Why are motorhome insurance premiums rising?

In this episode of the Motorhome Matt podcast, Matt and Keith tackle what could be causing the rising costs of motorhome insurance premiums.
We dive into key causes like supply chain issues, labour shortages, increased energy and fuel costs, and global events like the war in Ukraine, Brexit, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Plus, we get insights from Ripe, an award-winning insurance company, to shed light on these factors.
In the Q&A, Matt answers your questions on reinstating a C1 entitlement after giving it up at 70, clarification on toll road classifications for motorhomes and leaving your motorhome fridge door open.

Hi Matt. We are 4.25 tonnes but under 3 m tall. Our friends have the same Autotrail Commanche as mentioned in the question. We have only ever paid "Classe 2" toll charges. If, on the rare occasion, a higher class charge has been displayed, we press the help button and say "Camping Car, s'il vous plait". The price is then adjusted to Classe 2, we pay, barrier raises and we're on our way. We've been travelling in Europe for 10 years.

I reached the age of 70 two years ago I required a medical which got from a private examination and a eye test with my optician, If I wish to keep it I will need to go through the same process next year as it’s required every three years.

I’m guessing you’re referring to your C1 entitlement on your driving licence? If so that’s correct

Hi. I'm searching for insurance premiums at the moment and must admit I have found your pod cast useful as I found my A Class was insured to the bare minimum when in Europe (we'll be changing that!). However I thought I would try Ripe as mentioned on your podcast. However when I filled in the initial details they came back that they were unable to quote as I had credit issues. I checked with them and they couldn't tell me why which was quite frustrating as I have never had issues with any type of credit. I'm generally seen as a safe bet.

Thank you for your kind words. Have you checked your credit file with Experian or similar? There may be a mistake on it causing this issue. Ripe wouldn’t be able to see your file only your score and ranking. You would need to check this yourself. You can do this for free with the app Credit Karma Thanks for watching!

Cat 3 over 3m high and over 3.5T . What cat 3.8T but under 3m tall? You never mentioned this situation.

CAT 2 Vehicle with overall height from 2 to 3 metres and GVW not exceeding 3.5 tonnes - Train with overall height from 2 to 3 metres and GVW of towing vehicle not exceeding 3.5 tonnes CAT 3 - Vehicle with overall height of 3 metres or more - Vehicle with GVW of more than 3.5 tonnes So at under 3m but over 3.5t you are CAT 3.

Thanks but still makes no sense as CAT 3 - Vehicle with overall height of 3 metres or more - Vehicle with GVW of more than 3.5 tonnes So at under 3m but over 3.5t you are CAT 3. It states 3m or more Surelly it would not mention height if it was all about weight. At 2.99m will just over inflate my tyres then everybody will be happy.

I had assumed it was either criteria. But I’ve seen comments that folk in a sub 3m over 3.5t motorhome when charged CAT3 press for help and state in French, camping car please and the fee is dropped to CAT2. One to try?

I just visited the link on Ripe and was disappointed that they are not insuring campervans that are also daily drives (an increasingly popular choice for campervan owners). Can you recommend any companies that do?

  • @MotorhomeMatt

That’s interesting. I guess it’s about risk profile. But I will check with them. You could try Caravan Guard too but you may need to look at a lesser policy that treats your Campervan more like a car… but check that it’s insured adequately

Hi Matt, I'm soon going to buy a nearly-new WildAx Altair and am just investigating insurance prior to the purchase. It comes with a Meta Trak tracker (just finding out which). Any advice on investing in an alarm or any other tips to keep insurance costs down?

  • @MotorhomeMatt

Personally I think an alarm is a waste of money. They just get ignored. I would go for as much visible and physical security as you can. Decent wheel clamp, steering wheel lock etc. but be mindful that if the insurer requires these items to be fitted this may include when on a campsite. Check out our previous episode with Caravan Guard where we talk insurance and what an underwriter may require. I would also spec a thatcham approved tracker with remote starter motor disable. Maybe S5 or even S7 spec. If you call Ripe Insurance use this link to save 25% mhmp.info/ripeinsurance Enjoy your Wildax!
