I struggled to grow onions (big ones anyway) for years. Even though I live up north and grow long day onions, I applied all of your tips and info this year. The results were amazing! Softball sized onions and still growing strong. So glad I came across your content.

My fall-planted crops were slow to finish…over a month late. I attribute that mostly to the fact it was an unusually cloudy fall/winter. It’s cloudy today. I’m in Florida, and I notice when the sun’s not out.

I know you are Team Basketball Size Onions, but I like say, tennis ball size. Enough for a dish I am cooking. And our onions last year were like that size, and are storing like champs. I'm so pleased all around🤗

My onions are in the same boat... i'm guessing it's a due to a combo of the cooler winter and excess rain. They're nice and dark green, just not very large. I imagine they'll size up to a tennis ball or baseball.

I was feeling pretty disappointed in my onions but it seems I'm not the only one. I agree the colder than normal weather has slowed down the green growth and I have enough nitrogen in that soil to plant corn without adding any.

Good evening, Travis Id say your onions look just about like mine here in Montgomery County, Texas. Except you have no weeds 😊 Im out there every saturday weeding mine , its crazy . I even just bought this long weed puller , it can be used sitting on my rolling seat or make it longer for standing up ,which im looking forward to using this saturday. We have about 325 onions growing and that will hopefully get us to next year , as last week 1 onion at Walmart cost us $1.76 Even at Sams club for a big bag of only 8 onions they are charging $8.89 . So glad we grew a few extra this past November. Last years were huge , Ive fed them weekly & water everyother day .... God bless you & the family . Mrs josette Montgomery County, Texas 🙏

This is my second year, and I’m apparently on the wrong schedule. I started my onions seeds indoors 3/5 and plan to transplant after last frost. That’s how I did it last year, and harvested decent sized onions in July. But based on yours, looks like I should be planting in the fall. 😂 new gardener here!

One thing onions hate is weed competition. Probably more so than any other garden plant. Keep those weeds out of the patch. And sometimes they really increase bulb size later in the season when it is not expected. The last two weeks can be the best production. Not always, just sometimes. Just keep them in the ground until they say they are done.

Agree about spooning onions. I watched a video a few yrs back by a lady telling how to grow big onions. Spooning was one of the things she recommended, but she had several things she recommended and i do not do any of them. After watching i said to myself, i guess i will not grow big onions and be satisfied with my medium sized onions.

Can I still get another crop of onions if I planted more slips this week? Or will the daylight cause the crop to be substandard?

Last year you commented the neighbor’s onions who didn’t have as good shoots as yours. You guessed maybe he planted his 2 weeks early. Did you maybe plant yours too early for this year’s weather? Too cold. You had basketball sized ones last year and been doing it quite successfully for a while. Not sure what your growing window is for planting. I think they are supposed to grow from seed in the winter, then they take off when they are ready. You used Nature Safe Fert last year, but claim that’s not it.
