appearances... she was just thrown into everything because she was new. Be for real. Nintendo wasn't thinking about her "story potential" lmao. Also by your logic, characters like Toadette and Luigi are worthless because they literally started out as "Green Player 2 Mario" or "Girl Toad made so he has a partner". There was also the myth that "Miyamoto and Nintendo hates characters like Daisy and Wario!" Even though a character like Wario at least made it into mainline lol. Swear, the arguments Mario fans make up against other characters is they're copies of other characters... when who we're stuck with in place of them are ACTUAL copies... like re-colored Toads or Metal clones. So thus, its why I say those characters are more safe than Daisy. She's an actual unique character with some type of background and her own personality at LEAST. Not a literal Peach clone that's something like say... Pink Gold lel.

this is such a fun topic, thanks for your tiers and breakdown!! personally as a long time daisy fan and long time ~~girl gamer~~ I never thought Id see the day, but it might also sit in an even bigger trend at nintendo: Ive heard Aya Kyogoku had been pushing for getting more girls interested in gaming, rather than pursuing a 'blue ocean' via a different age demographic, for years and years before breakthroughs with New Leaf and even more prominently saleswise, New Horizons. Things like New Horizons 40mil, Splatoon as the first series with mainly female faces and now Daisy being tier one material may well show fruits of a decade plus long internal shift to appeal to girls more IMO

@@Officialchristophermorris yeah like they specifically removed a new voice line in Mario golf super rush and substituted it for an old voice line. Their treatment for princes Daisy is extremely incredibly inconsistent. I mean they have her in Mario run (Nintendo’s only mainline mobile game I think) and they have her in Nintendo world. Only the most popular and important characters are included in that theme park: Mario Luigi Peach Daisy Toad and Yoshi (same cast as Mario Run) I mean idk what to expect next. Can we expect a brief cameo in super princess peach 2? Or can we expect her to be in the Mario sequel / Luigi’s mansion movie? Who knows all i know is that I’m extremely grateful from the bottom of my heart that Daisy is finally in a mainline console platformer.

I love playing as peach.. but Daisy being included for the first time, tempts me to play as her.

Given the rumors about the Ice Flower and Super Leaf being part of the Power-Ups in Wonder, one will have to wonder how Daisy would look when using them.

Princess Daisy has had a mainly good 2023. The good is Daisy Cruiser in BCP wave 5 and as a playable character in Mario Bros Wonder. The bad is that the datamined MOBDK track turned out to de a revival of DS Dokan Course called Pirhana Plant Pipeline and not a Sarasaland (Daisy Kingdom) track.

This was a VERY well versed video, especially the analyzation of the Mario character tiers based on trends. As a Daisy fan, obviously her inclusion is what I'm most excited for, and it is undoubtedly surreal to finally see her in a mainline game after 30 years. And to see that someone who isn't even a Daisy is shocked and excited shows how groundbreaking it is!

Here's the thing, Daisy was pretty much foreshadowed since her playable appearance in Super Mario Run with Yoshi. Nintendo considers that mainline and with her Smash Bros debut and her presence as part of the core cast in Super Nintendo World, her chances were pretty much locked.

It's the fact that she debuted in 1989 and wasn't getting much acknowledgement until this year, while, Rosalina who debuted in 2007 became more prominent from 2014 to around 2019 ish. Given that Luigi got the "Year of Luigi" in 2013 (30 years after his debut), it would've been good if she got her own year in 2019 since she debuted in 1989, but, sure, good for Daisy finally getting more acknowledgement!!! 💕

Better yet, since this game is highly associated with flowers. (Eg. Flower Kingdom, Wonder Flower, Wonder Seed), it's a possibility that Daisy may not only be important gameplay wise, but even story wise. Since, as her name and overall design suggests, she's mainly associated with Flowers. Perhaps we'll get to see Sarasaland once more in this game as a world or smth! Either way, I'm happy for the Daisy fans, while I'm not one myself, I'm still happy for 'em! (Although...being a Donkey Kong fan ain't quite the best for these ongoing years...)

The Next thing I want: a Mario Animated Series with Daisy being the 4th main character!

Wonder was already good, but playable Daisy is just the Icing on the cake. I "wonder" if Nintendo will put her in other mainline Mario games.

I pray there's a Luigi's Mansion onscreen with Princess Daisy featuring before the end of my days.

I think your character tiers were absolutely spot on and you explained them so well

I find it very refreshing that instead of Rosalina or Toadette (or hell, even Pauline), they went for a less obvious choice

The main problem is that your completely forgetting Super Mario Run

I found out Daisy through the Nintendo DS game "Mario Hoops 3 on 3", and it was love at first sight. Since I was a teenager I dreamt of her been in a mainline game (I'm 28 years old now). I hope super "Mario Bros. Wonder" is only the first one of a long series! 🙏🏻🌼

I honestly believe Daisy has finally appeared in a mainline Mario series because of Super Nintendo World (her as well as Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, and Yoshi are the main 6 that make up team Mario and have power up bands made after them). I also believe that Nintendo is definitely going to utilize Daisy in the upcoming sequel for the Super Mario Bros. Movie :)

I never insinuated that these tiers are anything but a personal method to simplify the character utilization we’ve seen in mainline games and spin-offs, not that there’s like, a graph at Nintendo HQ titled “CHARACTER TIERS”. In comparison, Mario Mandate discussion usually incorporates assumptions - often contradictory among series’ like Paper Mario and Mario + Rabbids - to boldly claim that “this is what Nintendo developers aren’t allowed to do”. Super Mario Bros. 3 & Super Mario World are considered two of the greatest video games ever made, while Donkey Kong Country is also among them but sold much less than Super Mario Bros 3, and Diddy Kong's Quest is considered lesser than the original selling way less than the previous game. Mario has been clowning on Donkey Kong since the beginning dude. Hell he MADE Donkey Kong the icon he is today. I mean no shade when I say that is a VERY controversial hot take.

Not true. Mario 3 and World are great, but DKC trilogy is pretty universally considered easily one of the best trilogies EVER. Just because they didn't sell like mario(no one does) doesn't mean they weren't better games and experiences.

The fact that Daisy's finnaly gonna be in a 2d mario game is amazing. For some reason i find that the fact that this mario game includes daisy Is maybe the biggest most important part of this game. Daisy has never played such a major roll in a mario game. Being able to play as daisy in a Mariogame is something that we don't get to do in enough mario games. I think that honestly, daisy is a really good mario character and that she should be a playable character in more of the mario games. Daisy is one of my favorite mario characters. She really hasn't been included enough In the mario video games. They really had to put daisy in this game. I'm really glad they put daisy into this game👍

My logic was that he feels more like a “guest” than most of the other characters due to his separate notoriety. But I can definitely see why someone would fit him into the second tier.

Bowser Jr is definitely on the first tier, he's in Sunshine, the 2 Galaxies, Bowser's Fury, all NSMBs except 2, Smash, the Parks, merchandise, is gonna be in Wonder... I don't understand how Daisy being in it changes anything, Toadette literally originated from the spinoffs and is the only individual Toad outside of Toadsworth to be used like this, and she's co-lead of Captain Toad, she's in Maker, was the big new thing of NSMBUD... Toadette's inclusion in anything is waay more significant than Orange Daisy (and i say this as a Daisy fan)

Yeah hopefully the second tier characters like the Wario bros and Rosalina will be unlockable.

Same thing could be said about Pauline in regards to finally have her appear playable in spin off games.

My favourite Mario universe character is Daisy!

I don't think there was mandates in the first place, a lot these supposed mandates originate from people speculations. For example the Daisy one people just assume since she wasn't solely made by Nintendo that she only would appear in spin-off content. The same goes for Waluigi, I don't think there is really an actual dislike but that there isn't much of a reason to use him outside of the games he shows up in. We know Waluigi's motives and how it's more focused on besting Luigi in Sports, Party, and Karting events. We also know Waluigi is not Wario's brother, related, or even his friend and is mostly a sports partner. In addition to him not seeming to be friends with the others or adventurer type, it makes sense why he doesn't show up. Nintendo isn't beyond referencing him in games. With that being said it's not like it's "spin-off" thing either. We see Wario show up in SM64DS, and the Ice Flower from PIT show up in NSMBWII and beyond. Even the Mini and Mega Mushroom come from a Party game. The character design one, it's based on a vague statement that never explained what was meant by it. Further making less sense when Intelligent Systems confirmed they had full creative control, and contradicted by them making original characters and mixing up the designs even if barely.. And even if there was one Nintendo has abandoned it long ago with Tour and Odyssey being prime examples. Personally while I get people trying to separate what they consider "mainline and spin off games," I mostly dislike and reject it. This is because people can't ever agree what is and isn't a mainline game. In addition to this distinction often being used to downgrade anything not labeled a "mainline game." In addition to people trying to throw out said games from the canon. I think characters show up in games where there is some sense. Daisy shows up in sports, karting, and party events because most anyone can attend, in addition her not showing up in other games because she's either off doing her own thing as a Princess or not getting kidnapped. Daisy makes sense in Super Mario Wonder given the opening' details. Similar to how Donkey Kong is busy on the Kong Archipelago and Wario is off in Diamond City doing his own thing. Or how unless Bowser pulls a Lost Levels and does another Odyssey we probably won't see Cappy outside of cameos and sports games. Meanwhile the Yoshi's make sense because one is Mario's buddy, and the rest alongside that one live in Mushroom Kingdom. Blue, Red, and Yellow Toad alongside Toadette make sense cause they also live in the Mushroom Kingdom. Nabbit makes sense because he's keeping tabs on Mario and Friends. etc etc

The only game i'm hyped about. Not even Starfield gets me this hyped and i dont have a switch... yet ;)

All the tiers got their chance at a 2D game in the original Super Mario Maker. Or at least Mario could pretend to be them. I guess that one doesn't count either haha.

Wonder isn't really worth the hype.
