We did recognise the authority of the UN. For example, Switzerland based many sanctions against other countries on UN decisions even before joining the organisation. Recognising does not equal joining. We recognise the economic and military power of the USA without beeing a member state 😉

@@Andreas_42 That's a very poor comparison. The UN has no real power. But the entire foreign policy of Switzerland is based on the UN's definition of """neutrality"""? The UN is absolutely not neutral, by any means.

@@user-gr9fq9gt9w The comparison was there to remind you that recognising the authority of an organisation doesn't equal joining it, as well as showing that Switzerland has based sanctions on UN resulutions before joining the organisation. And please stop intentionally misrepresent my arguments. Neither did I write that the entire Swiss foreign policy is based on UN decisions nor that the UN itself is neutral or defines Swiss neutrality. Swiss neutrality is older then the UN and in it's current form based on the Hague Conventions of October 18th 1907.

Out of the neutral countries, the most interesting one is probably Turkmenistan. Turkmenistan became neutral under their first president Saparmurat Niyazov aka Turkmenbashi (leader of the Turkmen). They basically looked at their border with Iran, Afghanistan, the fact that they're a former Soviet republic means they'd have to deal with Russia and considering the need for stabilization and development in Central Asia, they recognized that being a permanently neutral country was the path to follow. They became neutral in 1995, and while they tout it as this incredible vote, it wasn't quite that. On December 12, 1995, there were 82 things on the agenda in the UN General Assembly, and Turkmenistan's neutrality was the last thing for the day, so it was more a quick "The First Committee already agreed to this, let's do a quick vote and go home" than an actual debate To celebrate neutrality, they built a golden statue of Niyazov on the top of a huge marble monument that spun so that it was always facing the Sun, to show that Niyazov's era was Turkmenistan's golden era. Niyazov envisioned neutrality as, among other things, making Turkmenistan a neutral venue for feuding parties to come and work out their differences. In the first five years of its neutrality, that was true as Turkmenistan hosted talks between warring parties from the Tajik and Afghan civil wars. But it made Niyazov's Turkmenistan a hermit kingdom. While Turkmenistan participates in Commonwealth of Independent States summits, Turkmenistan is an observer state. Same for the Organization of Turkic States, it's just an observer state.

The map at 2:13 is just....pain. There weren't three alliances during WWII, just the Allies and Axis. The Comintern dissolved in 1943 and it wasn't a full-on military alliance. Hungary (which ate Germany's puppet Slovak Republic in this map) was an ally of the Germans. Spain was under fascist Franco during WWII and was nominally neutral. Bulgaria was a fascist kingdom and an ally of the Germans. Norway was invaded by the Germans and had a collaborationist government, the Quisling regime. Finland was invaded by the Soviets, successfully fought back and kept most of their land, and fought against the Soviets again during the Continuation War with support from the Germans. And based on the borders in the Middle East, it looks like Turkey still has the Ottoman Empire, which of course was neither communist nor did Turkey keep the rest of the former Ottoman Empire after WWI.

And let‘s be real…as long as you are pro or against something bjt are not willing to go to rhe frontline yourself you will let someone else do the work… Americans would be way less motivated or less supportive of war if their goverment actually forces them on the front line…

Ireland in ww2; Allowed allied flight over donegal for the sake of convenience Smuggled allied pilots back to the war over the border while axis pilots were detained till the wars end Gave early weather reports which proved vital to the success of the D Day landings Thousands of Irish men went to fighr regardless of neutrality. You may be thinking, what about the "condolences"? This is a grossly over exaggerated event. De Valera observed the same diplomatic protocol he afforded the US when their president died. While Douglas Hyde did go to express actual condolences, this meeting was not goverment related and was only discovered to have happened recently. In reality, De Valera fought to have Jews included in our constitution while the rest of europe turned against them and after the was allowed a large group of Jewish refugees into the country. He has a forest in Israel named after him. Our neutrality was purely performative, violated countless times with pro ally bias.

I'll also add to this, Ireland waged a secret war against the Germans by literally hunting down every Nazi spy and sympathiser in the country. I'd recommend to anyone interested in reading Ireland's Secret War by Eoin McMenamin it's a very good read and reveals a lot of Ireland's involvement in WW2.

This is kinda not unpopular at all but actually the default view, isn't it? But nobody ever gets a choice to disband all militaries, the only choice any sovereign country ever has is to disband their own military while all other national armies continue to exist; and that's a very hard step to take, which explains why 90+% of countries have their own military.
