Spain was HOT - so in this edition of talking points, we're focussing on the whys and the hows of cooling F1 cars. Why is it so important and how to teams trade cooling with performance?
We also look at those Red Bull team orders and whether Mercedes are ready to disrupt the championship!

    I would also give credit to Pirelli. Multiple stop races are common this season, and it's way more exciting than 1-stoppers. As for the red bull team order, I think the only part that is unfair is that the team didn't repay the favor back to Checo when Max was stuck behind Russell with Checo on much faster and fresh tire.

    Sorry but all of that's nonsense. The compound deltas and deg are pretty much as they were last year. All that's changed is cars can follow easier, and so, a race with more stops - that's theoretically faster but requires more time in other cars' dirty air and overtaking them - is now more feasible. Pirelli have been doing exactly what f1 have asked them to do for at least a decade now. The cars just fit better now

    @@davidcormack375 Don't forget that these cars are new and tire management has lots of variables that have to do with how the car drives as well. The longer these cars are being developed the better tire management gets and thus tire degredation will become less and less.

    So far, "worse" has meant "incompatible with the circuit". With the cars being too wide for the streets of Monaco, racing is a procession with little to no overtaking at all. I don't know if the 2022 cars will be any better on Monaco streets. The only Monaco race I can watch at this point is the Monaco e-prix. Formula E cars are so much more suited to the street circuit. I can really see the track shine with ample chaos and overtaking opportunities to keep me at the edge of my seat through and through.

    To understand the crazy heat rejection, it's useful to subjectively quantify the amount of heat being rejected. As some napkin-math, if you assume the car outputs about 1000hp, and is about 40% thermally efficient, that means it's rejecting somewhere around 1100-1200KW of heat. So like 500-700 standard space heaters. Additionally, many of their components are designed to run most efficiently at their race temp; being to hot makes them softer, being too cool may mean more rubbing.

    Since F1 engines aren't running in sub 4°C temperatures, you wouldn't use Glycol, as that increases the viscosity and lowers the specific heat capacity of the coolant. Since you want to minimize losses in the system, you want a small cooling system, with the most efficient coolant, which is pure water in this case.

    Rain on race day at Monaco has the potential to make it an even more boring race. If the whole race is wet, everyone will just start on intermediate tyres and go to the end of the race without making a pitstop. Sure it might theoretically be faster to stop halfway through for new inters, but since you can't overtake at Monaco, especially not in wet conditions without DRS, losing track position by making a pitstop essentially means losing points. It might be a race with literally no overtakes at all and not even the potential for pitstop strategy to come into play. ' With how slow the hairpin is, being 6 meters behind the car in front at the hairpin at 50 km/h already means well over 4 tenths behind there, with literally no way to get to a shorter time delta because the car is just that size.

    No ferrari and others knew performance mods where locked this year and beyond. But reliability is not. So you go 100% performance and fix reliabiloty later if needed. That said red bull is a combo of issues while ferrari is smoking turbos and engines non stop. So ferrari is at bigger risk

  • @benfulford3943

    @benfulford3943

    @@captaintoyota3171 well it isn't just PU issues that the teams have been having. Mclaren have had loads of issues with brake cooling and RB with rear wings and DRS. However I'm not convinced that the teams are going to be sacrificing reliability to fix later. The old adage 'to finish first, first you must finish'. The penalties for new engines are so harsh these days and reliability is baked into the PU formula. This season is ferrari best chance of winning (although that looks over now) so I don't think they'd intentionally develop an unreliable PU. Historically the last engine freeze during the v8s the reliability fixes was used as an excuse to equalise the PUs so I think it was Renault were allowed to upgrade it to give us much power as Mercedes but used the excuse of reliability upgrade
