Why Are Some Americans Moving Out of the U.S.?

There's a new wave of Americans packing up and moving to Europe in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. A real estate broker specializing in international sales says Americans are moving because they can work remotely, to have more space and for a better work-life balance. One woman from Georgia decided to make the move because she was fed up with the cost of living in the states. The top destinations Americans are moving to are Greece, Italy and France.

It's not as bad as they're making it out to be. This is what happens when you're connected to technology 24/7. Before the internet was what it is today, you lived life stress free. The other part of this is people don't realize that Europe had even greater lockdown restrictions than the blue states they came from. Florida never had this problem as you were free to do whatever you pleased so I don't think it's about "politics" lol.

Since Biden took office, there seem to have been more unfavorable results in America. These results include effects on the markets, such as price declines and sharp increases in inflation, as well as bank failures. I wonder if the sudden increase in interest rates will help value investors or if it would be wiser to stay away from the stock and financial markets for the time being.

UK citizen here. It would be a more meaningful report if it didn't feature a couple moving from a ridiculously expensive city/State in the first place. Many people in the US would have to majorly downsize in terms of housing in Europe. Sure, housing isn't everything, but you have to compare it with the cost of living in various States and regions (not just big cities). Given the vastness and economic diversity of the US, using the "US as a whole" as a point of comparison, rather than individual States and even regions within States, doesn't really tell us much.

Healthcare is about profit (there will never be universal healthcare in America), education is about profit, politics is about money and who has the biggest influence lobbying those in Washington DC. Even the judicial system is for profit( bail and prison industrial complex). America is just such a toxic society, aside from the rampant gun violence and weekly mass shootings, there’s also the opioid epidemic and high suicide rates that’s not often spoken about. Practically nothing can get done in Washington DC without it turning into a partisan slugfest. The so called richest country in the world is failing its citizens. I don’t blame anyone for wanting to leave. I’m still young but as I age, I won’t rule out leaving as well.

Of course, you need written proof from a doctor or hospital for these benefits, which is easy to obtain. That’s what happens when you have a government that takes care of its people.

Quite a few things conveniently not mentioned: you will need insurance to cover any health expenses until you can opt in to the local health care, often you need to provide proof of funds that you have to support yourself until you get a job there, also sometimes even a return ticket is required. Customer service ain’t what it is in North America so be prepared for inflexible codified laws in contracts, tedious and frustrating bureaucracy and inconvenient office hours for various services. As a Canadian who went to live abroad for nearly 4 years, I could never get used to the overcrowded streets and air pollution and I learned to appreciate Canada, so I came back and I love home so much more.

I'm half English and half Portuguese, and i can i speak fluent Portuguese so the adaption was quite easy. I returned to the US for a while but the culture shock was just too big compared to what i've got used to in Europe. One thing is to experience America as a teen, another as an adult: healthcare, housing, the exploitative work culture, the superficial and vapid attitude many people have towards life, lack consumer rights, lack of transparency, lack of regulations... now don't get me wrong, European countries have lots of problems but they pale in comparison. I love America but i can't see myself raising a family there.

I completely understand, I left 4 years ago to the NL for some of the same reasons. And though I do miss a lot of stuff, like mountains and outdoors, it was 100% worth the move for peace of mind and less violence and racism. The Netherlands is pretty English speaking friendly, most people speak English and as long as you just put some effort into learning Dutch, they will appreciate it. But it is hard to get here, either you have to find a company that will sponsor you, marry a Dutch person or go to a university here and then find a job after. FAFSA will cover some Dutch universities if you need financial assistance. 👍
