Why Bob Taylor is a Saint

Baxter and Jonathan talk about why Bob Taylor's influenced more guitar brands than just Taylor Guitars. You may be surprised on how much Taylor works with other brands to help them solve their complex problems.

I have a 1991 Taylor 410 that is beat to Sh$t, cracks, dents, back of neck sanded to raw wood , and it sounds FN amazing! I believe it was created in a similar style with the Martin D18 bracing, so it doesn’t sound like a Taylor of today’s voicing at all nor does it play like one. String through pin less bridge, and it just keeps giving songs to me like a bottomless well. Everyone that see’s it smirks until they pick it up and play it, then they offer to buy it from me. I’m all about the spirit of the Taylor community and philosophy of world consciousness. Side note, I just bought a Gibson J45 and it’s hands down the best sounding acoustic I’ve ever owned. Think early James Taylor(see what I did there)

In the "old" days, Bob used to run his own tours at Taylor, giving everyone a blank or the sound hole, branded with the logo. I don't know who else would let their workers, upon finishing their first year with the company, would sanction them build their own guitar (just not using the Taylor name)!

2021 Taylor Guitars Update: Bob Taylor, Kurt Listug, and Andy T. Powers met late last year and as Bob explained tonight on Taylor Guitars Primetime (KZread, Tuesdays at 6 p.m. Pacific), they're getting older and in thinking about what would be best for the future of the company, decided to give ownership of the company to the employees. In this evening's "Rapid Fire Q & A with Bob Taylor" a question about what was the first concert he ever attended, led into a conversation about his asking the other two partners in the shop for the time off, and that Bob and Kurt always clocked in and out of their company. Bob Taylor's book, Guitar Lessons is an absorbing read, and worth a Part Two, which he may begin writing shortly as he wrote the first book in order that the "Guitar Lessons" learned not be forgotten in "turning a passion into a business." Bob is quick to say that guitar making is a collaborative industry, as so many luthiers learn from each other. I'd advise anyone interested in Taylor Guitars and the future of the instrument to watch this (and every) episode of Taylor Guitars Primetime on their channel. Watch the factory tour videos and see how many of the tools Bob innovated are used by other makers and Bob's early adoption of the Fadal CNC machines came out of visiting with one of his luthier friends during a tour of the Taylor Guitars factory. Looking at the machinery, including a gang saw that Bob had repaired in order to cut fret slots, Bob asked how they did it. Oh, we use the Fadal CNC machine, which replaced three separate woodworking machines on the floor, improving efficiency. Bob said he always had to ask before spending any of their scarce funds, and it will be no different since Kurt, Andy and Bob have transferred ownership to the employees of Taylor Guitars. The future of the company, including those principles of social and resource responsibility and frugality will continue, so I feel as they all do, that the future of the company is assured. Since the Tecate and El Cajon factories are so close to each other, manufacturing processes and quality assurance will continue with the same high standards. I do not mind paying a bit more for products and customer support from this amazing company.

Bob Taylor is the true definition of a CAPITALIST. He understands that in order to sustain his business, keep people employed, and make money, he had to become a conservationist also. He realized that if he exploited all of the ebony (for example) in the world without giving a second thought to where it comes from, he would eventually put himself out of business. Therefore, he now works with entities and people all over the world to make sure that the materials he needs to build guitars will be available for many, many more years. That is how a true capitalist thinks and how true capitalism works.

Another reason to consider Taylor Acoustics is the way the attach the neck, it is basically a bolt-on neck with a dovetail. As such 40+ years from now when that guitar needs a neck reset (like most all vintage guitars do) it is a simple matter to remove and re-set the neck to factory specifications. So much easier to do than steaming off the neck, especially so if the instrument is vintage and worth as much as a new car!

I heard that Sitka spruce is being harvested faster than it can mature, much as was Adirondack spruce before it. What are they going to make them with once that's all gone? I know they can use western cedar (oddly it's mostly European manufacturers like Furch and Lowden that are mostly using that while American builders use spruce) but that has an even more limited range than Sitka. Good spruce is from 250-year-old trees; what's the situation with red cedar?

well it seems Bobs guitar taylorship aims and targets to win partners and connect them to his ‚family‘. dark ebony is needed on a L5, Les Paul Customs, Top Martins, and basically every real manufacturer based on oldschool tradition and values (rare woods, even koa, braz, eb can be harvested ecologically responsible without cutting down almost every tree at once and starting to breed!) somewhere needs this ingredient. Bob chose a clever pr-effective, almost scientific path to do his best for the whole guitar sector. Surely he’s hoping for expanding his good intended work to be in cooperation and partnership with the entire guitar luthier field soon 🤝 subjective: concerning the actual Taylor guitars, I can’t say that much. Based on appearance, i never got attracted too much; i miss the dirty edges in sound and build. 🤷🏽‍♂️ I’d go advanced humming all the way : ) A friend, David S., singer songwriter/ + awesome acoustic folk tapper here in AUT, once got a Breedlove donated, he stated ‚the guitar is very good‘. Fazit: i like people working together and sharing help; but, I criticize when someone tries to get cooperative togetherness through controlling tools or resources. Don’t get distracted by shiny finishes and nice ceos 2much peepz. I get distracted by the beauty curves of a finish cracked big ol mama crafted from natural sourced ‚happy‘ wood unstandardisized, unique. I like ur fun vids 🤪 ps... 4sure Bob does a nice job2!
