My family is from Ambergris Caye off the coast of Belize (but I grew up in America), when I used to go out there in the late 80s and 90s it was very remote. We had to boil water on the stove to fill up the bathtub, etc. Nowadays its a tourist hellhole. Sad that the same is going to happen there.

First up, calibishie is far from the best place to go as a tourist.. far! 2. In order to flag a ride down you don't use a thumbs up. That's a sign for "okay". We see it as a friendly hi. You need to flatten the palm of your hand and gesture minisculey up and down. In the gesture of "slow down" or stop. Someone will likely stop and ask what's up? Why are you stopping me?/flagging me down?(slowing me down).
typically when we hitchhike in Dominica we would extend our arms and not give a thumbs up and its usually at the back of a pickup truck or some other truck not someone's private car unless you know that person.

I wouldn't call that embracing the negative. I merely shared a video that left a mark in my memory after tracking the hurricanes of the 2017 season. Many people, at least in my part of the world, forgot that the hurricane impacted Dominica before the devastation in Puerto Rico. I think more people should be aware of this fact. and the context is important. @@mariobaptiste7154 It shouldn't need saying that the community of Dominica got back on their feet. You won't find a ride that easy in Calibishe on a Saturday as it's pretty remote. Sat and Sund, public transportation is pretty rare. If you want to enjoy a decent beachfront, head to Toucari or purple turtle beach/Batibou (which is private owned so you may need to contact 1st). Alot of the gems, like the Emerald Pool, waterfalls or Sulfur spas, you'd need to have a vehicle to access (or a tour guide).

I'm really grateful for the respect you show to natives. I'm a bit older, and traveled as soon as I could at a young age. So that meant: living in the shaodow of WW2 and Vietnam vets traveling ahead of me, and they did not leave a great impression of what americans are. Brash, uncultured, disrespectful, uneducated, unsophisticated, and looking down on natives while handing out life lessons from their high horse (ob not everyone, so hold your fire in the comments, it is a stereotype but like most - it has a foundation that created it.) I felt so embarrassed if anyone asked where I was from because I knew the reputation from native friends. But.....if you think china is communist, you don't know jack about china. It is about as communist, as north Korea is a people's democracy. Just because it is in the name, doesn't mean it is actually true anymore.

China’s helping out countries and places like this under the belt and road initiative. Ultimately china builds up and helps other countries to put them in huge debt they’ll never be able to pay back, then it makes them owe china forever and china can hold that over their heads. It’s really sad.

I was there a week ago for a week and hitched everywhere. Did get a few lectures off locals that I had no rights to come to their country and hitch-hike, I just gave the peace sign and carried on without incident. Only place that was impossible was between Petit Savanne and Delices (that I walked dripping with sweat) due to the road being closed from the bridge collapsing some time ago. Definitely the most hostile of all Caribbean countries I have been to regarding hitching... Also they tried to get me to pay them for taking pictures near the Roseau boat port, but I refused and lectured them I shouldn't have to pay to take pictures of town, this followed with quite aggressive language thrown my way.

China invests in other islands as well. If you want the infrastructure, you go where the investors are I guess.
Why Dominica? Just look at the map. It's the front door of the panama canal, the backyard of Cuba. It's a choke point. That's why China is happy to invest and lay down infrastructure. Added bonus it's very near Venezuela & Guyana . And guess has a huge untapped oil reserve? If it ever comes to a confrontation with the USA. It's a high value strategic point
@dickriggles942
2 ай бұрын
There are a chain of islands there and there are several places you can get through. That's not a very good choke point, lol. China has been influencing other islands too. I believe a lot of this started when they were overfishing the waters there and putting many local fishermen out of business on the islands. They're trying to push their EV buses on many of the islands, etc., but I don't think it's working so well.
@liah2961

But it is a such strategic point, why don't US put investment on this country? Even if it is true that the Chinese people are profiting from these infrastructure projects, the Dominican people can also benefit greatly from them. Without the Chinese construction workers, it is likely that they would never have such good infrastructure in their lifetime. So what's wrong with that?
