Why China doesn't want your waste anymore - BBC News

The UK sends large amounts of waste plastic and paper to China every year.
But a new ban, ordered by the Beijing government, is about to stop most of that - and it could have a significant impact on recycling in the UK.

Your comment is spot on, also most the things westerners buy are made in China, we have no problem buying the stuff but we're perfectly happy to blame every environmental issue on a developing nation, even though per capita the US pollutes 4 times as much as China, and the only reason we're first world nations is because we did the same in the industrial revolution, only we were far worse. China is the biggest investor in green energy.

What the BBC failed to mention is that a when China imported unsorted recycle from western nations a large portion of that is unrecyclable waste, with many toxic substances as people don’t sort their recycling properly. China would gladly take other country’s sorted recycling but that makes no economic sense for anyone, what China was essentially doing was sorting out rich countries’ recyclables.

When I was a truck driver, in the US, I would send a lot of recycling material to China. Mostly paper but also a lot of plastic and even metal. The major thing for this is that China and the US have a huge trade imbalance or deficit, and everything is shipped in containers. They need those containers back to make shipping products here affordable, so they can get the recycle material cheap plus the container holding it back cheap. I used to drop off a load at a warehouse and then drive back to waste management or sometimes a printing company pick up the recycle paper and drop it off at the rail yard, it was a nice 2 for 1 paid very well.

Unlike the leaders in UK recycling who apparently have no idea how to recycle the 400,000 tonnes + plastic waste now that the Chinese have stopped taking it we do know what to do with it. Having developed the technology to make heavy-duty, structurally engineered composites using mixed plastic packaging waste it is ready to be used to turn plastic waste into a valuable resource. The resulting maintenance free composite products can be used in place of tropical hardwood, avoiding the destruction of our rain forests, as well as an ideal replacement for softwood presently treated with carcinogenic creosote, which as a preservative will at last be banned as of May 2018. These and many other products weighing 60% less than concrete and almost unbreakable offer macro-scale ongoing markets to demonstrate why the UK is a world leader in innovation.

What will they build their artificial islands with? Plastics could be turned into building materials & glass back into sand. Let's build an elevator to the moon.

Yes, they dont want the bad garbage, but countries will soon raise the price of good garbage that can be recycled and sold back. It's only a matter of time, as garbage is built up to the point that companies creating these waste will be held accountable. But as consumers..we can stop buying these one use items. It's a vicious cycle we all contribute too.

It’s simply because China’ economy can produce enough garage to recycle and make into products. The focus should be collecting domestic garbage and recycling them more efficiently. It will force the recycling industry to find way to collect more domestic recyclable material.

Because these make in UK trash aren't always pack properly, non-recycleable or low quality trash that can't be use to recycle into new products, all these mean these trash aren't going to be recycle but dump somewhere in China, and result in pollution.
