“What do taking the escalator and poker have in common?”
Long time high stakes poker pro Phil Galfond is here with advice for how to exploit discomfort (and comfort) at the poker table.
Whether you’re playing low stakes live poker or you are trying to jump into high stakes online poker games, you’re going to find poker players of every level or game format have degrees of comfortability at the poker table (including yourself!)
It might seem counterintuitive, but playing comfortably at the poker table and searching out comfortable lines is a common thought process poker leak that might be stunting your growth (and bankroll) as a poker player (and that other poker players can exploit!)
As Phil Galfond says in this poker mindset strategy video - humans often opt for the more comfortable path, even at the detriment to their own health (or to the detriment of their poker strategy!)
It’s commonly understood when you’re looking for emotions to exploit at the poker table that fear can lead to big folds, excitement can lead to huge over plays and big gambles, while comfort is often ignored.
Phil Galfond believes that comfort leads to more emotional mistakes at the poker table than fear or excitement, especially for competent poker players.
While competent players won’t make the common beginner poker mistakes of huge over folds or wild gambling calls, competent poker players often make comfortable plays that are just a little bit easier than the alternative.
For that reason, Phil Galfond believes that comfort is the NUMBER ONE poker leak creator amongst the emotions that we have at the poker table.
It might not be clear why from this description but will be clear after watching the video, but behind discomfort is where you find growth and the ability to plug huge leaks in your poker game.
Like the Austrian poet Rilke (almost) said, “Our deepest fears are like dragons, guarding our coolest poker plays.”
Through the rest of the video Phil has excellent advice for how to face discomfort, how to exploit comfort and discomfort in other poker players, and how to stop the pattern of playing comfortably being exploited against you.
Are you a new or beginner poker player, committed to doing your best playing online or live poker?
Do you need the BEST Texas Hold ‘em poker strategy and the BEST Pot Limit Omaha tips?
Do you have a high stakes poker story question that you’d like to hear from the POV of a poker professional who was THERE?
In almost every poker related video on this channel, Phil Galfond is here to teach you how to think like a professional poker player.
So leave a comment and your question might end up in the next one of Phil’s quick poker tips videos or inspiring one of his high stakes poker story clips!

Makes a good calendar slogan on your bedside table, but in reality for most people going after an amazing life leads to the loss of their beloved comfort zone and dangerous destabilization of their functioning basic lives.

Weird Comment Alert: Stepping out of my comfort zone, I am not even gay and I would let this guy do what he wants to me. I am joking, but serious too. I always had this thought experiment of if I were a woman, what type of man would I trust. I was not surprised at all to see this guy wearing a wedding ring. I am an older guy who has acquired some wisdom over the years so nothing in this video really stood out to me, but I would love to see more videos like this because this younger guy could probably teach me to look at some things in life differently.

Phil, I've been following you and listening to your material for over 10 years. Member of bluefire and RIO. There is general wisdom at the bottom of a lot of the things you speak about. As a person with a deep interest in philosophy and religion it would be very interesting to hear more about your personal sources of inspiration and life philosophy. Sort of detached from poker for once. Where you get your ideas, schools of thought, what you admire, what you read etc. Thank you very much! Daniel

I like the way you articulate this Phil. Really, we all like to think we are making emotionless decisions at the tables, but often times we are just labeling a decision that’s most comfortable to us in that moment as the “right” or “smart” decision, when we are really just playing into avoiding being put into potentially uncomfortable spots.

I feel a strong urge to post a second comment on this. The internet is filled to the brim with advice along the lines of "you really don't want to re-open the betting" with, say, draws on the turn where you can be priced out by a reraise, and marginal made hands on the river. My inituitive and natural state of game play is, or rather always was, to allow myself to step outside the comfort zone, as you talk about. But the be careful about re-opening advice has sneaked, to the point of becoming a giant leak. I've readjusted and tried it out in MTTs, despite mainly being a cash game player. 4 final tables in 20 MTTs w 1k+ runners. Cannot wait to get to the cash tables. If I ever run into you in Vegas, I'm buying you the biggest beer, there is to be found!

what's funny is living in nyc has made me 100% okay with confrontation. I used to be a west coast softie, but now if my order is completely wrong I will definitely say something. not in an aggressive way, but just to get the right thing and give feedback about how they didn't get it right. same thing goes for seeing something on the street and speaking up. I also thought it was funny that you brought up escalators, my mom refuses to ever take an escalator (even at airports lol!) and has definitely worn off on me. a lot of times it can be faster even.
