Why Are We Attracted to People Who Look Like Us?

It's always a little weird when a couple looks like they could be related, but Brit explains the science behind why it's not totally creepy! It involves percentages and kind of uncomfortable rating systems!

I had noticed since more than 30 years, that a lot of couples that last a lot together are those that look like siblings or male-female twins. They meet young, had some kids that grow to be like younger siblings, and age together increasing the similarities. Even they dress the same style. I've explained to myself that some genes, in order to last in time, lead to seek similar phenotypes.

But considering how people move about and immigrate, from what I’ve seen, people also stay within their ethnicities diaspora in other countries (not always but frequently), even if not exactly close location-wise. I guess “tradition” also plays into it but also as the video says, wanting someone with similar qualities, beliefs, characteristics etc. etc.

This phenomena feels more like a correlation, due to demographics, culture and exposure. I find it likely that an individual is far more likely to consider a partner that looks different from themselves if they feel the other partner is part of their community, and the individual has been highly exposed to the partner's hereditary appearance. For example, a town with mixed white and hispanic, but with healthy blending and tolerance, and little or no conflict between these two groups. I use this as an example because it was apparent in my hometown, where the students in my high school were easy to date among people that were not visually similar to each other. Just as beauty is subjective, and cultural. I can see how seeing yourself in another person may make them more attractive, but I think this also relates to perceived beauty of the self, as others in the comments have noted. Being narcissistic or simply confident of your appearance likely facilitates this, and already being in a healthy relationship tends to secure the insecure, so I'm curious about the study's participants. Perhaps the study accounted for these concerns? But I'd like to see more evidence for the idea.

I would love to see a video about DID (dissociative identity disorder), commonly known as multiple personalities. That movie called Split that came out this year has brought this disorder more to the front of people's minds, so this would be a good time to learn about what is going on in the brain of someone with this disorder. I heard once about a study where actors were asked to play out different roles while their brain activity was tracked. No matter the role they played, their brain activity always originated from the same place in the brain. Then they did the same thing with DID patients, but this time they checked for brain activity as each new personality came out. Each personality originated from a different part of the brain.

carl flaherty yes, it could, attraction to people is a lot more than just biology, social factors also play a large role in it. Take for example, a white man raised in the 1920s vs one today. The guy from the 1920s would be much less likely to find an African American woman attractive at all, but the white guy raised today would have a much higher chance of being attracted to one.

It also would be interesting to see if they [people in an arranged marriage] would react the same way when they look at their partner's face.

One of my closest friends in high school used to date a guy with the EXACT SAME skin and hair color as her. His bone structure was much more delicate looking than hers, and they had different eye colors, but people sometimes thought they were related because of the skin and hair. (It's worth noting that the shade of medium gold they both have as a skin tone isn't all that common in our area, either.) I feel like that was more a fluke than anything else, as my friend's half Greek on her dad's side, and has a Cuban grandmother and mostly Puerto Rican grandfather with a little bit of French and Irish blood on her mom's side, while I believe her ex-boyfriend was mostly English with some Cajun ancestry as well if I remember correctly (I know Cajuns have a lot of French ancestry, but I don't really know much about Cajun history beyond that I'm afraid.)

I would think that the study about the likelihood of similar genetic matches between couples, I think that has a large part to do with how a majority of people tend to stay in one location and thus are more likely over time to encounter someone who is related to them to some degree. It is the entire basis of genetic communities and how companies like ancestry.com can guess where you are from based on your DNA. This would definitely mean that the average couple would be more similar genetically than two strangers. In the same way that I am also more closely related to my neighbors than someone across the nation.

My own appearance is the exact opposite of what I deem "attractive" and would have a very hard time being in a committed and intimate relationship with someone who looked like me... But I don't think I'm ugly or anything??? It's hard to explain x.x

I'd just like to say a few things. 1) New findings like this tend to be from small studies that indicate a trend, and thus s possible subject of more expensive and exhaustive research. 2) Genetic similarity is only one factor in attraction. If you feel this is not accurate to the small data set you have experienced, that does not mean the finding is grossly inaccurate. It just means that other factors were stronger, or perhaps that you did not perceive the influence of this factor. Or it could be that further research will show this finding to be a fluke, but until someone funds it, we will never know. 3) Additional research will be necessary to determine if this holds true for non-attack-helicopters. This study makes that sort of research possible by highlighting a possible trend in mate selection. 4) If a person does not want children, they may still be influenced by bodily processes that motivate people to form mating bonds that tend to result in children.

I've had a mix partners that both looked and didn't look like me. However! The one woman that i have been with that looks like she could be in my family is the one i had the most sexual chemistry. After she and I both got divorced (me from my first marriage, her from her second) we met up and had dinner which lead to more, as you can expect. She also stated that, for whatever reason, there was something between us that never really went away. I've felt the same way. We decided not to try a more mature relationship now as we live on different ends of the country and both needed time after our divorces to minimize baggage. What's funny is we both married people that looked nothing like us. For her, both of her husbands looked like they could be brothers.

What's interesting is that genetic diversity tends to yield healthier offspring as there is a reduced chance of passing on various genetic disorders. A lot of these disorders are recessive traits so they won't show up on their own but when both parents carry one of the genes, there's a much higher chance of their child having it. Some common genetic disorders that often appear in communities with lots of inbreeding are polydactyly (having extra fingers or toes) and haemophilia (prevents blood from clotting when you have a cut). There was also a famous case of a family that had a condition that gave them blue skin due to inbreeding. It makes sense to seek out those who are genetically dissimilar because it reduces risk of passing these disorders on. I remember learning in an anthropology class I took that a person will typically find the scent of a person who is genetically compatible to be more appealing and attractive than other people. Of course, genetically compatible doesn't necessarily mean genetically diverse and this could be part of determining the line between similar enough and too similar. Furthermore, this sort of thing is related to attraction with respect to reproduction, so it makes me wonder how these kinds of studies (such as the face one mentioned in the video) would turn out when done with same sex couples. And disclaimer: this is just what I remember learning in biology and anthropology classes, I'm not an expert or authority on this topic, just sharing my two cents. I hope whoever is reading this has a nice day :)

I'm multiracial and live in an area that's mostly people of northern European decent, so it's difficult for me to find someone that look similar to myself. My husband is a complete opposite of me. He's 6'6", blonde hair, and have pale blue eyes.... but we do have many things in common, we are both athletic, and we both try to be as open minded as possible. My celebrity crushes do tend to look similar to me, like Keanu Reeves, so I think if I was in a more diverse area, maybe I would have picked differently...... but I'm still very happy with my selection :)

My husband and I actually couldn't be more different in a lot of ways. We're different races, I'm older by more than four years, he grew up in a big city and I grew up first in the suburbs and then in the country, and our family structures couldn't be more different. Physically, our only similarity is that we're about the same size -- he's an inch taller than me, and we both wear an adult medium T-shirt. We do have a lot of similarities in our personalities, interests, and values, but we still have some big differences in those categories as well. Just keepin' the gene pool fresh over here, I guess!

Hmmmm...then why is "Opposites attract" a thing? My wife and I are pretty different...I'm taller, she's shorter. I'm rarely sick, she gets sick all the time. I have a darker complexion, she's paler. My eyes are hazel, hers are blue. We are both white and brown hair. I always figured we were attracted to each other subconsciously so our kids would have a compliment of genes we were missing individually. Like Ying and Yang...a balance.

Hmm, I'm half asian, and I look more asian than not, but I've never really been attracted to asians. They should do studies about attraction between races. Maybe, thanks to what I've learned and taken in from the surroundings and society, I find non-asians to be more attractive even though we do not look alike, which goes against these studies.

How about this for a hypothesis? Species that are too dissimilar can't breed. If you have multiple species of humans, as in earlier eras, they might not all be able to interbreed. You'd need a mate who was of your species or similar enough to be able to produce offspring. So you'd want a mate that kind of looked like you, maybe. But mating with a close relative would, as we know, produce sickly offspring, if any. So you'd want a mate who didn't look too much like you.

  • @MotorGoblin
    @MotorGoblin5 жыл бұрын

Doesn't it also make sense to like the faces of your offspring which are essentially a mix of your and your partner's faces? Not that you are attracted to them sexually but it's probably favorable if your parent doesn't think you are as ugly as other people's kids and maybe this affects choosing a mate as well. Also, at an early age, you have learned to trust your family so maybe a little bit of that association is seen as positive. Also, maybe too much of a leap is too risky. Imagine the offspring of a Chihuahua and a Great Dane. Just wondering if these things are factors in attraction. Also, I wonder how it has been studied because attraction might be something you want to observe with brain imaging or other biometrics instead of asking because it's not always obvious that you like what you think you like.

The answer is all there but not clear. Simply, it is the balance between two extremes of genetic differences/similarities.. The extremes, though has the highest rewards, but with greatest risks.
