Now I moved to Canada and I'm very happy to call the Banff / Calgary region my home......well reminds me of my home! It's crazy how similar these places are, despite how far away they are from each other.

I've lived in Calgary Alberta (door step away from Rocky mountains) my whole life. I had no idea of the history. Loved learning about my own back yard.

When I hear Albertans supporting the preservation of the Rockies National Parks then I will respect them. When the left wing NDP Gov't (I am NOT a supporter) tried to preserve the last significant unprotected section of the central Alberta Rockies recently - the area around the village of Nordegg - local Albertans went on a near rampage to keep it unprotected, saying they would be forced out by developers and regulation, now the right wing UCP Gov't is doing everything it can to develop Banff and Canmore even more, and it is now severely overcrowded there in summer.

Actually the Columbia Mountains, in eastern British Columbia Province, run parallel to the Rockies and are often considered geographically part of them, only a valley 5-20 km wide, 2-3 km deep and 1000 km long, called the Rocky Mountain Trench, separates the two. Geologically distinct, the Columbia's extend 1/3 of the way west into BC, and like the Rockies extend north to the Yukon, most travellers do not know the difference when they enter them heading west from the Rockies "proper" just west of Golden BC on the Trans-Canada Highway #1. The Columbia River Mountains are better known by their sub-ranges the Monashees, Selkirks, Purcells, and Cariboos, the famous helicopter skiing and climbing region of the Bugaboo Peaks is in the Purcells, southwest of the town of Golden.

Hey Johnny, the thesis of your video is still solid, but some caveats are really needed about the Rockies being “basically empty” and that the Rockies were finally discovered and explored after Swiss involvement. These are true with the added caveat “for non First Nations peoples”. The First Nations in this area had very active trade routes all across the Rockies for millennia, and indigenous groups as geographically distant as the Hopi travelled in the Canadian Rockies, as evidenced by the wall art in Grotto Canyon, just East of Banff. My recollection is that the CPR surveyors decided on their train route through the Kicking Horse Pass based on advice from a nearby First Nation (though I can’t remember the details offhand, including which nation). The profound Swiss/German connections here are definitely true, but it would be a lie of omission to say they pioneered the exploration of the Rockies.

Cody Siv I don’t think I implied anything about anyone’s “plight”. As I said, the main thesis of this video can stand, but several statements in this video are non-factual/unintentionally misleading. Johnny’s speciality is giving complex situations proper context. He misrepresented a major piece of context, which was a glaring mistake to me, as a local. I figured he’d be interested. Sorry if “lie of omission” was too grandiose for your tastes; it was the phrase I could grasp at the time.

Add Norway for the Pacific Coast and Siberia for the NWT and the Arctic. Maybe add Denmark for Atlantic Canada. Add Ukraine for south Saskatchewan and south Manitoba. Add Finland for northern Sask / Manitoba. Also add Svalbard x 10 for the Arctic islands. Even then there are Canadian regions left out.

As someone from Switzerland I definitely felt right at home in the Canadian rockies. It really just feels like Switzerland but maybe more untouched in the sense that it isn't as populated and also everything seems a lot bigger (lakes, mountains and so on). Michael Chupik wow! You have high valleys! Our is at 460-800m in the valley. Skiable hights are 1500m-3300m. But now many small stations under 2500m suffer from unstable snow coverage. Verbier is well above 2000m for most lifts, so we are good.

I've just realized that I'm missing a huge part of Canadian culture.. and I'm from Toronto. Time to book a trip.

Imo, the Canadian Rockies is by far the most beautiful mountain range in North America, and far outpacing the best that the American Rockies has to offer. I've hiked all over NA, and the only range that even comes close is the North Cascades in Washington (and the Cascade Range in general, through Oregon and Washington), and possibly the Coast Range in Canada and Sierra Nevada in California contesting for 2nd or 3rd place.

Albertan here. I've been out to the Rockies (mainly Banff and Jasper) several times, but I never knew about this Swiss connection. Very cool.

I guess you get a lot of compliments for the great contents of your videos. But I would like to add to that the amazing editing and cinematography you do. The drone takes, slow motion at the perfect times and the clear graphics and maps. Your videos are of high technical quality and this makes them even better to watch. Thanks and nice work!

Fyi: The continental divide is not determined by the division between two continental plates. There are no tectonic plates coming together, where you are. You are just on the North American Plate. A continental divide is determined by a drainage divide, meaning the water on one side will feed into a drainage basin that eventually drains into the lake/ocean/sea. And the water on the other side will feed into a different drainage basin that eventually drains into a different lake/ocean/sea. Love your videos still! Just had to say that. Hope that clears things up. :)

This guy's an idiot and doesn't know what he's talking. The mountains of Canada are not even anywhere CLOSE to the development that Switzerland/the European alps is. Yes, European mountain guides were the prominent guides in the 1800/1900s and did much of the exploring/first ascents of peaks. It wasn't particularly hard to immigrate here and Europe already had a massively developed mountain culture, so this was pretty much a given. Of course you're going to see a lot of influence in our mountains due to that. However, go to Switzerland today and you won't see anything like that in Canada. They have dozens of gondolas going up into the high alpine (even reaching glaciers), cafes literally on high alpine ridges like the Aguille du Midi, hundreds and hundreds of Via Ferrata routes, dense villages only reachable my train in narrow valleys. Nothing like that in the Canadian Rockies.

EEEE this was so cool! I love seeing my homeland through a visitor's eyes. It gives a whole new perspective. Quick question: Did you find anything on indigenous people in the area? I know there were bands of natives throughout the rockies before the Europeans came. I wonder if they had their own ways of navigating mountains etc.

There is a large museum in Banff on the Native or Indigenous People, operated by them. Early explorers often followed Native People's trails and were often guided by them in the early days. Lake Louise itself was known to them, and when Tom Wilson, a local outfitter, was camped in the valley near it and heard avalanches, his Native guides said it was "from the huge snow mountain behind the lake of the small fish". The next day, in 1882, he became the first non-Native to see Lake Louise.

i grew up in toronto and have been in canada my whole life but i have NEVER seen anything like the shots you took of lake louise. I need to save up and go some time that is genuinely breathtaking and impossible to imagine for me as someone whos grown up in cities.

I was in Vancouver recently for 1 month, I grew up there in the '60's and '70's. I hope all the new arrivals there now accept me as a "visible minority" and learn from me as to what made Canada into the country they all wanted to immigrate to, because Canada sure wasn't built from 1608 to 1990 by India, Arabia, or Communist China.

@@j2174 --- The two things you don't know is that the "Liberal (centrist)Trudeau Gov't" was elected by Canadians who live in Toronto, Montreal, the East coast and Winnipeg. Only ONE Liberal was elected between Winnipeg and Vancouver, in a riding that for decades has been right-wing. The other thing you don't know is that the the right wing Harper Gov't was quite pro-immigration, so we didn't have much of a choice, cuz the Left wing NDP is even more so.

Hi Johnny, for my honeymoon we went to Banff and it was amazing. Though I have not had the privilege of going to Switzerland I would describe it exactly the same way: "Switzerland in North America". The Canadian Rockies are incredible. Calgary is a great city with great food: I describe it as Dallas with mountains. It has Dallas's oil, cost of living, and relatively conservative politics, but with amazing mountains. We also took a drive through Jasper National Park (through the pass), and that was an incredible drive. Once you're outside the Canmore-Banff-Louise corridor, the Canadian Rockies feel far more remote than the American ones. The food is also amazing in Banff/Calgary and comparatively cheep. True story we went to Sunshine Village and I injured myself on the first run down, but in any case you're right, the Gondola ride is amazing. The Swiss architecture of Banff is amazing and romantic, especially the Banff Springs Hotel.

I just need to say this because I think frame of reference is important. The Canadian Rockies weren't "basically empty" and never "became discovered". Multiple indigenous tribes existed in the area. Thank you so much for posting this. I was going to comment something very similar. This is a narrative many Canadians, but also non-Canadians take when talking about our history (I imagine it's quite similar in the States too) and it's problematic. I think it's especially important to be cognizant of this kind of language and the history right now when we have been seeing widespread action from Indigenous and Indigenous-supporting groups. While I love Johnny's content and this video is great, I think that's a big thing missing from this video.

At the end of this video Johnny does say that the tourism board of Alberta invited them and Iz said in her video that they sponsored the trip and while Johnny said they were given free rein in terms of content that may have factored into their decision to not include it, if it was discussed. If that’s the case I guess it’s understandable and I feel like Johnny has done a good job covering resistance movements/ local issues in the past in Borders and such. Still would have appreciated a quick mention of native people like. Existing in the area at all tho/ a pre-colonial perspective

Interesting to hear you talk about the Swiss influence in helping Canada with’s its mountain infrastructure. I’m part Swiss from my dad’s side of the family. My parents recently took a vacation to Switzerland to visit my dad’s relatives and shared their experiences. Told me how fondue is a staple of Switzerland and how so very good it is. I need to try it myself one of these days.

When I see a video of a sturdy, picturesque fellow, I know I'm going to have a great time. No exception this time. If you should ever be in Switzerland and in need of a local, I would be happy to help.

Yes I've visited Alberta in the winter and I wore it again and again if I could. So glad you had your family with you.

Hey Johnny, you're well on track to become a "sturdy, picturesque fellow". And I'm Swiss so I know what I'm talking about...right? So disappointed your first fondue was in Canada though :) Interesting to learn that Swiss mountaineers had such an influence in the area. Keep up the good work!

jamesDean1446 but it was in a restaurant called Waldhaus, so probably the proprietors are descendants of those „sturdy pittoresque fellows“.

I spent every spring sking in banff with my family... beautiful video sir, Thank you for doing such an amzing job of showing everyone one of my favorite locations on earth.

As a Canadian who shares your love and passion of Switzerland. I drive the Rockies at least 4 times a year, live fairly close to them and now look at them so differently after seeing your perspective. Was almost taking them for granted. Thank you for making this!!

If I may use one word, your work is awesome. I was born and grew up in the Abyssinian highlands and when I emigrated to Canada the Rockies became my church. I have been climbing for over two decades now and I know for sure I will never run out. The thrill you get throughout the climb, and even more once you reach the peaks is beyond words. I hope you had a chance.

@@MS-37 Canada and Australia (& NZ) have a pretty steady exchange of students and young people. There are visa programs for this. Apparently there are a lot of Canadian surf /water sport instructors in Australia (& NZ) too.

@@e735star I spent a summer with an Aussie who came to Canada on the last year of being eligible for the visa program. He told me he went to school for law, got a job straight outta University, got burnt out, and wanted an adventure. So he did a summer in the pool business with me in the Greater Toronto Area, but of course finished it off in Whistler working for a Ski company just so he could see some real snow before heading back home. Flip side, some fellas I used to work with who were training to be Firemen spent what we in Canada would call a winter down in Australian bush, and they had themselves a blast, or so the stories told led me to believe. Gotta love bilateral programs like that :)

The less attention canada gets the better honestly.

I always thought the Canadian Rockies felt very Swiss influenced, and now I know why. Such a beautiful part of the world.

Great video! I'm an Ontario born baby boomer who went to Alberta in the mid 70's. I love the Rockies, Banff, Jasper, Sunshine and parts between. My wife and I always wondered why things were Swiss this and Swiss that ....I have been through the Alps, thought that they were beautiful, but I was stunned by the magnificence of the Banff area. I was indignant thinking that we as Canadians would compare ourselves to the Swiss Alps, having seen them both, I know we can stand on our own quite well ...thank you. :

Johnny, The scene where you describe the cable car while holding Oli is EXACTLY why i watch you and Iz!. Learning and growing and teaching your kids and others... that’s the life!

As a Swiss person, whenever I go to the Canada I feel like I am at home.

I live in Calgary and spend most of my weekends out in the mountains; hiking and scrambling. I can never get tired or bored of the beauty that is the Canadian Rockies.

@@jankhajuria2689 Think you would have to go to the Government of Canada website to find out the best ways to legally move here. I was born and raised here so I don't know the steps that you would have to take. But we are a very open country and love for anyone to come and live here

I’ve lived in Calgary Alberta my entire life, and I would go to the mountains countless times every year. They were almost routine trips, and I took the for granted. And I never fully appreciated what I have right in my backyard. Thank you Johnny for helping me realize this.

I've always wanted to live in the cold north. Typically I eyeballed Washington and British Columbia but hot damn I will have to visit the cities in Alberta.

Also another reason why the area feels like Switzerland, and is one of the big things in worldbuilding: cultures in similar climates and terrains will come up with similar solutions to the problems faced. The mountains in Alberta are just about the same age as the Alps and at about the same latitude and have a similar climate. So they'd likely develop a similar culture. Of course all the Swiss coming over kinda helped matters :P

What first shocked me about the Rockies in the winter was the silence. I'm from Ontario so I'm used to either the constant roar of the city or the constant rush of one of the Great Lakes. My buddy and I were at Lake Louise, had got there just as it opened so they were loading the chair lifts slowing , one chair at a time , We were about half way up in that dead winter mountain silence when the PA system came alive with a sudden loud cheery voice from the sky " Good morning skiers!! ". Both my buddy and I simultaneously looked up and answered : " Yes, God? "

Hey Johnny, thanks for telling me more about my own country! Missed you all in Banff by about a week, I don't know if you've heard but their economy has been devastated because of the lack of tourism and it looks like a ghost town.

Dude while you're in Canada you gotta come down to Hastings Street in Vancouver. A really family-friendly place with world-class entertainment.

A lot of Canada(wilderness, culture , etc...) haven’t really been “discovered” by the global community or they stay super local where most of Canada doesn’t even know about them. So if you come to visit walk around and get lost or talk to a local as there’s lost of amazing sight all over

I really like your videos, but I couldn't help myself. the mountains were not actually "basically empty" - they were inhabited by Indigenous Canadians who were later forcibly resettled. as much as it's really cool to see this unexpected connection between the Swiss and the Canadian pioneers, it's important to remember that it isn't as simple of a story. I know you were just trying to enjoy yourself with your family, so please don't take this as an criticism of you or anything!

Someone well yes but also no. Having lived in Australia and the US you have no idea how many times I’ve said I was swiss and got asked about my Norwegian neighbors or if I talked Swedish or if that’s where ikea is from etc. A ton of people think Switzerland is Sweden while still knowing of Swiss watches, chocolate and places like the Matterhorn.

I've travelled through the Canadian Rockies a few times and love them. Your video really showed how special they are.

I absolutely LOVE how you explan fondue, withe the communal pot. Here in Switzerland you just have your prefered cheese mix go out and buy it, put the kirsch and garlic in and you got a nice dinner that you eat maybe 3-4 times a year

You really downplayed the beauty of the Rockies and Canada in general

Watching from Bern, Switzerland. I love the Alps and wish I'd spent more time exploring the Rockies when I was in North America... One thing though--as someone who has researched and studied forgotten, omitted and stolen histories, John, you may want to revisit the notion that the Rockies were "empty and unexplored" before Europeans... Just a suggestion.

I think he meant comparatively speaking. I had Italian tourists in my taxi during the 1988 Winter Olympics here in Calgary and they were just awe-struck by the Rockies. They said the European mountains hadn't been like this for at least 1000 years. Meaning they were over-crowded and over-developed.

I live here in Alberta and i think you've done a great job at truly telling the story well, and in a fashion many people can learn about what we have to offer. Its truly an amazing part of the world, both in BC and Alberta, also not just the mountainous part of it but also the rolling hills. subbed because of your effective story telling about history even I didnt know about
