Why Britain should scrap the TV tax

Mark Littlewood of the Institute of Economic Affairs argues the case for scrapping the TV licence and the BBC moving to a subscription-based model such as Netflix or Amazon Prime. Littlewood argues the TV tax is regressive, affecting the poorest families most

Please, please, I BEG you, don't destroy the BBC. Look, as a woke lefty liberal snowflake I accept that we must now leave the EU. You will get your Brexit and the country will be left poorer, both financially and spiritually, as a result. I also accept that you lot have voted in an extreme right wing government, a government that is going to attack the poor with a savagery we have never before witnessed. But for some reason it is this latest attack on the BBC that is upsetting me most. The BBC is the most precious thing this country possess, the envy of the world. Once it is gone, it is gone. Please, don't let Dominic Cummings destroy the cultural fabric of this country even further.

There is no law that says you must have a TV license, even if you have a TV. The Law says you must have a TV license if you watch LIVE broadcasts(any channel) or BBC Iplayer. So if you only watch catchup TV or subscription TV like Netflix or Amazon prime you are safe and don't need a license. And if you are naughty and do watch live TV without a license and a TV inspector(Goon) calls, Just say "Not today" and close the door, they have no more right to enter your property without your consent than the milkman. Don't engage in conversation with them, don't let them onto your property, don't sign anything. Detector Vans are a lie, nobody has EVER been convicted on detector van evidence, its a scare tactic. And finally Bin any letters they send you, don't even bother reading them, straight in the Bin unopened. P.S. I have not bought a TV license in 25 yrs.

They WILL try plug your telly in AND tune it in then BAM they gotcha . However, if you film them in your home , they cant plug the telly in or turn it on / get a signal then this PROVES them in the wrong. It PROVES your not capable of receiving any channels and it can be used in court AGAINST them . It has been done . Alternatively, just dont answer the door even with a warrant in place , . Boris isn't in charge, you numptie. Boris is only the puppet but the puppet master will deliver and destroy the bipartite union of kingdoms called The United Kingdom forever. Are you idiots blind and deaf? At the last general election, (December 2019), the people of Scotland voted for the SNP to the extent that they kicked out 7 of the 13 sitting London Tory MPs sitting in Scottish seats, left London Labour with just one sitting Scottish MP and removed the London LibDems leader as an MP. The SNP won 81% of the available Scottish seats and subsequent opinion polls indicate their support is still rising. This is a recent YouGov opinion poll but it has been bettered by other polls since then. It is not a one off but represents a trend:- Scottish Parliament constituency ballot: SNP 54% (+8) Conservatives 23% (-3) Labour 12% (-2) Liberal Democrats 8% (-3) Greens 2% (+1) Scottish Parliament regional list ballot: SNP 45% (+8) Conservatives 23% (-2) Labour 12% (-2) Greens 8% (n/c) Liberal Democrats 7% (-3) Scottish voting intentions for next UK general election: SNP 51% Conservatives 25% Labour 15% Liberal Democrats 6% Greens 2% Then the republicans in Northern Ireland won a majority of the votes in N.I. but failed to win enough seats only by reason of not having stood candidates in all available constituencies. Now if you cannot see that the writing is on the wall for the end of the United Kingdom the rest of the World can. Scotland will end the bipartite union of kinggdom's and Northern Ireland will start the break up of the Kingdom of England by reuniting Ireland. This will only be further accelerated by the UK Exit from the EU.

This is a solid economic and free-market argument for why the BBC license fee needs to be scrapped and I agree. However, I think the thing that many people (including me) object to about the BBC is that they have in the last century received this guaranteed income via the tax/licence fee payer because they had the responsibilities of being a national broadcaster. News gathering, public information, minority interest programming, balanced and fair coverage of national politics and general entertainment. Being a tax-payer funded national broadcaster entails certain responsibilities. I remember 25 years ago the BBC did largely fulfill its special role and even though there was always a slight left-of-centre metropolitan bias they tried their best to be balanced and to represent the whole nations views, cultures and interests. Today's BBC is an utter disgrace. The way they have covered Brexit, the destruction of beloved shows like Dr Who, constant woke virtue signalling and an increasingly anti-British condescension of anyone who has traditional or conservative viewpoints. The BBC has become a propaganda wing of far left-leaning, sneering elitist virtue signallers who mock anything they see as 'unwoke'. It's a real disgrace and a real shame. The BBC does not deserve to be protected from the free market anymore. Make Dr. Who for the audience, not for scoring social and political agenda points. Same with news......make it balanced and objective (not pushing an ultra woke liberal narrative).

Never paid it (not required , I use Netflix and KZread. If I want to watch a match or a fight I'll go to a sport bar with my mates) and still been getting letters from them every other month trying to use scare tactics. Like how they put "urgent letter" in red writing and use terms like "we know you don't have a tv license, expect a visit from us soon" or how rather than appreciating the fact there's people out there not eligible to pay for a tv licence they send you letters like you are a criminal. They don't even know who you are they just have a database that pumps out millions of letters addressed to "dear sir or madam" they have the nerve to ask you for a payment when they don't even know your name or your gender or if you even need to pay it. Think of the amount of people paying it just to avoid being harassed with letters or unannounced visits. If I sent dozens of letters to someone asking for a payment I'm not entitled to I'd be sent to jail for extortion. All a bunch of rats that prey on the elderly and use scare tactics to milk a few coins every month from gullible civilians. But then go milk bottle white whenever someone under the age of 50 answers the door and tells them to gtfo. There's some streets they won't even go on because they will get abuse hurled at them at every door they knock on. They are powerless.

BBC programming beyond the News and Sport (and Top Gear if you're blind to quotas quietly being met after they finally got rid of the 3 ManBrit team) is formulated for Women, their daughters and 'persuaded' sons. Dramas always have a certain bitterness, denigration of men. Men of a particular identity, mind you. The British men still watching the BBC, and indeed ITV, channel 4 etc. without becoming even slightly perturbed are demoralised, their numbing is complete. Such insidious subliminal messaging is extremely damaging to social cohesion, it's quite evil when you think about it, the narrative/agenda being pushed from the very top of this massively bloated & powerful corporation can only lead to negativity.

paul hoskin "freeview" is ironic because none of it it free to view if it is being broadcast. The only free TV is catch up TV where you are watching it, say a day after it has been broadcast for the first time (repeats still count as being broadcast "live".)

Scrap the fee if they want to get paid they can have adverts and sell programs like everyone else. It's not like being public subsidised has made them impartial. Their behaviour in the last 3 years has been appalling.

I thought the "oi! You got a license for that TV?" Was a beauracracy joke. Didn't realize that it was an actual thing. Britain isnt becoming 1984, its been there for decades.

There’s a scene in Blackadder the Third where Edmund is asking Le Comte de Frou Frou if he would like to earn some money and the Comte replies: _”No I wouldn’t. I would like other people to earn it and then give it to me”_ Ironic that a BBC comedy sums up the licence fee so nicely.

Wendy Mudkins . Doesn't matter if you don't watch any bbc channels if you are watching TV as it is being broadcast you have to pay for a licence, whether it's sky, virgin media or any other channel. But i agree with you that you should be able to watch what you want with whatever provider you want WITHOUT having to pay the TV licence fee on top of your subscription.
