Why Backups Aren't Disaster Recovery

In this video, CBT Nuggets trainer Jeff Kish explains the role backups should play in disaster recovery. Not all backups are created equal. Some backups might be helpful to respond to disasters, but not all. And creating a backup isn't the same as having a disaster recovery plan. Watch Jeff explain the technologies and approaches to backups and disaster recovery.
You might be settling in to hear that having a backup is never an alternative to robust disaster recovery strategies and technologies. But that's not the case. There are circumstances when having a backup is perfectly reasonable alternative to the sophistication, expense and investment of a robust disaster recovery solution. But the key is that it depends on many variables.
For starters, backups have inherent limitations. They can take a long time to recover data, there's the risk involved with compressing them or the expense of storing them, and the question of intervals. Jeff explores the variables to consider when thinking about different backup solutions, as well as different network and data types that affect whether or not you should rely on backups for disaster recovery.

Backups can never be ignored, DR practice not only limited to recover site level failure. It can be any event when data/app is not available. Backup technology has matured enough to provide virtual mount features (except tape based but anyways best suited for archival not for hot backup set). Cyber threats like Rensomware needs old copy of backup to avoid paying money to intruder. Even 15mins unavailability can be great loss to organization's, it's all depend on data and type of org. Compliances are different issues. Backup with restore tests + Disaster Recovery with drills is must to have strategy.
