Why climate does (not) matter in Indian elections | DW News

The largest population of the world is going to the polls. Green growth and dirty coal, Prime Minister Modi was pushing for both in recent years. Despite being highly impacted by climate change there is little excitement for green policies.

@@xcel5203 yes because Germany, in fact, the whole of Europe did massive damage to the environment during the Industrial Revolution in 1800s. During development, there will be no way to avoid pollution unless people start cooperating without looking at loss or profit, and that won't happen. It's a big topic and blaming one country will not solve a problem. The whole world wants to have nuts, bolts, spoons, tables, buckets, and clothes which are mass-produced in developing countries and then they starts blaming India and China for no reason.

Even if we'd put in our best effort, we couldn't even come close to doing as much damage as China is doing. Germany is at 38% renewables, China at 23%. While in Germany coal makes up less than a fifth of energy supply it makes up more than half in China. Practically all the same stats apply to India, except that India is responsible for far less emissions than China. So yes, we absolutely have the right to lecture and we will continue using it. Moral policing and cherry picking. India has 17 percent of worlds population so it should technically emit 17 percent of worlds greenhouse gases but it only emits 7 percent. On the one hand you are telling to get rid of poverty in India and on the other hand you are telling to deindustrialise. I think DW needs to get its agenda straight that 3rd world countries should remain in absolute poverty so that 1st world can emit as much as they can.

India needs to get richer before it can clean the environment. That's the lesson from all industrialized countries. US had polluted air and water and many industrial accidents. Cities and rivers burned at the turn of the last century in the US. It's only when the US was able to afford to clean up the environment that it did so. The number one priority is growth, maximum growth for India. Absolutely nothing can get in the way of growth. India needs to get at least five times richer than today before you see meaningful reductions in air and water pollution.

Although India could be more ambitious in their net zero target, 17% of world's population is being responsible for 7% of global emissions. It's only rational that they should consume 10% more, or those who're consuming more bring down their share. Or am i missing something?

In Japan, a fire broke out in an area of solar power generation panels last month, and the measures were taken to wait for it to burn out because it could not be extinguished. The reason why the fire could not be extinguished was because if water or extinguishing agent were poured on the fire, harmful substances would mix with the burned panels and seep into the soil, making it impossible for the soil to regenerate. Therefore, the problems of invisible solar panels, cost, natural environment, China's information exploitation regarding panel control, and the disadvantage that functions can be stopped from the Chinese side have become major issues, leading to lawsuits all over Japan. This is the current situation.

USSR should have focused on improving standards of living instead of investing in the space race. America should have spent money on reducing racial inequality instead of investing in the space race. If you go by this logic humans should not to bother with space unless Earth is a perfect paradise for every single human.

Is that what you are trying to say ? This is also not covering all the historical emissions during the industrial revolution of Europe. You did what you did, we would do what we gotta do. Save the moral lectures to yourself and reduce your emissions.

Over simplified answer: development is costly and energy-hungry. "Developed" nations had their moment in history when they consumed and burnt fossil fuels to feed economic development. Now that the "developing" nations are, well, developing, no one can fault them when they go the same path of consuming fossil fuels. That is all.

If most people have to live and work in polluted, hot, unclean, cramped spaces to make a living, where is the luxury to examine and analyse surroundings? Even in the US there are so many climate-change deniers...
