For me personally when I get called “talented” I get mix feelings on it depending on who the person is. For example if it’s a artist that’s better than me then I feel like it’s supposed to no mockery even if it isn’t supposed to. When other non artist call me it, I feel like I should be doing much better then currently.

I saw a quote: "talent is overrated, practice isn't". A lot of people have different opinions on being called "talented".. No one was born on earth knowing how to draw, some of us just loves to draw and is determined to make it better and better. I am no artist, this is just what I've observed when I was watching my little sister so our opinions might vary :)) this ramen is my girlfriend I would also like to participate because my little sister is an aspiring artist! I've literally just been called "talented" by one of my mutuals that never shows any real interest in my drawings on twitter... I used to feel honored in the past when someone would drop that word, but now it kinda feels like a slap to the face ^^" Especially since I'm watching so many art tutorials and webinars to increase my skill and abilities; putting in 6-8 hours for a single drawing at least :/ I'd rather have people acknowledge my hard work and progress than just giving this semi fake pep talk... And yet I hardly get any traction while people keep throwing that word around all the time... I personally really dont like it even if the person that says it has no ill intentions 🥺💜 Thanks for the video. Very interesting topics 💯

As one of my old animation professors used to say, you shouldn't put as much weight on praise given by people who don't do art because they can't see your flaws and give you an ego that'll crash and burn when in the industry. Not his exact words but it's been seven years and that's just how I remember it. You gotta put the hard work in. As someone who isn't happy with her art pieces very often I appreciate it when others find my work decent even if I don't. Being called "talented," however... I think that's a bit of a stretch. If it were with my singing or acting I'd accept that. But my art has taken me roughly 6 years and I'm STILL not a hundred percent happy with it some of the time. If someone says "You're really coming along. Congrats on your progress" or something similar about my artwork I appreciate it more simply because I have been working hard to improve. This video has a very good explanation on this subject and I appreciate the views given. Also your art is beautiful and I loved watching your process!

This ramen is girlfriend 🍜🌹✨ A very good topic to discuss about! I feel like people may or may not have a talent towards something when they are young for example maybe art but I also believe that it fades away if you don’t work on it so in the end everything still comes back to the person’s hard work itself. That is probably why I do feel bad when I even see other artists that I know worked very hard to improve their skills get comments like “you’re naturally gifted” or “you’re so lucky to be born with this talent.” But at the end of the day it depends on the person and how they perceive it and they honestly might be positive about it and that’s definitely more than okay. It’s natural to have different opinions.

One side I haven’t really seen explored very often is that “talented” gets thrown around so much it could start to lose its meaning. I personally don’t like being called/to,d my work is cute because to it’s a “nothing word”. Which just means it’s something people say when they don’t have anything to say. I know most people mean well when they say it, but seeing the solo word “cute” on a picture I took hours completing just makes it feel like all that work was wasted. But that’s honestly just me and with that word As far as talented, I do believe in talent, but past a certain point I think talent becomes a skill. But, but like you said, you can’t really prove whether or not talent actually exists

I totally understand this! It’s so frustrating even though I know they’re not trying to do that to me but I don’t know how to respond either other than just replying with a very very very awkward thank you...? Then I may seem rude but I actually feel that way. I feel even more worse when people actually think that I draw well just because I have the talent and the only reason they’re not is that they weren’t born with it and unlike what you said about your results it’s completely opposite here. Many of my fellow classmates just say that I’m smart and that’s why I get better results but I’m well aware of the fact that without studying I would be much worse off. THAT’S WHY IT LOWKEY TICKS ME OFF 😭 Trying to absorb the fact that people actually think that someone is good at what they do just because they were born with it is really sad. YES exactly!! i’ve been told the same thing re: intelligence and then natural success without effort coming as a result, and it’s like,,, having a naturally easier time with a thing does not mean that doing that thing subsequently requires no work. it’s a base upon which to develop knowledge, practice, and skill, not a free card that gets you through life without trying ;; i know no one means it insultingly, too, which always makes me feel bad about being frustrated by it lmao

Art is just like any other course or study. You work hard, you research, you practice, and you understand as you work on it. You give in blood, sweat and tears to sharpen it to be a blade you can be proud of. You don't really see that many people say 'You're such a talented chef!' . Being a chef means knowing the ingredients which you would throw together to make a dish and how each of them would affect each other as well as said dish. Art is the same Actually, most occupations and hobbies are the same. You give in persistent effort and you gain eventual results. You may have talent, the ability to analyse something's structure and know how you wish to recreate it better than most, but your art still started as a wobbly, disfigured atrocity before you chiseled it into something clear and majestic. You might have been talented for all we know, but in the end, it was only hard work and determination that brought you this far. On another note, this piece of art you drew in the video is absolutely adorable!! I love it so much! Keep up the good work, you can do it!! ...... I know the elements of an apple though: round, red, has that little stem. But I can't see the apple. Maybe a faint figure if I think hard about it, but more than anything I've personally memorized the individual elements then proceed to put them all together.

Even if you work for something it doesn't change the fact that it eventually became a talent of yours that distinguishes you from normal people who have no skills.

This ramen is my girlfriend. Listennn I actually 100 agree with this perspective. I don't really like being called 'talented' because not only do I not feel talented, I feel like the amount of time, effort, and practice that went into my hobby gets delegitimized. It gets especially frustrating because my 'talent' isnt on a professional level yet despite my practicing and thus makes me realize I still have time and room to grow but that just referring to it as 'talent' makes it seem like a stagnant thing. It may not be intended as an insult, but it comes across as this backhanded compliment.

When they then start to ask “how did you get like that? is it from pure talent?” it gets too much. I AM SO GLAD YOU HAVE MADE THIS VIDEO! I have been stuck with this topic in my head every night whenever someone calls me talented at art. Talent exists, but I don’t believe that art is. Things like singing and gymnastics or etc. would be talent because talent is something you’re born with and are naturally good at. If you’re born just not flexible and stiff you wouldn’t be able to bend backward. Or maybe you have a limited range with your voice. Art can include talent, but that can still turn into skill. Singing and gymnastics is definitely a skill too with practice, but to unlock that skill you’ll most likely need to start with a little talent. Talent + practice = skill

So, I got to the mention of not seeing things in your mind and wanted to throw my two cents in before I forgot. I've been an artist since I was a child and I have much the same thing, I can sometimes picture very simple things in my mind, but my minds eye is mostly incredibly blank, I can't even fathom what it would be like to be able to picture things clearly. To adjust for this, essentially instead my mind focuses on how it would go about trying to draw things, and then I sketch things so that I can see them in front of me tangibly. References are a huge help too. I pretty much agree with the idea of talent not existing. I believe everyone is capable of learning art so long as their belief and interest in it is strong enough to carry them through some of the inevitable difficulties. From some stuff I've seen, when someone is first learning art, their mind and the way they think tries to get in the way of their improvement. Yet for every single person the way it does so is just a little bit different. everyone learns at different paces, and some understand some things quicker or slower than others. Every artist will reach problems in their work and process that they need to solve to continue. To me, art is this massive mental collection of microskills that build and build on eachother. So becoming an artist in this case is less of a "you have the ability or you don't" and more of a "how many of these skills can you build, and how are you going to overcome the ones you get stuck at?" I don't think some people that don't draw quite understand that we too were once at a point where we felt we could only draw stick figures well. The only difference is for whatever reason unique to each artist, we decided we weren't happy with that outcome and kept going. It's probably a hard perspective to step into the shoes of if you saw that you were only capable of drawing stick figures and decided "well, that's that then this isn't for me."

The afantasia (SP?) thing is something I’ve been wondering about. So, I first heard about it when a writer friend asked me if I see the scenes playout in my head that I write. And I was just like “yeah, of course”… and what she said, blew my mind. She didn’t. She didn’t see anything in her head when writing. Like, she didn’t have a visual of it. I had no idea that was a thing. Then I found out it’s not even /uncommon/. There are a lot of people who don’t. It’s a whole thing. Now, I’ve only ever heard it in regards to writers. So, I’ve always wondered how that works for artists. So, I’m glad you’re bringing it up. I suppose that’s why some artists only draw from actual life, such as portraits or… still life. Because they can’t visualise it in their mind first. - Which is actually boring to me, not their art, that’s often quite interesting, but I don’t like drawing that way unless it’s specifically for reference purposes (like, “what’s a couch look like? Actually, I like /MY/ couch, so I’m going to draw that for this pic”). But, anyway, that def doesn’t mean someone who doesn’t have that ablity can’t be an artist. And to end this… I see a red apple usually too, unless I’m specifically thinking /about/ green apples (which are my fave). Red apples, specifically “red delicious”, were what my mom usually bought, so yeah.

I disagree about talent's existence. I do believe talent exists, but I believe it exists as a result of other skills and someone's natural tendencies. For example, I am naturally good at singing in key because my disorder makes me more sensitive to sounds. I began drawing at 10 and I wasn't really any good until I was 16, so I prefer to be called skilled too. Anyways I believe even if talent does exist, the natural progression of skill makes it redundant at a certain point. Once your skill career reaches a certain point, your talent blends into the amorphous blob of hard work. Great video!

I feel the same way, I spent years mastering my skill and the word talented feels like it takes away all the effort and hard work I had put in, and that I simply was born knowing how to draw... which isn't the case. I understand tho most people dont mean it in that way but some do, like saying ''you have talent so it's not hard for you'' and stuff like that, it genuinely sucks sometimes

So like, I know there are some people who have e a legitimate condition where they cannot imagine anything. That would definitely affect artistic skill. However, I also believe that creativity and imagination is a muscle just like anything else, and if you aren't working it out consistently, it atrophies. Like, in my current drawing class, I feel the most creative as I ever have. But I have classmates who feel like they are struggling to do anything out of the box because they are architects or realistic artists and don't necessarily flex that imagination and creativity muscle very often. So the question is, how many people who can't see the apple can't due to that condition, and how many have just essentially lost that ability due to not using it? It's a neat thing to think about.

  • @NicoNobody

I have aphantasia as well even though I have only known about it for like 3 years now. I always wondered what people meant when they were talking about visualizing and used to get angry if we had to do meditation techniques to calm down (think: "Imagine yourself on a lush green meadow, hear the birds singing, feel the wind on your skin" Type stuff) because I couldn't do that and was always scolded for not doing what I was told. But I never thought about that when drawing. I just drew. One can absolutely become a great artist even with aphantasia and having it made me believe in skill as well as talent; as cringy and pretentious that sound. Because I have always been able to just draw, despite not being able to visualize and I've never been one to use references either. I did have a tracing phase and am now using references from time to time, but I progressed with just doin it basically. I just drew all the way through kindergarden and then school. So I think I have a talent for it, but I needed to study anyway. I didn't magically create masterpieces or anything. And when I was done with school I realized quickly that I really need to train to maintain the skill or I lose a lot of it. I never had to think about that before because I was always drawing in school and after finishing school I just couldn't anymore because my depression got so bad that I basically stopped doing anything art related. I still struggle to get myself to draw at all because of the nonexistent motivation and how I am so frustrated about it and the fact that I lost so much skill because of it. I can now only draw relatively 'realistic' bodies as of now. I struggle with faces and clothes. The biggest difference though is that I hate everything I used to love and I really struggle to like what I create asa whole. As a kid and teenager I used to love the finished art and be proud of it and only later (even if it was minutes lol) find thinmgs I disliked and needed to improve on. Now I'm always displeased. But that's a me problem not an aphantasia problem I think. Ugh.. Sorry. I really just wanted to say that I believe in talent, but that's just a base to build on; it helps to maybe learn faster or need less tricks(?) and that people with aphantasia can absolutely be artists! Just as well as we are able to describe an apple even though we cant 'see' it, we can create. We just have to aproach it a bit differently. You just need to find something that works for you!

I agree. Couple years ago I did draw like 5 years old. But after hard work all of sudden I'm just "talented" in everyone's eyes. If I was talented I would have always been good at drawing. It is good to have your old drawings still with you and show them by asking "is this talent??" 😝 The key to become better is to study art (by yourself or in school), stay motivated and keep drawing no matter how bad they look. If it's bad. Study why is it bad and fix it. Don't scrap it and start all over again because then you're just wasting time and not learning anything If you are able to read this and your native language is not English I may (jokingly) just say you're talented in languages. Believe me, English isn't the easiest language out there to learn. It's actually a very complicated language. It's all about the practice

My history with art is particularly a mix of talent and learned skill. As a child, I drew animals more, it was something i just learned from looking at pictures, for people on the other hand, I was not as confident, I did drew them from time to time but they were cartoonish, and I had to learn about principles and techniques. In short I thought I was talented in art, but I also took the time to learn skills in art as well.

Though I do agree with your view point, I don’t think any artist who has stable foundation and art pieces can be the way they are as a result of being talented. While I believe innate talent exists aphantasia doesn't really hamper art skill much. They can often create more creative stuff as they pretty much feel out their designs in an iterative fashion. It's almost like sometimes your visual memory can get in the way of being creative. Also regarding the talented argument, often people conflate skilled and talented. They mean the exact same thing in their heads. Plus talent can be hard working.

This ramen is my girlfriend uwu I don't really mind if someone says I'm talented cuz I did work hard, but usually what bothers me is when they say "I can't even draw a stick figure". Like idk, look we all didn't know how to write but we practiced and improved as we got older. I think it's a bit similar to drawing and honestly to most things you have to or want to learn. So when people say that it's just ??? what do you expect me to say or feel? All I can say is, if you're interested in it and enjoy it, do it, keep practicing and there's bound to be some results y w y Plus, everyone is different so there's probably something they're good at that I'm not good at. aFJSKDJN it also reminds me when someone said they wanted to give up drawing cuz they'll never be good at art like asian people and saying how asians are better at everything as if they were born with it and didn't have to work hard. I was like ????? (oh and you can contact me on instagram or twitter @ Somnvari > w < your art is super pretty!)

I have a bit of a mixed opinion on this topic. I've been drawing since my early childhood (about 4 years old I think) and I feel like some stuff is more like a talent because it's become something natural now since I've practised it so early on and I don't even remember it fully. And I guess I'm kinda good at picking colors. Knowing that, I don't feel offended as much, but still if someone just calls me "talented" it feels like all the other stuff that I practiced for years doesn't matter as much

My mom is 100% one of the people who don’t see art as a job. All I tell her is I want to be a concept artist and work in the industry and all she says is, “Oh, so you wanna be a starving artist. You’re not gonna be able to pay the bills.” My sister often defends me, saying things like, “You don’t think her art is good enough. Being a concept artist is a stable, well paying job.” And my mom just says, “No it isn’t. And I love her art. Art just shouldn’t be her job, it should be her hobby” it makes me sick Edit: she also frequently calls me “talented” and “a born natural” which discounts the enormous amount of effort I put into improving my art

  • @TheobaldLeonhart
    @TheobaldLeonhart2 жыл бұрын

I believe what you're mom was talking about, is aphantasia. It's basically where your mind's eye is blind ... I should know, I have it. But I'm still able to draw, because I use a practiced, and use references for everything Which makes it really annoying, when my mom says something like "I don't know how [they] learned to draw so well. I can't even draw a stick figure" Also, for the apple thing. While I don't know about your mother, I can tell you a lot of details about an apple, because of my memories involving them. For example; - It's mostly red, but has some yellow near the middle - It still has the stem, and a little leaf attached However, if you want me to describe things like "where is one bite on it?" "is it rolling?" "is it directly under a light?" "what angle is it at?" I can't tell you. I could tell you where it is, but it would be a vague answer. Like "on my desk" or "in the fruit bowl"

It’s useless though without working hard on it and actually trying to improve by researching and practicing. You won’t necessarily succeed in something you have a talent for but you’re bound to succeed for something you’ve worked hard for and never gave up on. That’s the case for art too for me. The whole art/talent dichotomy and the separation of arts from the traditionally 9to 5 or blue collard work is probably the whole problem with this. Those that painted murals in medieval churches were considered craftsman in the same way as the stonemasons that made the walls and pillars, the wood workers that made the pews and tables, and so on. Even in Shakespeare's time, the term playwright has the same connotation as say a shipwright as they were both craftsmen. Yet when art stopped being synonymous with skill (why the book The Art of War" is called that) and more hobby despite that it is a difficult job. The talent/ skill dichotomy I think there are. People tend to lean in one area and not another. Both can be skillful in one area, but it comes much easier to some than others. Anyone can be trained to work with animals, however some have a better understanding of them from the get go. From there learning and practice pushes this skill even further. Say like Temple Grandin: Because of how her brain works, she could get into the heads of cattle much easier and so developed tools and methods that have improved the cattle industry by working with the animals instead of against them. Art is the same way. Even then I have to wonder how one expresses that art. You use a stylizes and a brush I am assuming, but others have used hammer and chisel to stone, a sharp knife on a stick to carve Desins, and even a chainsaw on scrap wood.

The way I see it, most of the things you’ve become adept at are skills. Even things like art, singing, writing, etc. you may have the voice of a professional singer, or be good with a pen, but I believe it’s because you were taught. Even if you only taught yourself, you still had some mentoring in this specific skill. You may have been born with a natural aptitude for martial arts, but you still have to be taught how to use it. Even if you somehow, against all the odds, master a skill without a lot of practice, you still need to know how to apply that skill, witch is a skill itself. You may have been born for greatness, but how will you know without someone teaching you the skills you may excel at in the future?

But also you shouldnt base your art style on purely just mine but rather experiment to find what works for you. Lots of people get the defenition of talent wrong anyway. Talent is nothing more than the ability to pickup a subject faster than someone who isn't talented. It is indeed innate and something you're born with. But everyone needs to put in the work. People with talent just a little less to achieve the same results. I'm pretty sure this concept has been scientifically proven.
