I thought the main reason was energy related. The Droidkas were able to house shield generators because they were given stronger batteries albeit put out more radiation. Where personal shields had safer batteries but could only withstand a few hits before needing to cycle a recharge.

Iirc that's why Scorponek droids are so rare, because of the sheer expense needed to make them because of the energy shield and why you see more armor plating rather than shielding.

If I recall the old lore, the personal shields of the time were all disposable with integrated batteries and wouldn't produce radiation, with the exception of a few droid models which could have generators built-in given the fact droids could handle the radiation produced by the micro generators. Shields also fell out of fashion because more powerful blasters were being produced and shield tech was far more expensive, especially given how most were disposable You can have shields with generators that don't produce radiation but they'd be too bulky for personal use so they're only found on vehicles and fixed positions
Kotor 1&2, Dark forces 1&2, mysteries of the sith, jedi outcast, jedi academy, and a dozen other sw games would like a word about personal shields.
I imagine flamethrowers don't work against shields either. The gasoline should be ejected slowly to traverse the shield
@deaconpoole7577

Flames actually penetrate Energy Shields perfectly fine (which is ironic considering Fire just being the release of energy through heat and light) But with that being said, Personal Bubble Shields appear to use Electro Magnetism of some kind, to create a field of Plasma-repelling (as well as kinetically charged metallic objects like hand grenades) energy. Or, in a more simple term, the Personal Bubble Shield can redirect Electro Magnetic energy, as well as metallic objects charged with Kinetic Energy. There’s obviously some exceptions, but that’s the general rule of thumb; Plasma Bolts and Grenades don’t work on the shields, but a primed grenade that is slowly passed inside the shield at low kinetic energy, or actual flames, or slugthrower rounds which are small enough to be able to penetrate the shield due to their relatively low Kinetic Energy to Mass ratio, all of those are left unaffected.

A buckler or armshield made with gungang plasma tech with a like rayshield for extra protection could be an incredibly strong and lightweight bit of personal protection.
Some Droidekas actually turned off their shields so they could run the extra power to their blasters either increasing the number of shot sent towards the enemy or making the shots more powerful, can’t remember which. They were selective about doing this though, if the were likely to receive fire they’d just leave the shields up.

I was about to bring this up. It's spacecraft level shielding shrunk down to cover a single organism/droid. That would drain a lot of credits from any buyers wealth
This will make a fine addition to my collection
_How are you powering that ray shield?_ _Portable battery pack?_ _You know those only have a battery life of only a few minutes?_ (Shield goes down) _Oh no._
Well… that explains a lot. I just figured that it had to do with the size of the shield generator. But that couldn’t explain the use of the small personal shields.
These guys looked Hella dangerous on Battlefront
Those bad bois right there, a battlefront (2004) players absolute nightmare to deal with.
GT: The Droidekas were terrifying Me:*Has PS2 Battlefront Flashbacks*
Maybe the kaminoans figured “these clone commandos won’t live long enough for their shielded armor to kill them”
Nobody in Naboo thought of exporting Gungun Shields?!
okay but you gotta address the personal energy shields in kotor and kotor 2
Clone commandos: “am I a joke to you?”
This is the first time I'm hearing of this. Like ever. Personal shields just took a lot of energy. That's really it. You'd need to carry extra energy cells for your shields. And that's weight you could use for weapons, mobility, or ammo.
Also the vibrations from personal shields attracted sand worms.
Destroyer Droids are extremely expensive to build as well. The personal deflector shield generators do exist in empire era, worn on a belt. With no radiation, but are not very strong and eat through power packs very quickly.
I never knew the deflector shields were radioactive ig you learn stuff about Star Wars every day
Nice fan in the background, I know the air in that room is circulating
You know the meme where a triangle-patterned tri-blaster can overcome a single lightsaber? They should have armed Droidekas with those.
Personal energy shields were literally everywhere in the Old Republic. Not mention the Mandalorians had shields that blocked weapons like vibroblades.
More like how come that scene in episode one was the only time we see force running
One Would think that Planetary shields would kill everything on a Planet then.
Don’t forget the energy shields Commando droids are sometimes shown with
Star Wars Battlefront characters: Haha, this is fine.
You know whats funny. Is Knights of the Old Republic, there were such things as Personal Shield Generators. Though with limited charges and only lasted for a limited time or after taking to much damage. Why such tech was abandoned in the thousands of years between The Old Republic and the Movies, I'm not quite sure.
Me and the boys when we know it really only takes 4 hits from a lightsaber to deactivate the shields
Good explanation. Kind of strange though that besides the gungans, these are people that could probably take a hit with their armor without the shield

Guess for them it is more to protect the head. Just wear your helmet!
I would've thought those kind of shields just took more battery to power Battery that would be too heavy and dangerous to carry around like that for infantry But why don't more tanks and vehicles just adopt these shields then?
@FShani
Жыл бұрын
Given that tie fighters were unshielded while rebel fighters were almost always shielded, it's likely the same issue of cost and power draw needed to shield the entire vehicle. And how expendable the men operating those vehicles were considered.
Didn’t the commando droids in the citadel episodes of the clone wars, have deflector shields?
We used to play the WEG Star Wars TRPG and this was our reasoning, too (I’m not sure if it was canon at that point).
Source? Energy shields are used in KOTOR, as well as by Republic Commandos on their Katarn armor.
What I always wondered why a Jedi couldn’t use the force to take out the droid’s power source or just switch it off.
Droideka probably the best anti infantry droid ever exist
Because it also requires a shield generator, gotta give it to grievous for being able to lift one up and toss it.
Always thought the droidikas were badass! I know the shield only allow things to pass through at a certain speed... Was it ever explained why the lasers fired from the blasters was the exception to this rule?
that begs the question why more droids dont have sheilds, seeing how absurdlh effective it was for the droidekas
Imagine an ig droid with a shield like that

we never really see a moving deployed overshield that I can remember. even the gungans had to stop before they deployed anything that wasn't unidirectional. you could make an argument for an AT-AT having one, but maybe that's why it was so slow.
Don’t get me wrong, I 100% believe that as an in universe explanation, but I also feel like it the writers choose not to make them common since they take away a lot of danger we find characters in. Radiation, power consumption are very good reasons but I feel like a small amount is writing.
So the snipers in battlefront 2 have canser?
The republic should've hire naboo to provide the army with gungan shields
Force crush says WHAT!!!!
Wasn’t the main problem the massive power draw the shields took? Droidekas had small power generators already built in by virtue of being a droid but for a person to carry a backpack sized generator would’ve been very cumbersome and expensive
Everyone got one in Kotor
If this were the case, why didn't every droid have a shield? The droid army would mow over any opponent. i would suggest another factor is that shields were voracious power hogs. If the droidika didn't defeat their target within a few minutes, they would run out of power and shutdown. Otherwise, why produce anything other than droidikas for your droid army?
@zacheryeckard3051
Жыл бұрын
The Droideka were bought with meat from a planet that was the only producer. They bought all they could afford.
except in "dark forces" a 1995 game for pc and its sequel a personal shield wasn't a problem :P
So what your saying is... The Empire should've kept the droidikas...
Republic Commandos had personal shields.
Just want to point out that you can see Obi wan and Anakin doing the speed thing in this
Same question you can ask about "Force Speed"
Surprised naboo main export isn't the shield tech if the safe
They also require a lot of energy to power them.
What about the shields used on Ringo Linda, that kind of shield could have cut republic ground casualties in half.
They used Force Dash!! Sweet!!
Good enough
We’re those two droidekas technically the ones who started everything?
They have shields. What I do not understand is the Droid fires lasers out of the deflector, but the deflector defends against the "light"saber?😮
No wonder Dooku was so keen on conquering Naboo. The material the gungans used for shields could have been applied to the droidekas thereby increasing their production. speaking of which, did the Empire do that? Naboo probably might have been part of the empire. There's no canon source to my knowledge that it was secretly rebelling like Alderaan was. Plus Padme was dead and Jar Jar went from representative of the Gungans on the Republic senate to a mere street performer in Theed. So it is unknown who was the next Naboo senator before the imperial senate was dissolved.
Now hear me out, hulk with a deflecter shield
They're also supposedly prohibitively expensive which is why the CIS didn't just use all droidekas and why they didn't use the scorpineks from book of boba fett
What about the Gunguns shield? Likely not same tech but pros and cons?
Slow cancer death or super fast blaster bolt death might make me want to have a shield just in case and only turn it on in emergencies
Cause if everyone got shields it would turn everybody into Spartans
Sev was spared from getting space cancer at least
Personal shields were also common in the Old Republic era, but where phased out eventually as improvements in blaster and disruption technology became better at defeating them.
What I'm sad about is that they don't use Vibroswords as often as possible instead of blaster rifles
what happened to the personal shield generators from the kotor era?
so then what about Ray shields? it was funny to me in rebels or the phantom menace when they got trapped in a ray shield circle and it kinda felt like "dangit, reflector shields we can deal with but these things are LITERALLY impossible even as jedi"
Explained in courtship of Princess leia
I thought it's like Dune's shields which vibrates too fast to the point where oxygen can't penetrate it
Jedi shield belts that used Khyber crystals, surprised more people dont talk about this from the books when Obi wan and Qui gon used em to escape.
Anyone remember when they didn't bolt off like a vampire? VHS version was so much better imo.
And the needed a ton of power to work
Just another examples of the Republic ignoring the adaptation of technology. Considering Naboo was in the Republic. They could have easily developed personal shield technology.
@FShani
Жыл бұрын
Considering it was primarily gungans using them they were likely harvested from the ocean floor making them a major environmental and diplomatic issue. Given their shape I wouldn't be surprised if they were even organic in nature, which would limit the amount that could be produced no matter how willing the gungans would be to accept trade deals for them.
Power up the fan fiction shields 😋😆
*rayshields, not defkector. Defkector shields also absorb physical damage like rockets, grenades, stones and fists, which is not the case for droidekas
So then why were deflector shields used to protect towns and armies multiple times in star wars cannon if they emitted so much radiation?
@FShani
Жыл бұрын
Different types of shield technology, that was the point being made here. Cheap radioactive shields that can easily cover an entire battle droid, expensive and power intensive non radioactive shields that could only be used sparingly or at great personal expense to a governor (some of the now non canon books even delved into how some Imperial governors would run secret blackmarket businesses to fund a shield capable of covering their base). Plus the gungan shields seemingly native to and possibly organically produced on Naboo, just to prove there are even more potential types of shielding technology out there.
Did clone commando armor have a type of shield built into it?
They were also very freaking expensive.
so you mean to tell me that the ships that have shield generators are straight up radioactive all the time?
Because if everyone had a personal deflector shield, the similarities to Dune would suddenly become too evident.
So then how do you explain the specifically addressed as “Droideka Style” personal shields in Battlefront 1 and 2? Somehow, the Republic, Empire, Rebellion, First Order, and Resistance all are just A-Okay with giving their soldiers cancer causing amounts of radiation? I think there’s more at play here than just “radiation”

Not to mention just about every first person sw game has personal shields: kotor(1&2), just about every game where kyle katarn was a mc(about a dozen), jedi knight (outcast/academy) (exception of fallen order)
Republic Commandos?
It's not just because of the energy supply et cetera et cetera it's the interaction between the shield and elements impinging upon it
big part of it was that they were expensive
Do ship deflector shields work in atmosphere?
