7.5 LAKH students left India for Foreign Universities in 2022 - a near 70% increase over last year. Most of them - never to return.
What's driving this massive surge towards foreign shores? Is it lack of jobs in India or sad state of higher education?
What happens to these students with increasing geopolitical tensions and increasing racism abroad? Also is the dollar dream REALLY so Green - or there is a dark future here too????

As an engineer in UK after studying here, though the medical here is not upto any standards, the quality of life and the savings I can send back is monumental. I can confirm that the quality of education I received here in 1 year was significantly better than my 4 years of engineering. I struggled to get a job as a graduate in India but got a job even before I graduated in UK... Speaks levels about the experience outside our education and economic system.

west promotes business which creates more jobs which gives more opportunities to people from other countries. India and Indian only look for job which is limited because not many interested in creating one this is also a failure from govt side also by not encouraging people to start business. Students have better chance to get job in west when they study in their college that's also a reason to go there.

It really doesn't have to do with the present leadership. I got a PhD in space sciences from a leading university in the US, tried coming to work for ISRO about 6 years back, and they asked me to take GATE to be "eligible" without even considering my resume. The system is broken beyond the government. India only makes sense if you are majoring in CS, EE, or business.

Currently in the US. Hence giving my point of view. 1) here, although tuition fees can seem high due to currency exchange values you can get scholarships (both merit and means based) and university funds through TA/GRA jobs ($12-15/hr @ 20 hrs/week). That is a big difference in how you can fund your education here. The loan from Indian banks becomes more like a buffer rather than a lifeline. 2) you can do summer and fall internships (6-7 months). This adds to your funds available 3) the ratio of annual salary to education cost is 2-3x. That is on the lower side. While in India that ratio is ~0.75-1.5x. This means that you can pay off your education loan in less than a year in the US while in India it can take 2-3 years. (Assuming you are tight on your expenses and only spending on basic necessities- rent, utilities, groceries and travel for first few years after college) 4) Although inflation has gone up in last 2-3 years, your monthly groceries expenses will not exceed beyond 2-3%. Since you will have to buy a car here to commute, travel expenses including your car EMI+ Insurance + fuel will not exceed 10% (depending on your APY and tenure). Only rent fluctuates depending on the city you live in. It can vary anywhere from 10-30%. In India, monthly groceries will usual cost about 10-12% of your monthly salary (considering 50-60k which is slightly above mean salaries). Rent can easily cross 40-50% of your salary (considering places like Bangalore with 20-25k for a 1 bhk now. Maybe lower depending on your location. But it will never be below 20%.) add travel using a 2 wheeler which is affordable but your fuel expenses will add up. 5) here you are not pigeonholed into certain roles based on your education. For example, I have seen people with M Ed working in Marketing or even Architecture. In India, M Ed is only for teaching jobs or getting a higher secondary level teaching job vs only high school levels. 6) Although US now ranks lower in R&D spending vs GDP ratio and ranks lower in number of original papers (China is highest right now I think) it still spends 6% of its GDP in education. That’s ~9x of what India spends. (Hence the university funds for TA/GRA jobs which helps with your education fees) There is definitely struggle here. Getting a job after graduation, getting a good salary to service your loan, getting an immigrant visa sponsorship and finally your GC (which is currently 100 years 😅). But overall you get to experience a lot and it adds to your profile. You’ll not remain in debt with your education loan if you decide to move back to India. Or try some other countries for immigration. Every immigrant struggles through this. Also you get to know people from other countries especially ones from our neighbouring countries who are also struggling with you. Long post I guess but I would encourage people to try for masters outside if not bachelors.

While sending kids abroad for undergraduate (or masters) is usually extremely expensive, going for PhD is free (scholarship) and may be better for future career.

No one would want to be with us talk with us, well be ignored and hates even when making Iit to other countries, due to strong stereotypes like no regard for rules, fake passport, illegal immigrants coming through border crossing and who knows what else. I came here (abroad) as an educator and started doing various roles in school and advanced into admin jobs and learned so much in few yrs that it felt like my brain had few glitches. Education even though isn’t perfect and has it’s own flaws but is so much better than our country. Students go out of secondary school with work experience, CV and scholarships they can avail. There is so much focus on practical skills development and application of knowledge. The system of teaching is absolutely different and sometimes takes a while for a teacher to adjust. Rote learning is never encouraged here and so many techniques help students learn and retain information without spending loads of time. They train teachers well for it and pay is better than engineers in IT companies in India, if you’re able to perform and loads more holidays are there to balance work and family life. However, learning seamless communication and advanced tech skills is the key alongside being adaptable.

As a PU student I love studying Sanskrit. It is a beautiful language to study. However I can't ignore learning English as it's very important for my higher studies. My taughts are that the government should not make any language compulsory for degree students and let them learn the language of their choice. If they really want they will learn Sanskrit without any force. Ps no offence to anyone.

As a current resident of US, I can say that the market is tough but at the same time if you work hard you will definitely find someone who appreciates your talent. I came to the US back in 2018 for my Masters, 1 year of education here is way way more than what I learnt in 4 years. When I graduated in 2019 the economy was good and so there were plenty of jobs. Even after the current layoffs, people do not want to go back and are finding legal alternatives to stay in the country and bounce back in the job market. This says alot about the situation in India.

Things I noticed in the US education system that’s different from the mainstream Indian education: 1. Partnership between the communities and the local school: - every school has a resource officer who is basically a cop that directs traffic into and out of the school and visits the school daily. - local stores partner with the local school to make money for the school as well as for the store. Parents are encouraged to buy stuff and name the school they want to support and part of the proceeds go to the school. - schools encourage giving to the local community by motivating students and parents to donate stuff from their house or buy groceries and they donate those to local food pantries (basically places where poor people can go and get groceries for free) 2. Students are encouraged to be creative and entrepreneurship is highly encouraged. 3. Community service and involvement is one of the requirements to get into colleges. How you differentiate yourself from other students is usually what gets you admissions into good universities. Higher education is highly competitive because of the high acceptance rate for international students as they bring in more money.

Initially u wil find tough but once savings starts it will be easier.. If ur employee working in good company they pay 2500 to 3000 monthly pounds.. If u living here alone even if married u can easily save monthly 1000 to 1500 pounds.. If living with family then u can hardly save 500 pounds.. Am married but living in sharing accommodation here family lives in india and within 2yrs I have saved almost 20 - 25 lac.. If u go to usa there savings are higher. Uk is less but still am happy... I remember as I graduated from my bachelors in 2020 from a local college in my city (aggregated by NAAC), the average package one could get was 15k per month and the job offer i received was almost the same, I instead decided to makey cv look more attractive and instead worked as an intern in a much bigger company, but turns out where i was paid just 5k as monthly compensation only to have been worked day and night until my term. Currently I'm studying my masters and working here as a working student at an MNC in Germany where i believe that i feel a lot more respected in terms of not just pay but also the treatment that happens to us and more than just that, the learning one can achieve through their work. I can tell you that it isn't the "anti nationalism" that makes us move, but rather our talents not being rewarded the same and its a shame that we say such great things about our country to other countrymen from here while we cannot imagine to lead a future with the ones we love back home just because of negligence by the authorities who should've done their job better for the future of the country.

I study in IIT Kharagpur a first year undergraduate most of us talk about leaving India from the very beginning, we thought since we are in iit we will top notch curriculum but believe the curriculum is really outdated, most of things that attracts job are done by student themselves.

  • @honeysup

    @honeysup

    8 ай бұрын

IIT curriculum was designed to train you in the basics of the respective engineering branch, it is not supposed to be designed or to be aligned with the job (curriculums in educational institutes are never designed with this as a primary goal). Thereby it does not change so frequently (as fundamental concepts does not change so fast) although often people demand rapid updates based on rapid change in certain technical areas in the market. So in essence the curriculum is not outdated, rather it is exactly what it is supposed to be. Although often young students think differently because of sheer lack of knowledge. On the other hand, whether you will get the job or not entirely depends upon the economic and industrial strength of the country. During 1960 lots of IIT graduates were unemployed as Industry still didn't pick up in India. After slowly the condition changed because of the rapid industrialization of the country.

For doing PhD in India, Most of the top universities wants students who have already qualified ugc net/jrf exams. There is a vast difference in cut off marks among general candidates and candidates belonging to OBC/ST/SC. Many students scores almost 70-75% in papers(general candidates) but they were not not selected. in case of sc/st candidates, if they secure 45-50%, still they qualify for NET/JRF. In India, your Research innovation matters less than this UGC NET examination. 2nd one is lack of motivation to do new research and guidance by faculty members sitting in central universities. Third one is very less fellowship and facilities for Research scholars

I don't mean to offend someone but don't deserving students deserve better ? Only then brilliant minds will rise . Most of the quota Students who don't study will get admission in top universities and will benefit nothing , because they don't want to study . So I thought of doing my masters from one of the best universities of UK (top 100 in the world) in the hope of getting a good job in the UK or at least a good paying job back in India. Fast forward to 2022 I applied to 1500+ jobs in the UK and got around 10 interviews. Interviews went amazingly well but they always seem to prefer candidates where they didn’t need to sponsor the visa. I felt lost and came back to India in the hope of getting atleast a 12LPA job in India but apparently no one wanted me to pay that. So now I am working (overworking) at a startup that pays me INR 35,000 per month and the worst part is that there are no new jobs in the market and even with a master’s degree from top university in the world the job I got sucks. 😢

What you said is absolutely true. High time, the youth in India come together and fight for those issues which will make a positive difference in their lives. Any change will have to come from them only Support their colleagues who have the courage to challenge the status quo I am sure if there is a mass movement, the governing class will be compelled to change. It will not be easy. Hate and bravado will not get us anywhere or uplift the masses.

I believe parents should also get counseling on employability and different sectors so that they may guide their children and help children follow their goals. We as new age parents should accept the need for such a knowledge.

Your idea is good. But its just part of the solution. The elephant in the room is our kids not getting proper primary education, enough school students not going to colleges, high dropout rate and low quality education. Education, Education Education!!! We all have to talk about it. This is not a quick solution, but if not now, NEVER.

My father's backward mind has hampered my career a lot. I asked my father to send me to VIT or some metro city college in 2014. Some of his friends gave him the idea that don't send girls away from home. Had to start my career from 3.3LPA. Reached 7.5 recently after 4 yrs of career. Still lagging a lot behind. Sometimes parents stand in the way. The coming times are full of competition. My friends who has good support from parents are way ahead of me. They get good suitors. My father cant even face me now.

I will share what worked for me in this environment. Step 1: Self assessment - What are your behavioural attributes and what kind of jobs are there in the market against your natural calling 2. Skill Mapping - once you have done the assessment of self and found what suits, map your skills against the relevant work you seek and upskill where you lack 3. Projects - Work on projects in the field of interest and make your resume more presentable 4. Analyze environment - See what is the industry where you will flourish the most and plan for it well. Remember this all is not a one day exercise, you will have to invest a lot of time and research a lot to get the information on what works for you.

Let's just *force* our talented students to seek education abroad because, you know, we don't need their skills and expertise here, right?
