I loved Piranesi. I really liked the main figure who in this book explores his universe and gradually unravels what happened to him. What is different and fun is that you learn about all of this by reading the main character's journal entries. It gave me a lot of food for thought. For me, it was a good book.

oh hahaha I'm so surprised someone would voluntarily read faust, I'm German and I had to read it for school and hated it so much hahaha, there is a lot wrong with it in my opinion (not to ruin your excitement and interest but wanted to mention it because I'm not particularly proud of it being known as traditionally german literature) 😅

If you like Faust you should also read Doctor Faustus by Thomas Mann. Which is a riff off the origional. It a young German musicaian at the beginning of 20th century who is incredibly tallented and wants to get even better, but in his quest he sews the seeds of his own demise. It is an allegory for the German empire before and during the world wars. Thomas Mann is also a cool cat who became an expatriot of Germany when things started to go tits up and worked with the Allies to air anti-Nazi radio messages in German for his other countrymen to hear

I raced through Piranessi when I got it last year, I absolutely loved it. I loved that it was told through journal entries (at least at the start) which makes it easy to read short bits at a time. It starts off a “no plot, just vibes” but the plot does sneak in and then moves pretty rapidly. Thanks for another great video!

omg you reading goethe is so cool!! he was born in my hometown (frankfurt, germany) and my university is actually called goethe university. i haven't read faust in english yet, but i'm so curious how the translation feels because the one i read in german is obviously in old german and not the easiest read phrasing-wise. it's still my most favorite classic and honestly a lot of fun to read!

I’m a first year german student so don’t quote me on this, but because the authors name is spelled “Goethe’s”, usually if an a, o, or u is followed by an “e” you add a umlaut. So it would be Göthe’s works, and pronounced “goo-tays”

  • @helenschu

We actually have to read a lot of Goethes works including Faust in school over here in Germany. We don’t particularly enjoy it but there is worse. Also it’s pronounced like Göthe , I can’t really write down How you would say it though :) I’m quite happy that someone non German is actually interested in classical work because it’s so rare , even over here ! Also there are no too many books ✋✋👆👆👆💪

The Vanishing Half is inspired by Passing by Nella Larsen. I listened to the audiobook for Passing recently and was disgusted by some of the racial discrimination and slurs, but the story itself was one I was label a modern classic in its own right. It was thought provoking and a great conversation starter for even those who don't talk about societal issues when it comes to being Black and Woman in those times.

I was super excited about Malibu Rising and the Vanishing Half and was kind of disappointed. They're not bad by any means I just feel like the descriptions are misleading. I went into Malibu Rising thinking it was going to be a light fun summer read and it is not! It's actually pretty sad and has some heavy topics in it. It's still an amazing story but I would have enjoyed it much more had I known what I was getting into. The Vanishing Half I would argue the book isn't even about the twins like you're expecting it to be but more so their children. It also felt anticlimatic at the end like "that's it?!" so if you don't like those kind of endings I wouldn't reccomend. Both books were beautifully written and I do not regret reading them they were just not what I was expecting and so I wanted to share in case anyone else was thinking of reading them.

I have some fantasy books. I'm not a fantasy person though. Some fantasy books I've read I didn't like but others did. My favorite book genres are sci Fi, suspense/ mystery thriller, Contemporary (YA and adult), memoirs. I like romance. I am reading an urban fiction which is different. I like classics too.

As I was watching this, I actually discovered some other books I wanted to read on GoodReads. You see, this editor Rhonda Parrish has this series of anthologies with titles such as Scarecrow, Sirens and Fae. I personally get a lot out of them, and so far my favourite out of that collection is Fae. I discovered that she had another series of collections called her Elemental series. And they are Fire: Demons, Dragons and Djinns; Earth: Giants, Golems and Gargoyles; Air: Sylphs, Spirits and Swan Maidens; Water: Selkies, Sirens and Sea Monsters. And oh...I am very tempted
