Curse, you were on track when you mentioned Anu and how he seperated into two beings, and then you jumped to the world stone. You explained how the nephalem were created but didn 't explain why they are so powerful. The reason why Nephalem are so powerful is because they are the closest thing to the original Anu. Anu originally was both demon and angel, when he split, creating hell and heaven from the ensuing battle, the angels and demons were only half of Anu, when Anu seperated, he lost half his power. Therefore, Demons and angels are missing the other half nessisary to become whole, the Nephalem are a combination of both Demon and Angel, that's the reason why they are so powerful, that's the why. The demons would of been more powerful had they also been angels. The mortality thing is just relating to how long they are alive, bleeding or resurrecting abilities, mortality does not gauge strength in the diablo universe. Which is why the Nephalem can conquer both the forces of hell and heaven regardless of how much of a boost the angels or demons get. The soul stone, even with the combined 7 lords of hell, is still just half of Anu's fractured power. A nephalem wields ALL OF IT. That is why they can so easily dispatched the greatest champion from all sides. And by this logic, Sanctuary will eventually give birth to the actual reincarnation of Anu himself. Later in the story line, Anu will be born from the mortals on sanctuary and will come to realize the necessity of needing to be both demon and angel, and will seek to absorb everything, both angel and demon to become one being again. From there the story line will delve into a nephlem with the inherited abilities of Anu, who will fight Anu to prevent the destruction of all creation. This would be the final chapter in the diablo universe.

Add into this, the idea that Diablo has caught on to this meta-theory throughout the series, and he seeks to get ahold of this reincarnated Anu for himself and there's your next Diablo fight. Epic would be an understatment, imo.

Sounds convincing. Though the funny thing is, this would eventually create a "looped universe" in which eventually a reborn Anu will succeed in absorbing all creation only to later on split up again and the history will repeat itself. I mean, the Nephalem only wield pure power like Anu, but not the same amount - after all, the Worldstone was part of his body and was powerfull enough to strip the Nephalem of their power. Heck the Nephalem are the children of Angels and Demons, who themself only are tiny pieces of just the spine and horn of the complete Anu. Anu himself cannot be reborn, as he was the sum of all creation - however a Nephalem could be born, who tries to absorb all creation to become Anu. So far all the Nephalem had rather limited diversity of powers (classes), the moment one with the ability to absorb others would be born, that one could try to become Anu and with absorbing a couple of Nephalem, could soon become more powerfull than everyone else, and even if defeated by cooperation of countless Nephalem, more will be born, until one might succeed.

  • @billschafer92

Shuizid, your idea holds merit but as it stands we have no idea why Anu split apart in the first place... it could have been because of being bored, or lonely, or conflicted with himself. It's discussed in-game, but only in the abstract and that's why I dig the theory Lord Gallvion presented; it could provide insight into the meta-story behind Diablo and how it ties into the Blizzardverse... since it seems that Blizz may be aiming for a Marvel/DC-esque multiverse concept with their IPs. EDIT: Looking at the Diablo wiki page, he did it to achieve perfection. Apologies for the above statement, however it doesn't go into great detail about what prompted his desire for perfection. Still a mine of opportunities there.

so maybe in diablo 4 you could fight bad nephalems, this could make sense, because if nephalem are so powerful there might be some that want to rule everything, so in diablo 4 you, the good nephalem, fight those bad nephalems

That makes the most sense to me for the next expansion. A corrupt group of newly risen nephalem, perhaps disciples of Zoltan Kulle, follow in his footsteps and discover a way to unleash their nephalem power. With a similar mindset to Kulle (before we killed him), that the nephalem should bring war against the angels and demons, these rogue nephalem soon start a campaign to wipe out both heaven and hell but end up threatening all of creation in the process. I think this would be especially cool because we, as the good nephalem, would have to work with both the angels and the demons because this new threat is so great it could wipe everyone out if we don't unite. This could include a lot in interesting tension between the angels and demons, which are forced to unite against a common foe under your leadership. We could also meet erstwhile demon allies such as Lilith, which would be really cool.

I never saw anything wrong with Kulle. I mean, he was trying to help MANKIND. He was on OUR side. He wanted to bring our powers to their max. And when he realized what Diablo had planned for the Black Soulstone, he tried to TELL us, but we said "Fuck you" and killed him.

Oh, I know what you mean. The ideas I expressed above were just in line with the game's narrative that WE are the good guys, although I think how our characters were presented in quite a few situations in the game made them out as rather self-righteous and naive. For example: I didn't trust Adria the second I met her, and I knew I was going to have to fight Kulle, which really irritated me because you basically spend an entire act putting his ass back together just to end up destroying him in the end. And even though I did like Kulle, he still meant to start a war between angels, demons and nephalem, something that would have definitely endangered all of Sanctuary. This is why the Horadrim sealed him up in the first place. So even if we would have let him go initially, I think we would have still ended up putting a stop to his plans eventually.

Brilliant. Therefore next should come the nephalem wars, in which a few power hungry ones take on the aspects of demons, but also a few self-righteous ones take their quests for godhood to quite another extreme. And while the caldron boils over with those few new nephalem the question arises, which one is in fact the new incarnation of Diablo, and will his powers newly combined with certain nephalem bring him to the identity of the unrivaled originator of all demons. Meanwhile all lesser lords of hell and angels become minions pitted against each other on the eternal battle field but they begin to become confused by the paranoia of who is really in charge of their forces. Therefore good is sometimes playing for evil and sometimes evil plays for good. You play one of the few new nephalem who is interested in restoring balance and truth.

Thank You!...the quick lore rewind is much appreciated Curse! It was quite on point on both books and gameplay...there is no extensive lore yet on how the prime evils and angelic aspects rose to their prominence (there was some passing line on the demons that they kept fighting until the strongest distinguished themselves as rulers...nothing of the sort for angels)...the lore just assumed that lillith and inarius were old time bigshots (who went and gone effit mode :D) predating the D1,D2 and D3 gameplay primes and aspects...in D2...it did hint in gameplay that somehow lilith did birth andariel (a lowbie usurper prime that is part of the 4 that banished/tricked the big 3 primes to man's realm...there were 7 right?)...so what about the rest?...and who are those weirdo shadows in D3 asmodan cutscenes sitting like a council lording over asmodan...

As much as I love the story of Valla and Li-ming as the sort of Canon Nephalems, the existence and usage of Nephalems as mcs kind of ruins the dark atmosphere of Diablo. From the get-go you are destined to destroy any adversary, be it demons or angels. As much as tragedy occurs during your adventure as the nephalem, none of it was an impossible task and even the side characters acknowledge how you are suppose to be superman but with the gear of batman. While at the end, where Tyrael doubts the nephalem's true moral allignment, none among the 7 playable characters suggest that they favor being bad or tilts toward questionable methods to attain a machiavellic justice like Malthael. But, incase the nephalem would become the enemy far surpassing anyone, I hope it would be Li-Ming since she's some reality bending wizard more powerful than the prime evil or the aspect of death.

All Nephalem are exceptionally powerful yes, however Uldyssian was likely the most powerful a Nephalem could ever become and is likely became the original form of Anu itself. In the end of the book he gathered all of his powered and released it across time & space all into one place. Reasons for me thinking this? - Anu was originally a entity of both good and evil and separated the evil from itself, Uldyssian is half Angela/Half Demon making it a very interesting parallel. - The World Stone was created when Anu and the Prime Evil clashed, the universe was created at this time with the World Stone at it's core. - Uldyssian has a unique ability to fundamentally change the World Stone in a way that no other race has shown, not even other powerful Nephalem like Rathma were able to manipulate it like he did. - The world stone which at the time was set to weaken the Nephalem had little effect on Uldyissian even when he stood in-front of it and was much weaker than he would become later, if the World Stone is a portion of his power crystallized it would explain the lack of effect on him. - In the last chapters Uldyssians power was destroying the world, meaning his power had to be on par or greater than that of the World Stone which was the core of Sanctuary itself.

I think the only way forward is to make the Nephalem become corrupted so that they are actually the enemies in Diablo 4. I think we'd play regular mortal characters (as we did in Diablo 2) who have to take down various Nephalem characters. It seems like the Diablo 3 story has already hinted that this could happen. They really can't be playable characters after Diablo 3. The lore suggests they are too powerful.

Use machine learning to have it fight similarly to your D3 play-style with that character, with enhanced powers to make them a worthy end-game boss. The only constant of a Diablo game is that we must fight Diablo. The interesting question is how that comes about. Zoltan Kulle thought he could use the Black Soulstone to absorb the powers of angels and demons and wield them himself. Now that the Nephalem are free of the Worldstone's suppressing influence, who's to say that one of them won't try to carry out that plan? John Aldrich the nehphalem are already demons and angels combined. So absorbing angel and demon souls wont matter. I guy a few comments above had a fairly interesting theory that a Nephalem will become a reincarnation of the gob who will then try to absorb everything to fix the problems going and destroy sanctuary.

Interesting fact in one hand is that Diablo always seeked stronger and stronger soul to possess. Being the youngest Demon Lord, this isn't surprising. He's the greediest, the thirtiest and also the deadliest out of the seven Demon Lords. He first off sought Leoric's youngest child's soul : Albrecht. His older brother defeated Diablo in Diablo I and became the Dark Rogue (sorry, I don't know the correct name in English) in Diablo II. Then, it was Leah who is actually the Rogue's and Adria's daughter. On the other hand, how could Diablo's remains could ever take over the Nephalem's powerful mind after he defeated Malthael who absorbed so much power in Diablo III: Reaper of Souls ? Fact is : A Diablo game isn't a Diablo game without Diablo's return, and he's been more and more powerful each time. What could be Diablo's form this time and how will he even be back after what happened previously ? Lilith is the key. We'll see what she plans for Sanctuary and her beloved children.

“Nephilim” means “Fallen Ones” and is a Judei-Christian term for the unnatural offspring giants if angels and human women. So now they slightly alter the spelling make them the übermench deus ex machina heroes? Lame. I find it odd how the games after the original bastardized what made the first Diablo game stand out from all of its generic fantasy contemporaries . The first involved literally going to Hell to fight Satan. It was gothic horror and was barely set in a fantasy motif like the later installments. Even when you win the game, you lose. There are just forces so profoundly greater than mere mortals that defying them are futile. I loved that about the first game. Very few games have the balls to bring in Judeo-Christian mythology and pull no punches. They even wrote in a prominent member of the clergy succumbing to the corruption of The Devil and, not only sacrificing a king’s child to act as a mortal vessel for Satan to walk the earth, he led a group of “rescuers” to a slaughter. That’s some dark and twisted shit. Now? Generic high fantasy with some dumb alt-world religious mythos that sounds like a bad D&D campaign. It’s a shame what has become of this game.

That’s the problem... too much desire for “order”, expelling the “darkness” in vain hopes. But this effectively creates two volatile and opposite agents... like two chemical elements. Whenever they meet, disaster results. But the two, consciously or not, _want_ to meet, as they combine so well together. It’s the way the universe resists order and tends toward entropy. Combined, the Angels and the Demons form Nephalem, which are so powerful, like the original Anu before he separated himself (itself?) into two.

I know this is two years old.. But I just have to say my peace about Cain. He was my fav character out of the "good" characters in the Diablo series.. I was actually very upset when he was killed in D3. It really makes me wish we could somehow bring him back to life.. But I doubt that will happen. As for Lilith. I still have a feeling she wont be a enemy. But I am probably wrong. I am basing this on How she feels about the Nephalem and how protective she got in the game's lore of them. It would be very strange if she was the one to attack you based on that. Now, if she sees you as joining Inarius side then I guess I could see it. Now they could make it to where she is a enemy at first but then works with you ( or vise versa ) but I just do not see her wanting to kill her children due to how much of a protective rampage she went on when she found out Inarius was killing them. As for the Nephalem themselves. I feel Blizzard did go too far with it. If you think about it at the D3 point, more so at the end of it. Where basically already at god status... So they will have to come up with some way of the Great Evils and Angels to get boosted up somehow to compensate. However currently there is not a single thing that would make sense to boost them enough. So my guess is they will have to face other Nephalem at some point instead of the Demons and Angels.

Diablo 4: The protagonist of D3 absorbed a fragment of Diablo after his defeat. The fragment lay dormant until a small spark of Malthael was likewise absorbed. The fragment and the spark fight for dominance over the Nephalem hero. Fast forward 10 years after the events in RoS and Sanctuary is being torn apart by the manifestation of chaos, which is a side effect of Diablo and Malthael vying for control over the Nephalem. Hell and Heaven are being dismantled as those realms essentially begin to meld with Sanctuary. The Eternal Conflict, should it continue, would destroy everything, so a truce is reached. The new protagonist will be a base human, untouched by Demonic, Heavenly, or Nephalem lineage, and must rely on artifacts supplied by those two factions to help restore the balance. As each new chapter unfolds, either Malthael or Diablo gain more control over the Nephalem (depends on routes taken within each chapter), but the end result is the same: Diablo gains control of the heavenly powers of Malthael along with the Nephalem powers of the D3 protagonist, completely upsetting the balance of the entire damn thing. In a supreme act of desperation on the part of the three realms, paragons of each sacrifice themselves through some complex ritual (that the new protagonist helps gather shit for) that will restore the balance by resurrecting the original good and bad god dudes, who are then actually responsible for knocking Super Saiyan Diablo's dick in the dirt, and they then piss off forever to continue fighting each other, leaving a wrecked Sanctuary populated by normal humans to decide their own fate and rebuild, fully free of the meddling influence of both the heavenly host and the demonic dudes. Lots of side crap can be made as far as the realm of death and Necromancers, just so peeps that spent $15 on that stuff can feel vindicated for their expenditure.
