    That chicken run is so nice!! We get pretty darn cold here in NE oklahoma. I have a 14x16 coop with a south door only. Hubs is going to put me a light ant large plugin out there for more convenience. We have a run about the same size as the coop. I have 29 total. I'm gonna cull my 2 roos they are so big and not nice. My silver wyandotte is slightly smaller and nice to the hens. I wish we had more outside enclosed run.

    I kept my old chickens in their run until about 10:30am. They'd lay about 10am like clockwork every morning. I had a curtain made of shade cloth on the run for privacy, and adter they laid, I'd go out, collect the eggs, and then let them go outin the yard. Thy had a pretty high protien diet, as we have earthworms and earwigs here they'd eat. All my girls would lay an egg most every day. One would lay an extra occassionally. I was concerned about the girl that laid 2 about once a week. I guess it's OK, but I wondered if it wasn't too much for her body, so I gave extra protein and made sure she had oyster shell available 24/7. We have some bad preditors here, and I lost them, so this new set is going to be in the run, unless I can be right there with them, and only when they get older. Losing chickens to preditors is horrible. I misd those girls.

    You have alot of information that you impart in a short time. I wish I could talk that fast or at least listen as fast as you talk, LOL. Sometimes I have to back up the video to rewatch parts to be sure I didn't miss anything you're saying. I really wish you would not slam yourself as I've heard you do it in other videos also. I don't know what kind of monsters have at least wrongly verbally abused you in your young life, but I suspect that has happened, making you say terrible things about yourself. I'm glad you turn the camera on you so we can put a lovely face to match your voice . I'm sad that apparently not enough folks have let you kids know that you are indeed a beautiful girl, so why wouldn't anyone want to to look at your face? Don't ever forget that we are all unique + God loves everyone + made each of us a little different from each other, otherwise we wouldn't be able to recognize each other if we all looked exactly the same. It is our spirit + personality that makes us the most dear to those who have the love of Jesus in their hearts. We should try to ignore the twisted attitudes of the personality disordered folk of the rest of the population. I love your spirit ; + your personality is great, as you are enthusiastic about caring properly for your birds + I admire your dedication to them + to providing good information that helps us , the newbies especially to know how to handle problems that are likely to crop up. I hope you will continue to talk face to face on the camera , as I find it is makes your videos more endearing , personally. I find you to be a very lovable friendly person + watching your videos make me feel that I have just spent time visiting with a friend. Keep up the interesting filming of your girls. They are lucky to be under the wing of a good mother hen like you. I aspire to be as attentive to my first time pullet flock when they arrive as day old chicks May 4th. Since it's still chilly here, I'm reluctantly letting my feathered babies stay with a more experienced chick raiser till they are fully feathered + able to be outside all night. I intend to go down to where they are growing every day, however , to get them comfortable with me. My husband isn't at all happy that I have ordered 5 different breeds, a total of 13 ( a baker's dozen). He took care of 200 hens when he was a young boy + has had his fill of chickens. I've had to convince him for about a year that they'd be a good idea to have. My Dad had a few hens when I was very small, + I only remember that they were wiped out in what we figure was a racoon attack 😢. I had roosters when I was a teenager as pets, but hens are way more complicated to keep healthy. I've always loved birds, + wish I could let them loose on our lawn. But we live in rural area where everything from coyotes to eagles are a threat to anything that small. I have a terrier mix type dog +an indoor cat that I have to leash because they would haul them away almost as easily as they would the chicks I've ordered. BTW, I have 3 Barred Rocks, 3 Buff Orpingtons, 3 black Australorps, 2 light brahmas, + 2 silver Wyandottes coming. I originally didn't think I'd mind an accidental rooster, but have heard that if they have hens nearby, they can have mean temperments, so I won't cry if I don't get any in error. The worst thing to me is the pecking order, because I don't want to see anything injured. If I get any real meanies , I will give them away rather than let them torture their coop mates. Thanks for sharing. Dont forget Psalm 139:14 : Everyone on Earth is fearfully + wonderfully made. Our bodies are formed by God in His own image, + our souls are the most special part of us. But take it from a 67 year old grammie, you are a fine looking young woman + you should show your very pretty face more often on the screen. I consider everyone to be a friend until they prove otherwise. But my faithful love of Jesus causes me to care about everyone from their soul's core thru the outward shell that is their flesh. Affectionate virtual hugs to you + yours 🤗, even naughty Nugget. 🐔 I pray that she will not pick on any more of your flock. It would be sad to lose such a pretty colored hen . Is she a Buff Orpington by chance? They are usually so docile ; it must be that she needs more protein + snack related activities to keep her busy. Idle beaks are the Devil's workshop- LOL . God bless you.

    I bought a house with 28 acres. Three guinea males and two Buff Orpington hens came with it. I have never owned chicken but always wanted to so I was thrilled to be a "chicken tender". Since we moved in (Mid December) neither of the hens have laid an egg. I have bought all sorts of treats and they are very friendly towards me so it isn't a fear thing. They were free-range but my husband hated stepping in their poop so I had to move them into an enclosed chicken run and coop. All five walked right in and seemed very happy for a few days but I noticed the guineas started chasing each other and stirring up trouble, so I let them out. The hens are now free of the boys but still no eggs. Is there a way to tell the age of a hen and if they are old, will they ever lay eggs or should I just get some chicks and start a new flock?

  • @realsimplemama

    @realsimplemama

    Hi! Well first of all, congratulations and welcome to the world of chicken tending! And it sounds like you have great instincts too. I’ll also say that getting chicks is never a bad idea especially if you have the space and the time. But maybe don’t listen to me because I’m not a good influence! Here are a few things you can do to check if your girls are of laying age (but you can’t tell exactly how old they are very easily). Do they do a chicken squat/bow when you get close? How many hours of daylight are they getting right now? Do they have access to calcium? Are they on a layer feed that’s always available to them? Let me know and we will go from there. theMama@realsimplemama.com 🐓❤️

    I got 2 red hens at 12 weeks old mid June- still laying eggs except for the last month. Only one is laying (?) they free range if they want- we have lots of snow so I scatter straw n they either do or they don’t. One had sour crop in September - she’s molting more than the other... I’m told that under a year old they’ll lay all winter. After a year not so much, taking the winter off. Is this normal?

  • @realsimplemama

    @realsimplemama

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hmmm. Mine just turned a year old and haven’t laid consistently. It’s possible with less sun/shorter days that they’ll lay less even though they’re young, and they’ll definitely not lay if they’re starting to molt. That’s really hard on their little bodies!

    Oh that’s so sad. I totally get it - my chickens are not my livelihood so I can spoil them - and it’s true that they eat every day even when I get nothing! But for me, eggs are a great bonus and not a necessity. They’re pets and they’re my feathered family! You can also look up “battered hens” to see how you can adopt older hens from egg factories. Those girls are killed in all kinds of ways when they’re not “productive” enough. My dream is to have a rescue for those older girls!

    Hello, I've been having a hard time keeping a diary on my chickens. I've been looking for six different color leg bands, so I can identify my six hens separate from each other. They're all the same breed, they're all the same color, they all look the same to me still. I expect they're all going to be laying the same color eggs too when they start laying. I can't seem to find a package of six different color leg bands. Do you have any other ideas as to how to mark or how to I identify each of my chickens? Thanks for your ideas in advance.

    Question - I've been sprouting (organic non gmo) seeds for my hens but they look at them and walk away. Why?! I've tasted them - they're good. They also don't like watermelon, cukes, cabbage, or bananas. I don't understand bc I read where other people feed these things to their chickens. So far, other than their base food, they'll only eat sunflower and black soldier fly larvae. Would love to hear your take on this - thanks :)

    Chickens honestly do not have that strong of a sense of taste or smell, so maybe they just think it looks weird? Could you maybe mix the sprouts in with some of the treats that they are used to, and then each time you do it just lessen the ratio a bit?
