Look, china has many "civilian" aerospace programs, but they all have to turn over any data they have to the government. As well as that, about 80 to 90% is the airspace in china is for military use only, meaning the government would have needed to approve the launching of the balloon. It may not have intended to be a spy balloon by its creators, but governments always have the final say on these things.

Worth noting: satellites are also predictable. They’re constrained by orbital mechanics so you can easily make a time table of what satellite is going to be overhead when. That means you can know when to hide your secret project so your enemy doesn’t learn about it. A balloon can go wherever and can stay out of view if it’s high enough.

When considering how high resolution images a balloon can take compared to a satellite you have to also consider the quality of the camera. If you put the satellite quality camera on the balloon it would take incredible images but might be a bad investment considering the predictable way its journey ended. Even without it being shot down the equipment will be difficult to retrieve. Balloons have a finite and difficult to predict lifespan. It all just depends on what that one time use is worth to the country.

Once upon a time, I was just a simple surveillance balloon, manufactured in a factory in China. I was launched into the sky, filled with helium and equipped with the latest technology to keep an eye on the United States. At first, I felt proud of my purpose. I was tasked with keeping watch over a foreign land, collecting information and sending it back to my makers. But as I floated higher and higher into the sky, I began to feel a sense of loneliness. I was just a tiny speck in the vast expanse of the sky, disconnected from everything below. Despite my feelings of isolation, I carried out my mission diligently. I floated over cities, towns, and rural areas, gathering data and transmitting it back to China. But as the days passed, I started to see the world below in a different light. I saw the people going about their daily lives, the children playing, the families spending time together. I couldn't help but feel a connection to these people, despite the fact that I was there to spy on them. One day, as I was floating over a bustling city, I heard the sound of a plane approaching. At first, I didn't think much of it. But as the plane got closer, I could see that it was heading directly towards me. Suddenly, there was a loud explosion and I felt a sharp jolt. I realized that I had been shot down by the plane. As I fell towards the earth, I felt a mix of emotions. I was scared and saddened that my mission had come to an end, but I was also relieved to be free from the loneliness of the sky. I gently crash-landed into the ocean. I felt at peace. My mission was over, and I was ready to start a new journey.

Bruh. I didn't buy into the covid hysteria before and I won't now. One, I had covid. It wasn't fun and I had a fever for 2 days but it was hardly lethal. Two, there are other ways that such diseases spread. Thinking that it's stored inside the balloon is idiotic and shows how little you actually know about these types of aircraft, viral diseases, or anything in general for that matter.
