Quite frankly I'm sick of skepticism, I must be the only one that actual attempts to focus on the enjoyable parts of wrestling shows instead of for example rating a show on whether or not a certain wrestler winning. I also agree with the whole idea of not putting wellness policies into storylines, it pretty much lowers the importance of the system and makes it a complete joke.

The USDA found drugs in Lesnars system during his UFC bullshit yet he's able to go on SummerSlam, take his 3 bumps, and get his 6 figures for a 2 star match...and if the shit he tried to do to Jericho backstage was real than the wellness policy is bullshit

It is bull, but Lesnar isn't subject to the Wellness Policy. He's not a full time wrestler, so the Wellness Policy doesn't apply to him. It's absolutely terrible that he doesn't have to comply with the policy, but that's why he hasn't gotten in trouble, because WWE doesn't want their favorite guy in trouble so they pretend he just didn't do anything wrong...

Wellness policy should apply to everyone, I don't care if it's full or part time, if you fail it then off you go mate for 30 days or whatever. Vince shouldn't be making exceptions for anyone.

MoonlightStrider I completely agree, I was just adding what loophole they're using to excuse Brock. It SHOULD apply to everyone, but it only applies to full time wrestlers, which is my personal biggest gripe with the damn policy.

Mike Leoci I think a big part of that might also be the legacy of kayfabe, and the utter hiding of the worked status for decades, to the point where it might have been considered a fraudulent scam. To this day there's those that consider all wrestling promoters con men, instead of looking at them as theatre producers (which is what they really are).

You have to click the Gear Button next to the Subscribe button and click the "All" option so the content creator's videos show up in our sub box. Just saying because KZread is at it again and they are apparently phasing out Subscribing all together and making it harder for us to see some videos. Idk it's a mess. Good video btw!

Hey Brian, it is so tough to stay away from being skeptical when you follow all the videos and shoot interviews. One thing that helps me stay in the kayfabe mode while watching is following it with my wife. She is a casual fan and it helps if I actively get involved with her about stuff I might have an idea what's gonna happen due to spoilers I've seen. That's the beauty of wrestling. I know where it's leading me but together we follow along and I get lost in it with her.

I would disagree that WWE more recent efforts to blur lines of work/shoot to be a bad thing or unhealthy for fans. I grew up 100% believing in kayfabe. It was a magic moment in my life. Growing up and with the death of kayfabe wrestling has not been the same. However recently I feel that spark come back to life. Never being sure what real and what is not. Few years ago I rarely talked wrestling with my other wrestling friends. But it seems like almost every PPV me and my friends are caught up in excited conversation of "Was this real ? did that really happen ?" Video potrays conversation of "Is this a Shoot ? Is this a work" as being corrosive to the fan experience, but I dont feel that way. I feel as if its the revival of kayfabe. People so caught up in the story that they are invested in conversations of things being real or fake. For years that conversation didn't exist. It was fake, end of conversation. This has been one of my favorite wrestling years in recent memory. And that is exclusively due to the pure enjoyment I feel every time a shoot/work pops up and I get to talk to others about theories and what exactly happened. Overall I see zero reason to shame people for saying "Its a Work". The fun and important part is the conversation. If 100% people thought it was a shoot, or 100% thought it was a work there would be no conversation. Fun part is everyone being unsure, some people taking shoot side, some taking work side. Neither are right or wrong and often we just never find out the truth. So lets not attack others in our community. Lets just enjoy this new kayfabe together. Some may believe events are shoots, some may believe they are works, but together we can engage in fun conversations together as fans experiencing kayfabe once again.

Sometimes I think for me it's a way to try and figure out the outcome of the storylines... I know that sucks. Also, with the introduction of the network and programs like Total Divas it takes all the piss out of things. Example, Paige and Alicia Fox are feuding on Raw but I see a preview of TD and their BFF's. Also, I have learned to really respect people like Y2J who, when a heel doesn't sell Merch, doesn't incorporate social media, etc.I want to feel legitimate emotions like excitement, anger, sadness when I watch. Hell a good current example of blurred lines was all the "Breaking News" surrounding ADR & Paige!!!

One of the things that I did that renewed my love for wrestling was to stop reading the dirt sheets. "What's WWE planning for the next 6 months" and stuff like that. I was never surprised or anything. Since I stopped reading those I've had a much better experience. I completely agree with you regarding the wacky vs realism. I have a hard time understanding why people like Undertaker, Kane, or Bray Wyatt wrestle. When the Undertaker was the American BA that made sense, but I can't figure out why an undead creature would want the WWE Championship so bad. A promotion that does let you check your brain at the door and just have a good time is Chikara. The characters are very colorful and I don't mind that they're not "real".

I'm so glad someone finally said it. Wrestling fans always ruin their own experiences by worrying about the "backstage politics" & what goes on behind the curtain, but then bitch & moan when they're not surprised or excited by anything. If fans quit concerning themselves with all that & actually try to enjoy themselves instead of worrying, wondering & stressing, they might have a good time. If you have a favorite movie or tv show, you don't worry about the lives of the actors & actresses or what goes on behind the scenes or who'll be pushed as the next big character, you watch & enjoy. Wrestling fans are their on worst enemy, yet they always blame the talent or the company. Stop trying to be "smart fans" & just be fans because seriously, "smarks" are WAY worse then the "you know it's not real, right?" non-fans.

When I watch, I do everything I can to suspend my disbelief and let the story and performers take me on a ride. My favorite thing is when I get legitimately worked, with the most recent example being Kevin Owens' look of complete shock when winning the Universal Title. Part of me truly believed it was decided on the fly right then and there, and Owens, Hunter, and Rollins are all to thank for that. I avoid the trap of saying "It's a work." Because I just want to fall into Kayfabe and let it wash over me. Of course I still listen to the podcasts and watch the KZread videos and read the articles that break down how everything was put together, but I do the same for movies and comics too.

Then progressively he became smarky and my name literally has the word 'smarky' in it lol.

So what if they decided to give themselves a character to play, they still probably know more about wrestling than most.

This type of stuff sadly has hit some indy shows lately as well. last event I went to was dead quite any time I would applaud you could hear it across the room. The only time the crowd would cheer anything was when there was a high impact move. I do feel some fans have become more difficult to entertain and I am not sure how we could solve it. I think having an off season for wrestling could work. This will give fans a break so when it does come back it gives them something to look forward to.

Honestly a lot in Wrestling is real. When someone like Daniel Bryan wins the title(s), like he did at WM 30, we know, that he didn't win because he won a real fight, but because the company finally realized (kinda) how good and important he is. The same was true for Sasha or now Kevin Owens recently (although on a smaller scale obviously). The chant "YOU DESERVE THIS!" says it all, because it is actually a breach of kayfabe by the fans. No one chants "You deserve this!" to a sprinter who just won gold at Olympia, to a Boxer that won the belt or to a football team that won the Superbowl.

Like all live theater, film, television, etc., without good stories, talent, and resolution, the patrons of said art will force themselves to look to some different facets of said artwork so as not to let themselves believe they've just wasted their time and money. WWE is no different. They go through spells with a plethora of talent, which in turn supports a broader range of story angles and epic resolution. As the talent pool grows shallow, you have to rely more on the simple and borderline effective; you can no longer go for "epic." During one such lull, THE INTERWEBS came along, and fan immersion was complete. Any bit of information, regardless of how minute, was easily accessible. This, in turn, took the ability to properly pace story development out of the hands of the bookers. This "cynicism" is the result. The sad part: You cannot un-ring that bell. Anyway, excellent video, as always, Brian. Cheers.

The pro wrestling fan of 2016 is a bizarre creature. He knows it's pre-determined, but still wants to talk about it as if it's a legitimate sport. He gets so emotionally invested in fictional characters, but also wants to know as much as possible about the real person playing that character. There seems to be this weird self-loathing mentality ingrained in the modern day wrestling fan. He doesn't want to be fooled, so he doesn't put himself in a position to be surprised in the first place. That doesn't allow you to enjoy the product. For some reason, suspending belief at a wrestling show can't be done the same way as when at the movie theatre. There are so many factors as to why pro wrestling isn't as enjoyable as it once was, and at the root of that, is the wrestling fan ruining it for himself. Dirt sheets and rumor sites are there, but you can choose to avoid them. Shoot interviews are out there, but you can choose to avoid them. The more you dive into those things, the less enjoyable it becomes. The wrestling fans who are the happiest, are the same ones who have never heard of Wrestlezone, Wrestling Inc, or Kayfabe Commentaries.

WCW and WWF were doing faux-shoots in the Monday Night Wars and WWE has kept it going with the stuff you mentioned. Someone once described WWE's faux-shoots as "Everything is fake...except for what you're watching right now!" It's like someone saying "I admit I'm a liar, but this time I'm telling the truth!" Smark cynicism is a natural byproduct of that. Things inspired by reality like The Authority or Hardy-Edge are fine by themselves, but when mixed with faux-shoot injuries, etc. it makes the audience feel like WWE is insulting the fans intelligence.

When I watch wrestling I just enjoy it for what it is. While I'll still point things out I didn't like, or skip certain promos (already bored of Orton & Wyatt), and discuss potential storylines, for the majority of the time I just take it as escapism. Yeah it may be "fake", but I like the characters, the way stories are told (it makes a change to a film or a book), and can appreciate the athleticism that's on show. While people who do love something are the most critical of it as well, you need to take time to appreciate it as well.

I really liked your opinion on this, Zane, and i totally agree. Well, i would have a topic for you to discuss and i woud really like your opinion on it, because in my eyes it is a very large problem today and it got worse in the last months. Would be awesome if you replied: Dean Ambrose was Roman Reigns sidekick for over 2 years, after being screwed over time and time again he finally got the big one and everyone liked him. 2 Months later they loathe him for no specific reason and want AJ Styles to win the belt (Considered AJ is a heel... means he is not really doing a good job there). And it's not that Dean was bad he had pretty decent matches besides SummerSlam. The same goes for Roman Reigns: After he defeated Sheamus for the title he was cheered with one of the loudest pops i have heard since 2012, and not only 1 month later the fans hate him to a degree wich is very hard for me to describe with words. Is it possible that heels today are the only ones who can hold to a belt for over 4 months? New day had to turn heel to be believable as champs, same goes for charlotte. Then now we have Rusev, KO, Miz and Styles who are all heels, too. Is this a bad sign that fans turn on babyfaces way too fast? Maybe because they think it is too predictable when a face will win? I really think this is a bad trend.

One thing that pissed me off lately was on the Wrestling news world message boards during Lesnar vs. Orton at Summerslam., So many people on there legitimately hate Lesnar due to his part time/not giving a crap status, to the point where they actually thought he was shooting on Orton, when it was very clearly a work and complaining about how he should be fired. So I think your point goes both ways, not accepting fake stuff for being fake and the real stuff for being real.

The cynicism originates from the end of the Attitude Era and the Invasion Arc for numerous reasons. But the skepticism hit its stride with the PG Era, cause how is this gonna be a wrestling show starring wrestlers if you can't say ass or show blood or tell compelling stories, lest the children (or parents who grew up w/ a more mature product) get offended?! It's insulting as a fan tbh...

no disrespect is intended, because I'm a fan of your channel, and have been for a while. it seems like youtube, podcasts, and social media is to blame. it's the wise ass/smart ass fans who are to blame. the way i see it when I was 10, and first started watching wwe in 2001 there was no youtube, no shoot interviews, no podcasts, etc. if i wanted to know something about wrestling I would learn it by watching a wwe show. if i were to start watching now, not only do I have unlimited access to all this knowledge/terminology that us fans were really never meant to know, I also have a fb or Twitter to post whatever I like, learn, or dislike to the whole world. we live in an Era where everybody is self entitled even with the most petty shit. how much unnecessary non sense has been tweeted about Roman reigns? again no disrespect, but we have so many geeks and dweebs who wanna be know it alls, and influence other people's opinions on a topic such as wrestling. it might be just my perception, but I feel like only the real hardcore fans care about in ring action/work rate. the more casual fans care about the drama, and story telling because it's something to keep you around. that's why the attitude Era was so successful, because there were casual fans ever because of the enticing television between all the shows. wwf, wcw, and ecw had great story telling, but none of those people could really do what people like finn baler, or sami zayn, or even a Daniel bryan, but the shows were better! fuck work rate! if wwe starts writing real stories again, and let the talent be themselves then the show would be better than it is, and then maybe those little dick smart marks might shut up, and set balance to the force didn't wanna be one of these guys who writes an essay, but I was feeling it

Nice video, a problem WCW had in its end was that "everything was a shoot", trying to blur that line. TNA was doing that too in 2010, so much so that Hogan in a (dumb and horrible) promo said nothing is kayfabe anymore and that he doesn't care about how many fake titles you won. GFW had a promo over how "this is real, and it ain't a shoot". When people use shoot and kayfabe for promo's, just know they're being lame and pretentious.

The reason why I originally thought that the Eva Marie suspension might have been a work it because quite simply, ITS WWE!!! This is a company that ran a storyline where a man simulated having sex a dead person. This is a company where the owner wanted to do an incest angle with his own daughter. This is a company that had numerous Homosexual characters that were deliberately depicted to be perverted, creepy & downright ridiculous. This is a company that once made a female wrestler stripped down to the underwear in the ring, get down on her hands & knees & bark like a dog. This is a company that once continued with a show after they announced that one of the wrestlers had died in the ring. This is a company that has repeatedly exploited the deaths of past wrestlers & members of the wrestling community. So the idea of WWE using the Wellness Policy for a storyline wouldn't surprise me in the slightest. The levels they've stooped to before, nothing WWE does surprises me anymore

I doubt there would be so many smug know-it-alls if they had to take hundreds of bumps and spend hundreds of hours in a cramped van. The other point is the cynicism. I had to recognize the high concentration of troll blood in my veins and am trying to recover from being such a Hater. I've never been too concerned. Ever since I was 6, maybe because of the part of the world I live in, I knew it was fake, pretty much everybody else knew this too. In 1991, I read a Bret Hart interview in Disney Magazine where he talked about the worked elements of wrestling, and which parts were very real, the pain, injury and politics. Learning this at a young age made me way less cynical - seeing wrestling for what it is, enjoying it for what it is. So I have hope the newer generation of fans, won't be quite as cynical about it, since the way wrestling works is far more common knowledge.

  • @jvdhmj

But thats why most of the fans are so cynical, because they know too much. Back in the day people thought they actually won a legitimate fight. Nowadays everyone knows it's scripted and can see through questionable booking decisions. For example a run Hogan got in the past wont work nowadays, see John Cena or Roman Reigns. Fans see through that and thats why they get vocal about people who in their eyes deserves it doesnt get the recognition from the company. Personally i dont mind that all the secrets are out there. I mean as soon as the show starts i am just as caught up in it like i am with my fav animes or watching Star Wars. Although i must say that i'm guilty as well for being annoyed sometimes if wrestlers who "deserve it" in my eyes dont get much appreciation. Luckily WWE is on a great roll though with Owens, Styles, Sasha, Balor, Nakamura etc etc.

A lot of people knew all about Hogan, actually WWE did a lot to cover up the times the fans turned on him, it actually worked back then since most wrestling was taped. I do think, starting out on wrestling knowing how it works does help, because then you aren't overthinking it so much - Guys like Zane grew up thinking it was real, so there is second-guessing and adjustments to how they view wrestling.

I would think it's because a lot of wrestling fans were around at the AE and the writing back then didn't make us scatch our head "as much" So when a great moment such as CM Punk's pipebomb, or the fiery exchange between D Bry and Miz or the whole promo package between Punk and HHH happens, it's a trigger mechanism. Everybody wants to be "smart" when it comes to wrestling. Kayfabe is dying, and the fans are apart of that. You're supposed to suspend disbelief just like when you watch your favorite movie or TV. We're supposed to be caught in the moment.

i find the "blurred lines" idea as a tool that defines wrestling now. when u think of 80s-early 90s u think cartoonish. when u think late 90s u think absurd and edgy. when you think 2014+ u think maybe real in places? as a fan im always fascinating by blurred lines and figuring out whats a shoot and whats a work. if they do that right it could be a good thing (i.e The Miz, CM Punk). we even see brock lesnars UFC career becoming cannon with WWE in a way. i think this is just the way WWE evolved and is using all the information as an advantage. but ur right, they need to cut the obviously fake stuff of the past. the tricky part is, convincing us that works are real if that makes any sense

Yeah, I ran into these same rumors, pretty insane if you ask me, like they've gone so far in doubting the program that they forgot that it's still a real business. Like when Bryan retired, many said it was a work, which was stupid because it was on mainstream media. Which is the real determining factor that a lot of people don't appreciate. WWE stars go on late night talk shows and break kayfabe, because that's the image they project now. If WWE ran a story and outside media outlets, like TMZ, called to see if it's real, then WWE reps would tell them if it was a work (off the record obviously). Otherwise it would hurt their reputation. WWE doesn't want to be known as a company that creates fake news stories (anymore) since it's a publicly traded company, such news could even be grounds for liable as misrepresentation of the product.

Before the rise of social media, when someone was injured, we were never told. They'd always tell us when they had fake injuries when they had to have an overdue surgery, like Austin getting hit by the car to get him off TV. Real ones? Nope. For example, Wrath goes over the top rope awkwardly and just disappeared for about a year until showing up again. No mention on TV. He just... stopped showing up. If someone got fired, they just disappeared. Even if they had a title belt. Meng was released while he had the WCW Hardcore title. They said nothing about it on TV. These days, they always tell us. Both the real injuries and the pretend ones are given lip-service online, with no clear distinction. Is he having knee surgery, filming a movie, or did he have a legit injury during that match and they, on the fly, have the opponent use a foreign object on them to write them out? We have no idea.
