Why Atlanta May Become NASCAR’s Weirdest Track

Спорт

The 3rd NASCAR weekend at the reconfigured Atlanta Motor Speedway has been put in the books and with it is pack racing, storylines, and even an unconventional walk-off by Josh Williams. With that being said though I find the future of this track intriguing as I am not sure that it will necessarily keep the pack style superspeedway racing it has been re-designed for. This is why Atlanta may become NASCAR’s weirdest track.

I remember Kurt Busch said something about "running unrestricted." Once safety improves in these cars I'd love to see them experiment with running the current short track package, if the racing doesn't improve with the ST package, then just let em rip around Atlanta with the intermediate package.

I used to really not like Atlanta because of the extremely worn surface and dreaded. I'm not a big fan of the pack racing, but I like that this track encourages attrition, and if the racing gets more spread out due to the surface aging, we could probably see 1970's type racing; which I really look forward to.

As an Indycar fan in addition to NASCAR, the current set up of Atlanta all but rules out Indycar ever racing there because there is no way the current crop of Indycar drivers would want to race there given the speeds that could be achieved (essentially it would be exactly like when CART tried to race at Texas in 2001). This despite the fact that Indycar needs more ovals on its schedule. The only way Indycar could race in Atlanta is at Road Atlanta which is one of the best road courses this country has.

I think you nailed it. We are already seeing that handling matters at AMS and as the surface begins to age and lose grip, that's only going to continue. What we might end up with is the old 70s-00s era Daytona/Dega type races where sure the draft was an important aspect but you had to have your car handling well in order to go fast. It wasn't just luck, there was very much some skill involved. That'd be great. The other possibility is that we do end up with some sort of hybrid track or the sport decides to go back to unrestricted racing on the track and we get really fast racing where multiple grooves are an option again. Nobody really knows for sure, but there's nothing wrong with AMS being what it is right now. I don't want every 1.5 going this route for sure. But AMS in its current form is fine.

To be fair, the style of racing now at Atlanta is almost like the early-mid 2000s plate racing but with a smaller bubble between cars, you can make moves, going 3 wide will make you looser than a 2 dollar hooker, and there are huge runs that can generate but a skilled leader can find ways to stall out the cars behind. I’m just happy the drivers can pull out of line and actually make spots up and not instantly fall back making a completely one line race

It makes no sense why they would reconfigure the track to have less banking than Talladega and Daytona if they were aiming for sustainable pack racing. It would need to have the highest banking of any NASCAR track. They're going to have to start slowing the cars down when the track loses grip to keep this style of racing going. It's going to be a rough next 10 years with this track until they finally give up on the pack racing and attempt more traditional intermediate racing again.

The race this weekend totally changed my mind on this reconfiguration. I was bitching about how I did not think it was possible to run a whole race on this track without it looking like, well, the Xfinity race. I wouldn't say Sunday was the most fun I've ever had watching stock car racing, but it was everything it needed to be to shut me up. They proved they can run a clean, competitive race on it. And as much as I always want more racing, 400 is the way to go here. In the future I think if they want to optimize the racing, they probably have to tune the package up a little differently, but whatever the case I hope they don't go chasing solutions or start trying to curate a specific kind of racing too quickly, and just let it run and see how it goes.

"They can", I'd be careful using those words to change your mind. They can make it through Daytona and Talladega without wrecking but we all know how that usually ends. I think the video nails the intrigue with how this track is going to evolve. Atlanta seems to have horrible wear to the track surface for some reason. It is not difficult to imagine that the grip needed to race side by side in a pack probably isn't going to last much longer. The Xfinity guys showed that the track can still be a total disaster. Hopefully that was just a case of way too much inexperience on the track at one time.

I think in the next couple of years, they're going to take the restrictor plates/superspeedway package off of the cars, and have them race around the current configuration with the full horsepower package. (Wishful thinking of it going back to 750 or even 900) The mock superspeedway thing seems to be working for the short term, but I think eventually, it's going to crack through the thick, empty skull of someone in NASCAR's executive team, "Hey, maybe we should listen to the drivers." And we'll have probably the best Intermediate Track in NASCAR.

I hope the loud minority doesn’t ruin this new track. This racing will help grow the fans and money. There is a reason Daytona and Talledaga are so popular with fans. Fans are only angry with those types of races when there favorite driver gets wrecked out. If Chase Elliot was racing and won, people would have loved it.

    @tamezzodiac2862

    Жыл бұрын

@@crocidayle yes it is because even if it is way less the cars are so similar that it makes any small amount of dirty air extremely bad. It's true. The way you improve dirty air is when cars are less similar to each other. When teams actually have adjustments they can make. The teams need areo adjustments. Sure, you can take away dirty air and it helps some my removing areo, but now we are at a point where no amount of areo you take off will fix it. The last car we at least could take the spoilers down and it helps significantly until they killed the balance in 2017 and took too much off. No one has realized dirty air is something that never will go away. The reason it used to not be as big of a issue though years ago is because every car was different from panels to even the set ups. Teams had so many options and so teams made downforce in different places then others. Teams also combined that with mechanical grip. Once the cars got more similar we saw this slow incline with teams kinda maxing out their abilities of what they can do with speed so the gen 6 kinda lost a ton of mechanical grip because you couldn't really make the areo work with it. Now with the gen 7 the cars have mechanical grip so easy to achieve that there is a huge limit there, and then they are all so similar that it made the issues the gen 6 has a million times worse. It's gonna keep getting worse the more teams learn too. Dirty air doesn't have to be looked at as this negative thing. Actual, when used properly it can be an advantage. Making cars handle worse in clean air then dirty air would be the real step in the right direction, instead of actually trying to eliminate physics that are not possible to get rid of. The teams need more freedom. They are in a extremely tight box, and when anyone finds an advantage they will run away with the wins because no one can really catch up unless they figure out exactly what that team is doing. Managing a car needs to matter again and that easily can be achieved if teams are pushing the limits again. We have really not many natural dnfs anymore and these races with the lengths are so pointless because saving ur stuff means nothing. Tires also mean nothing and unfortunately haven't even back when we had 15 inch rims. Good year doesn't make good tires, and u can't make a good oval tire out of a 18 inch rim. There was way more play with a smaller rim. Saying the dirty air is not worse tho is a lie because in terms of actually size and stuff it is not as bad, but in terms of how sensitive the cars are too it, then I don't think we have ever been this bad with areo sensitivity. Sure, stuff like pinching a guy down and spinning them is gone, but I've seen many of times a guy behind a guy and just crash cause they got areo loose with the diffuser, or how hard it is to pass now. It's never been harder.

Never been a fan of pack racing - but this has the potential to be closer to "old Michigan" once the surface ages. Once they have to go to a non-superspeedway tire that wears - handling will matter. Old Michigan had HUGE draft impact on the straights - then they fanned out on the turns only to come together again with draft assisted runs. I do think ATL could end up there as long as they don't monkey with the surface (PJ1, resurfacing, etc.)

Either create more speed with the car (Make Atlanta and a few others trial races for a hybrid engine that does 750-800hp before going full time next year) or reduce handling (grooved tires, small ass spoiler or whatever else.) to make handling more of an issue. Making Atlanta a Daytona Jr ain't it.

I dunno man. After Truex fell out of the top ten in the last stage he seemed to be stuck around 20th the rest of the race. Door Bumper Clear also was talking about it being hard to pass. In years past plate racing seemed to always have good amounts of sudden position changes and cars getting shuffled out but there was hardly any of that in this Atlanta race.

you may not like it and say most or everyone disliked it, but I wanted a repave and loved the idea of the new configuration. What we have now is awesome, and it'll just get better regardless of whether or not it is pack racing or just faster 1.5-mile racing

I am looking forward to seeing what this track will become and while I wasn’t a huge fan of the Atlanta racing on the old surface and I liked the first year racing this year’s was not good the last 40 laps were if they can find a way to make that happen the entire race it will be a great thing but if it goes the other way I will start hating this track like I did Auto Club but that’s my opinion

I’m alright with the reconfiguration to super speedway style racing. I didn’t mind the old Atlanta, but I really want the old oval Atlanta back.

People don’t understand that Josh wasn’t mad at the track he was mad at NASCAR, I talked to him on Sunday and he said NASCAR made him sit in there hauler until every other Xfinity team left the track. They didn’t let him have his phone or clothes to change data from the fire suit. Josh said that he really likes Atlanta because it gives him the ability to compete for a good finish in the car he drives.

Regardless of what you think, daytona/talladega have some of the best finishes in Nascar history and that’s a product of pack racing. Atlanta is gonna age so well.

I was just glad to only see a couple of crashes and to see them race for the win instead of crashing the whole field at the end. Maybe they can start doing that at Daytona and Talladega now but I doubt it lol

I like your idea but SMI wanted their own superspeedway. I believe they'll try to keep it as one as long as possible. I'm not a fan of Atlanta Superspeedway but don't hate it. Even with your proposed idea, Atlanta should still only have 1 date on the schedule.

Atlanta is not a superspeedway. It acts like one, but that's only because the surface is only a year old and the track has more grip to allow that style of racing.

It doesn't make any sense to me why Michigan hasn't worn in, since every other asphalt road in Michigan is full of potholes within 5 years. Whatever they did to that track, they need to do to the rest of the state's roads!!

The fans that love it don't love racing. They love crashing. A good race to those fans is a wreckfest. If the leader pulls away more than 1 second, the race is bad. It's not about actual racing to them. Just making sure everyone is super close and close to wrecking
