Why Covering Health and Fitness in Education is so Hard

Комедия

This week, we have a special guest joining us to talk all things health and fitness in education - TikTok sensation and PE teacher extraordinaire, Meghan Matulewicz (@ms_matulewicz)!
Together we dive head first into the world of teaching health and fitness in schools, and let's just say things are about to get awkwardly sweaty. From dodging flying dodgeballs to trying to convince middle schoolers that deodorant is NOT optional, collectively, we have seen it all.
We also share our experience and tips for navigating the trickier aspects of the subject matter. We're talking puberty talks, awkward questions, and the delicate dance of making sure every student feels included and valued.
So, whether you're a seasoned PE pro or a newbie health teacher, join us for some laughs and lessons on this week's episode of Teachers Off Duty. Just don't forget to stretch first!

I'm the total opposite of this crew, lol. I flunked Phys ED every year because back in my day they wouldn't accommodate for disabilities. I think the curric in some areas has improved, but generally PE is sport based, and sport is NOT the same thing as fitness for it's own sake. I'm a professional *fitness* instructor now, but I still can't do any sports because of my vision impairment. So, folks like me who always flunked PE, you're not unfit, you're just not sporty and those are 2 different things.

Y’all should do an episode on religions in classrooms! There’s so much gray area regarding what different religions and beliefs can be taught and what students can ask questions about. And I’m sure there’s plenty of stories about it too!

In my p.e class we change, do the warm up routine and play sports, right now we are in Volleyball. But this year what I found interesting was that they teached us about cpr and we all practiced on manquinnes I found that pretty educational.

I remember asking in high school if accidentally taking more than one pill was abusing drugs and if GERD was an eating disorder. Apparently the answer to both was yes. (this health class obviously covered teen health related issues like drug addiction and eating disorder types. Not body image but still better than most). Note to teachers teaching that curriculum: I would redirect to a doctor for the GERD thing and for the pill thing recommend a tablet separater.

Gym class is really underrated. We didn't use the term "safe adult" when I was a kid. I was born in 1993. However, I just remember my 7th grade gym teacher was that for me. I ran into him when I was 19 (turns out his in-laws were my grandparents neighbors). and he was still the same nice guy.

My school district didn't teach about sex ed until 10th grade but in 8th we had a health class that showed us Supersize Me and another movie that absolutely demonized sugar... that was the year I developed an eating disorder

My gym teacher in elementary wouldn’t let me go to the bathroom half way into gym. She said “ well you have a FIVE minute snack time before this you should have gin then “ ( I should also note this was In second grade) she told me I had to owe MY WHOLE RECESS!!! Luckily my actual teacher only had me owe 5 minutes. She would have told me nothing but she couldn’t completely override it she had to still have me owe some recess.

I’m from Washington and just graduated with a PE degree. It is actually called a PESH degree which is physical education and school health. 1/2 of my classes were PE and the other half were health. It is interesting treating to me how the same degree changes from college to college. I love hearing from other teachers ❤

when it comes to classroom management, a lot of the strategies that we were told to use did not work with my students lol. The best way to assess is to see what your students react well to and go from there.

We have to go through a lesson which is an hour long every year that is about like what to do when you have your period and like how to take care of your body and sometimes we have special guests. I always dread that day because the topic is just so awkward. Edit: It's the next day and I think I jinxed it. Our lesson is tomorrow and it's gonna be like 3 hours long.

I was honestly surprised how they didn’t talk about how PE has become a free class. The middle school students in my area have learned that they can choose to sit out and still pass the class! It all goes back to mental health though, but still I could never be proud looking back at a F in PE🤔

Sympathizing big time with Gabe on the sub plans, when I was a substitute that was generally the norm for about 75% of the teaching jobs I took- ESPECIALLY when it came to classroom equipment or how the sub binder was organized and how directions were worded (Literally one of my first jobs was teaching a Kindergarten class and the teacher made a big deal about using "The LadyBug", Kids complaining about not seeing the work books or the read aloud book? just use the Ladybug! Turns out that was the projector equipment 😓). If there's ever a substitute at our school now I try to go above and beyond to help them with sub plans and any questions about equipment, classroom management etc.
