Partial transcript
Super Mario Maker has been one of my favorite games of the last 10 years. I guess these days, its actually Super Mario Maker 2. I often conflate the first one, the second one and the third one, cleverly titled Super Mario Maker 3…DS.
The concept was so simple and brilliant to have to wonder why it took so long to have it exist in the first place. I would have LOVED this kind of game in the 90s. Even if it wasn’t Mario Maker, just 2D Game Maker would suffice.
My favorite part isn’t actually making the levels. Yes that’s great and a strong #2, but, it was the premade levels that serve as a model for what your self-made levels can become that I liked best. I suppose these exist to help kids who were born in the 21st Century and have never played a 2D Mario game. Certainly, I don’t need a primer! Though I wish I had kept all those notebooks from 6th grade where my theoretical Mario 3 levels were laid down, day after day, instead of paying attention in history, science, math or English class. That reminds me of the worst thing about Super Mario Maker. Kids!! The game is overrun with kids, filling up page after page with their junk!
Nonsensical level design? Check!
Dozens of needless power-ups all over the place? Check!
Bizarre sound effects (that never existed in Mario to start with) at every turn? Check!
Incomprehensible level name?! Double Check!!
The ones made by “adults” don’t far so well either. Often being impossibly difficult for no reason, or automatic, where you just hit start and watch everything play out. Where is the fun in that? Add to the fact that most of these were made by “career KZreadrs” which generate thousands of dollars every hour and it’s just makes me want to kill myself. (Well, not Literally. But I would really put that money to good use, instead of wasting it on waterskis, tattoos and whatever else hip, young, trendy beautiful people do.)

You know what my idea is? Add in Super Mario Bros 3 1/2. The "Super Mario Advance 4" remake on the GBA had e-reader levels. And on the Wii U Virtual Console / Switch Online versions, they brought over ALL existing e-reader levels. But they're technically still just completly seperated levels, and you'd select them from a list of levels. So remake them all, and tie them all together into a Super Mario Bros 3 1/2. Fix some of the really low time limits (or just take the Mario Wonder formula, and remove the time limits entirely, except for the few levels that were specifically designed for speedrunning). Add in a proper world map. And it will become a nice campaign. A shorter campaign, which is why it gets called 3 1/2. For Super Mario Bros 1, add in the Red Coins and Yoshi Eggs into all levels, from the GBC game's Challange mode. Add in the "Super Luigi Bros" mode from one of the NES Remix games. Add proper co-op! There exist a romhack that allows you to play SMB1 in Co-Op, and it's really cool, but the lack of the "bubble" mechanic makes dieing a pain, and entering pipes annoying (both players must enter a pipe for it to work). Nintendo can do it better, I'm sure. In fact, for all games, have an option to switch the art style between NES, SNES, GBA, and the brand new Switch graphics. But basically, since almost every game has 3 or 4 versions - look at what other remakes did, take those ideas, add more improvements. There is so much potential to make this the difinitive way to play all 5 games.

would be great. but keep the palette swapped items in Mario 3. those are so charming. and I sorta took those to be due tot he lighting in the areas, since it was usually underground or something, rather than some sort of glitch. seeing a fully bright, colorful fire flower in an underground or fortress level would look so out of place to me.

It would be great if beating each title unlocked a "special" or "challenge" mode a la the e-reader levels in SMBA4:SMB3-give designers a chance to flex and players an incentive to play all the way through, rather than just dabbling for an afternoon. Have always wanted a true, nintendo-produced follow up to SMB:USA anyway... And this is really a pipe dream, but I'd love these to get the Digital Eclipse Gold Master Series/Atari 50 treatment with background docs, interviews, archival footage.

Super Mario World received a fan patch to work in wide-screen, and Super Metroid as well, the games had to be reprogrammed so that the enemies and items behave as they do in the 4:3 aspect ratio. Even in a CRT, playing on original hardware, Donkey Kong Country has noticeable pop in, specially if you blaze through some levels, you can clearly see barrels spawning at the edge of the screen. I think the original DKC trilogy would also work great with a wider aspect ratio. But again, these games need to be reprogrammed to work properly. Yes, I think such remasters would sell great, just because of what they represent and the few tweaks would be more attractive. I don't think any of this is necessary, but it would be interesting to see.

In my view the definitive mario 2d collection would - have all the 2d platformers released from smb to sml2 - every pre smb mario game as bonus (game n watch & the arcade games for example) - advanced options system - widescreen (4:3, 4:3 with borders, 16:9) - graphics toggle (proto, original, modern) - lives system toggle - score (can deactivate and activate, and also reset score data) - improved psychs and moveset options - wall jumps, mid air spins, sideflips, handstands, spin jump - enemy bounce (auto, smb1, smb2, modern) - coyote time toggle - mirror mode - wl2 save system (allows you to save anywhere) - smb1 having cutscenes that explains the plot based on the manuals & the korean board game - smbdx features, bonuses & game modes - smbs & tll as extra campaigns - smb2 having FDS/YKDDP and Proto Death sfx as an option & level designs options (original and advance) - smb3 having the advance 4 into cutscene, e reader levels & all stars' vs mode - sml having extra levels - sml2 having a hard mode As for the art style, there's few possibilities Could be wonder but tweaked, Yoichi Kotabe Artstyle, an advanced pixel art style based on vb mario land with GBA coloring, lineless

I like the idea on paper, but I think it would be a hard sell. All Stars really is this already for the most part, and you get it with the Nintendo Switch Online service. I do like the idea of HD-Retro graphics in the style of FF Pixel Remaster, where graphics are more of an imitation of how it should have looked or appeared in our imaginations rather than how it actually looked, but I don’t think that and widescreen support would be enough of a push. Maybe if they brought in a lot of extra content like the Satellaview levels or something to sweeten the pot…

6:42 This blank part of the screen was made to prevent the visual bug that happens on the right, but due to limitations, it can only be done on the left side of the screen. Items with "wrong colors" actually share their palette with other elements. This palette changes from level to level. And the "odd artifacts in the background" are actually intentional (and personally, i think they really give their own charm, i like them). I think the idea of a remake would be good, but that it should also include super mario land 1 and 2. Those games deserve more love. And i feel like nintendo should do like with super mario rpg: adding an option to play the original music, in retro style. I feel like there should also be an option to play the games either in their original style, or with brand new graphics, and the original style could be unlocked, for example, if you beat the game once. They should also add new stuff, like star coins, or extra collectibles/levels/modes, which would increase replayability. A multiplayer mode would also be good.

One thing people always over look is that the enemy and obstacle placement was designed for thst smaller screen size. Giving a wider viewport means you can see whats coming up. It also potentially gives Mario more space to move around and dodge. Basically, even a simole thing like increasing the view to widescreen would necessitate level design changes and possibly even a gameplay overhaul since Mario will have a lot more space to work with.

@@GTV-Japan I mean, spreading the obstacles out or changing how the screen scrolls could be enough. I'm just saying until you've actually tried it you don't know how it will effect gameplay. Maybe Nintendo is aware and doesn't want to change the game? Or more likely they've just opted to innovate and make new Mario games. That is also Nintendo's style.

I think the only reason that super hard levels even exist on the maker games is because of the popularity of Kaizo rom hacks. As for some recreations of older Nintendo games, I'd be all for it, but knowing Nintendo it could be a double edged sword, like what happened with F-Zero. I mean sure, F-Zero 99 is pretty good and all but I would rather have had that game as a single player only game with new courses, new vehicles and widescreen 1080p with 60FPS. Maybe I don't see what battle royale adds to a game like this but to me it felt like a punch in the gut, I grew up with that game and I've been waiting for a port of F-Zero GX for ages now, and the only way to play THAT game in 1080p with 60FPS is by using Dolphin.

What I find odd is how rushed the final updates made to Super Mario Maker 2 were. They added a world builder feature, but it feels more like a highly-anticipated afterthought than anything, although I wish they could've designed it better, the Super Mario World style they went with uses a few big pieces to cover a small area almost as big as a modern TV screen. I do think, in my opinion, that the Super Mario Bros. 3 style would've been better in that case. If a Super Mario Maker 3 becomes a possibility in the future, I hope they implement the ability for gamers to build Super Mario Bros. 2/USA-style courses and multiple game files using both the course builder and world builder tools...

I have to wonder about Maker 3. There really is no reason to make one and the big N can instead just add on to maker 2. What would Maker 3 be like? At the core almost the same as 2 which really was the same as 1. If the Next Switch is backwards compatible, I don't se why not, then it's a strange position to be in.

Had to spend a few days thinking about this, but yes I would, if only to encourage N (and maybe other Publishers as well) to do the same. A group of games done in the spirit of FF Pixel RM would be great, but I would need a lot of extras to truly enjoy it, which quite frankly is against N's religion. As for what my perfect pack of games (the one N would charge $60-$70 for) would be this: All three OG SMB titles warts and all along with all the "All Stars" games (again, warts and all). But also include some fun stuff. SMB 2 done in the blocky style of part 1? SMB3 still pixely, but with bright 16-bit colors and widescreen? SMB 1 with lots of well hidden levels, some of which you have to question if they are intentional (along with special appearances from future bosses and enemies in the franchise? I would lay $70 for that; a non-lazy effort that is meant to celebrate (and have fun with) Mario. I don't EVER believe N could do something like this in the modern day (especially outside of Japan), but it is fun to hope

I wouldn't wishlist pixel remasters of the old Mario games because: 1) I've already played them, and I don't really go back and replay games I've already played anymore 2) I've played many a great 2D platformers that came out after the old-school Mario games that I feel like if I did replay the old Mario games, I'd just think they felt dated I think a better idea would be for Nintendo to apply the Mario maker model to other, non-platformer Mario games. For example, RPG Maker has been a think for ages now, so how about Nintendo put out a Paper Mario Maker or a Mario & Luigi Maker?

I always wanted to see HD pixel dot art remasters of old video games. Unfortunately I think if these Japanese companies did remake these games they would use polygons and it wouldn't be the same thing. If they used pixel art with today's modern resolutions the characters would look like the art in the instruction manuals come to life. Just imagine what that could look like for a Mario game it would be amazing. But instead they use polygons. Examples of pixel art HD editions done right would be Earthworm Jim, Double Dragon, DuckTales. An example of one gone wrong would be Street Fighter II HD remix which instead of using the original art as its basis used Udon to redraw all the characters and it looks terrible.

My guess is Nintendo already makes plenty of money re-selling the original games each time they release a new console, so why bother putting in the effort just to compete with themself? They may also see it as devaluing the original games to admit they are flawed and could be improved upon. If the originals see a significant enough drop in sales, then they may put a remastered version out. But for now, they don't need to and they like seeing the numbers of how many units the original games still sell over generations.

You should try the fangame Super Mario Brothers X. It's like Mario Maker but with a lot more assets and playable characters. The individual games are called episodes. One of the bundled episodes "the invasion 2" combines a ton of assets and features from all 4 of the classic mario games. The only issue with the engine is the 4:3 aspect ratio that I think can only be changed by editing the config.

6:55 on an original CRT box tv, you wouldn't have been able to see those since they are obscured by the curve of the screen. Additionally, most emulators have a setting to crop these parts out. 7:07 those are meant to be there... they're like clouds or star constelations or something... either way they're an intentional part of the game (sorry for being an asshole, just wanted to point these thing out lol)

There were plenty of platformer games with level editors in the '90s. Jill of the Jungle's was somewhat hidden (you had to press Ctrl+E from the main menu to access it) and was a bit awkward to use, but it was still there. Jetpack's level editor was one of it's best features. Jazz Jackrabbit 2 also came with the Jazz Creation System allowing users to create their own levels. Moving forward past the '90s a few years you had SuperTux, which released its first version in 2004. It has very, shall we say "Mario-inspired" gameplay and includes a full level editor. There have always been ways for people to make their own levels in 2D games; Mario Maker just got more marketing than most.

They could always just build from the SNES/GBA versions of each game since they were the most refined versions of these games to date, though in the case of the NES games, having the option to switch between 8 or 16 bit graphics and sound would be great, maybe the option to play in 4:3 or 16:9. Plus the e-reader levels of SMB3 on GBA. Maybe add the You Vs Boo or Racing in SMB1 like the SMB Deluxe.

Nintendo should develop their own 4:3 tube technology screen and sell it in a device like Virtual Boy that uses fpga, that connects to Internet and down load old NES/SNES/n64 games and play them with the device and their replica USB controllers. So can experience games to within 99.9% of originality.

Weren't those SMB3 glitches at the side of the screen hidden in the overscan area of 1980s TVs? (I didn't have an NES back then so I don't remember if these things were visible or not.) Keep hammering the correct pronunciation of "Bros.". An easy way to explain it is: "You don't pronounce 'Dr. Mario' as 'Durr Mario', do you? Well 'Bros.' works the same way!" I think a lot of younger people genuinely don't know and weren't taught this stuff in school. I saw a video about Ms. Pac-Man where the guy kept saying "Miss Pac-Man". He thought that "Ms." was an abbreviation for "Miss", and people in the comments stated that their teachers actually TOLD THEM THIS SAME THING! And it's really annoying when a KZreadr is corrected about these abbreviations, and instead of saying "Whoops, I've been pronouncing this wrong. Thanks for correcting me!", they double down and throw a tantrum in subsequent videos. When it was pointed out to one guy that even the Japanese people in their commercials say "Brothers", he started pronouncing it "Supa- Mario Bura-zaz" in subsequent videos instead of the normal English way. (Strangely, in Japanese, "Hammer Bros." is actually written ハンマーブロス, so the "Bros." part is pronounced like "bross", rhyming with "gloss", whereas "Mario Bros." is マリオブラザーズ, or "Mario Brothers".) The aforementioned "Miss Pac-Man" guy then released another video trying to justify the way he was pronouncing "Ms.".

Funny timing. I just finished the FFV Pixel Remaster the other day (I beat the FFIV & VI ones last year) and was lamenting on how we should have MORE remasters like those. I was thinking along the lines of other classic RPGs (where the option to turn off random encounters, set EXP multipliers etc is a godsend) such as Dragon Quest and co, but other kinds of games could benefit from it as well. I also had the thought while playing Super Mario Maker that to see the original 8-bit games in such bright & glorious high-def was a real treat, which made it more annoying that those graphics were "wasted" on mostly goofy community-made levels.

YES!!! I've had this idea for years but I thought it was too specific of a request for most people to be on board with. Glad to see it being talked about! It's not even just Mario, basically all of Nintendo's 8 and 16 bit greats could use this treatment. Zelda, Metroid, Donkey Kong Country, Kirby, Earthbound, Star Fox and so on. I feel the need to point out that the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters aren't exactly the same as this idea, the graphics are not replicating the originals but rather going for a new unified look.

I disagree about making old games widescreen (the same way I would adhere to the original aspect ratio of a movie or TV show, whether the question is cutting off picture OR adding it) as it does affect gameplay somewhat, but otherwise this idea seems like a no-brainer.

I dunno, as someone who plays almost exclusively retro games these days -- on my 42" HDTV, pixelization and screen size issues be damned -- I don't personally see much need for this, and almost definitely wouldn't buy it myself if one were to be made, as I'd prefer to simply play my copy of Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World for the SNES using my modified Super Famicom with the component video-out cable I bought for it. I think those who enjoy classic gaming experiences are less likely to be too concerned with things like screen resolution or window size -- and honestly, expanding the viewable space in the classic Mario games would fundamentally change them, too, giving the player an added advantage that wasn't present in the original versions. For a purist, that could be a bridge too far, making pixel remasters of the classic Mario games less desirable. There's also the fact that Square's pixel remasters of the Final Fantasy games are... messy, to say the least. Framerate issues, ghosting (especially on the Switch version when played in docked mode), mediocre/lackluster arrangements of the classic music, and extremely inconsistent resolution from one screen layer to the next (text is not the same resolution as character portraits, which are not the same resolution as regular gameplay, which seriously triggers my OCD!) left something of a sloppy impression on many of us, and have soured us to the ideas of "pixel remasters" on the whole. To the point that hearing those two words spoken, at this point, triggers a bit of a fight-or-flight response in me. ;) That's not to say Nintendo shouldn't do this, as there definitely would be a market for it, as you yourself exemplify. I just... don't think it would quite be as big a market as all that. The Final Fantasy pixel remasters succeeded more because they offered people a way to play the classic games on modern systems, and in many cases offered them a chance to buy all six of the classic 8- and 16-bit Final Fantasies in one go -- that, more than anything, is the big selling point of the physical release that includes all six games on one card. And doing something like that with the original 5 games (and, heck, might as well throw Yoshi's Island in too for a cool 6!) would definitely have some appeal, albeit less than with the Final Fantasy set due to the existence of All-Stars on SNES and Wii already covering most of it. But if it were up to me, I'd say just bundle 100% pixel-for-pixel, cycle-for-cycle emulations of the games together on a single game card, and that's it. No need to "remaster" them.
