Why Birds Preen Each Other - Mutual Preening (Mini Documentary)
Үй жануарлары мен аңдар
Preening is a big part of a bird's day. Having healthy feathers that are in tip top condition is a matter of life and death for birds. Every bird has to keep up on their feathers but some birds preen one another too. This type of preening is known as mutual preening or "allo-preening".

Oh, yea, that crow that was getting preened looked like he was at a spa....his whole body seemed to relax and look calm. Wonderful and enlightening video, Lesley! Thank you!

I saw another video, it is called pet crow at two years. It is about someone who has a pet crow. And at the end of the video, at the times from nine minutes until the end of the video, the owner pets her crow. She pets him and scratches his head. And he does exactly the same moves. If you want to see more, you could have a look at that. It is very funny, the crow pokes the owner with his beak when she stops scratching him.
Birds preening is like us getting ready for the day, it just proves that not only humans can try to be in their tip-top shape. Thanks Lesley :)
I have a 9 year old male cat who is just got addicted to my computer from your videos. He never paid attention to my computer in his first 9 years. About a month ago I showed him how you hand feed the birds. Now he is right by my side every time I go on the computer! He just stares contently at the screen, sometimes I have to hold him back if he wants to bat the screen with his paw. He just 'liked' this preening video!
Very beautiful recordings!

This is why my pet bird loves scitches 😂👍
The crows... Adorableness overload! And I love being able to see those gorgeous Crows close up! Thank you for your beautiful work, Lesley!
Our mourning doves out this way in Arizona are often seen preening themselves in a shady area.
A nice couple of crow! Love it!
Lesley, I don’t know how I missed this one! I guess I need to go back through and watch each one just in case I may have missed any.😉😁. What amazingly beautiful shots you have of those sweet crows. The sweetest video I’ve ever seen of crows and it proves just how sweet they really are. The gentleness between those two made my heart swell. How I love the Crows. I’ve been feeding 3 since the springtime of 2018. Healthy seeds, nuts and fruit, cooked chicken meat and skin for them. For several months now, between 6:30 am and 7:00 am they come to a tree in our yard that sits directly in front of my art room window where I sit and drink my morning coffee. (How do they know that) They caw and caw for me to bring out their breakfast. When I walk out the door they all start cawing loudly and fly from tree to tree, one will hold a conversation with me. They are beautiful and smart birds. They seem to fear people, I can only go out alone and without my husband for example, which makes me think people may have mistreated them throughout time. That makes me sad. If only more people would take the time to sit and watch them and learn about them they would realize how gentle they are and how funny they can be. Thank you for what you do, for bringing us such lovely videos of all these beautiful birds and for educating people about them. Wishing you a blessed wintertime from upstate New York near the Catskill Mountains. Caroline

Caroline - I missed this one and others that I'm now finding I haven't viewed - don't feel bad! In a way I like going through them slowly as it gives me something to enjoy and look forward to. The Blue Jays in my area are the same as your crows - I think they know they can trust a certain person plus the person may have food🙂- Stephanie
Hi Lesley - Thanks for this video👍 Yes they can truly enjoy another bird preening the itchy new feather shafts that are hard to reach. My 2 parrots are like that, but now one enjoys it more than the other one. They both like me gently preening around their neck, head and cheeks. 😊 - Stephanie
they r all so cute
Great video. You captured some really interesting bird behaviour.

Im sitting with my chicken, her name is muffin and shes my little buddy! She will pull at my clothes which i thought was a little odd and thought it was just the colors and print on my shirt, but i realized she was probably trying to preen me! She was sitting on my shoulder and pulling at my hair from the roots, and would pull her beak away like how she would with her feathers. Only thing is that my hair would get stuck in her beak. Haha i never thought id ever be preened by a chicken before! But i guess this means im a part of the flock now! I spend a lot of time with my chickens, and theyre all really tame and sit in my hammock with me from time to time. They all seem to enjoy my company, but muffin i think loves seeing me the most! Haha! Its very special to feel included by an animal and have it trust you and have it think of you as its family ❤️
You still seem to impress us and make our day bright :) keep it up!

Great video, as always. You're really good at this, Lesley. Two questions: (1) What is that whitish lid that I see when crows blink? Is that something unique to crows? I don't recall seeing it with other birds. (2) Do you have a favorite bird? (Can't believe I've never thought to ask you that last one before.) Thanks. -Scott.

My pet cockatiel takes great care of her feathers. Every time she visits with me, she is so relaxed and even seems to preen the same areas. Then again, she is a bit of a ditz...
I really learned a lot for my kids vertural school

Hey, would it be at all possible for me to use part of this clip in a compliation for an independent project which will hopefully be used as a massaging advert. I am not affiliated with any company.

Oh not at all Lesley. I was only curious as to if there is a way to determine the gender, beside watching their behavior. Crows are not pretty but among the smartest of birds and always attract my attention. But then, lets take the opportunity and let you know that how much I appreciate all that you do in providing some of the BEST available bird related clips on KZread. Keep up the excellent job and please always remain the Bird Nerd that you are. Thanks for sharing, dearly.

My Zebra Finch is over preening his wife to the point that she has bald patches. Any one know how I stop this? Great video by the way.
